I thought I had a problem with too much fiber. Then I thought it was gluten sensitivity. However, since I quit coffee 2? 3? weeks ago, all my symptoms have gone away! Raisins, for some reason, are now the only things that make me gassy, bloated, uncomfortable, etc. I eat cooked-from-scratch whole foods so I'm getting puh-lenty of fiber, with not a bit of problem. It's made such a difference!

Some people think the “plant-based whole foods diet” is extreme. Half a million a year will have their chests opened up and a vein taken from their leg and sewn onto their coronary artery. Some people would call that extreme.

I've had this problem in the past. I would get IBS symptoms. I then try to add something to...slow the flow, so to speak.

OPUS56, I added it to my nutrition tracker to see how I was doing at getting enough. I *thought* I was eating around 20-25 grams, based on my handwritten notes. Per SparkPeople, I am typically between 35-40. Now, I'm watching to reduce fiber which seems very odd, though yes, you can have too much of a good thing!

I never considered too much fiber; all the warnings are about not getting enough. I've never counted my grams, maybe I should.

Probably the #1 issue I have with too much fiber is it binds with important nutrients, including iron and calcium, which are then "flushed" from the body with the fiber. You have to find the right balance. Can't rely on fiber alone as a weight aid, because it may lead to anemia, brittle bones, or other issues.

Thanks, Pat. That's similar to what it says on the "report."

"You CAN overdo a good thing when it comes to fiber. Eating more than 50-60 grams of fiber a day may…"

So if eating over 50-60 is a problem, I wonder why they set up the report to warn it is too high at 36?

Here's something I found on SP about too much fiber. Right now, I can't think exactly what the 'warning' message says when you are over or under a target range but they do let you know :-)

I'm curious, what does it say could happen if you eat too much?? I am typically on the high end, but generally not over. If I go through a phase where I'm not eating too much junk and then eat healthier again, I get fairly gassy and my stomach uncomfortable as I adjust to eating more fiber again.

Julie - that's been a concern of mine, as well, from time to time. I just listen to my body.

I do have to chuckle a little to myself when I get "preachy" messages from SP after I run my daily report. I do have to do better with protein tracking, however.

Have a great day, Pat

oh gee no onje would eat more fibre than me i can tell you, and i have no problems with it at all, i am a cardiac nurse and the doctors here say i am the healthiest person on the earth, so unless it is giving you problems i wouldnt worry about it at all, it is so good for you and will prevent many diseases. Have you ever read up on Dr Barnard or Dr McDougall? they are experts in diet and nutriton and are both doctors and i follow thier guidlines which is so full of fibre and and good health for prevention. My diet each day looks like this, porridge and brown rice mixed together for breaky with fruit and soy milk, fruit for snacks then lunch will be lots of veggies or salad with lentils and beans tea will also be some beans , lentils, quinoa, vegetables and then more fruit and maybe some porridge for supper , so that is heaps of good fibre, cheers

Fiber is important, so I added it to the extras that my SP nutrition tracker counts for me. Pretty much every day, SP warns me that I'm eating too much fiber. Usually, I'm between 36-45 grams. It isn't too much, really! The tracker even says, "if you eat more than 50, this & that can happen."

(sigh)
