I have found that Trader Joe's has the best supply of supplements. They are at least more likely than anywhere else I shop to have vegetarian/vegan options. Of course, many people don't have one near them!

Going to a local health food store to purchase my Vegan vitamins/Vitamin D2. Hopefully they have some calcium supplements there as well. It'll be fun to see what other items they carry that I could possibly use.

People don't actually like my response about why I'm vegetarian, either. emoticon

When I'm a little annoyed, I give the the shorter, ruder version: "Meat makes me vomit."

When I'm feeling polite or with someone that I don't want to risk offending, I'll say it a little more gently, "Meat gives me a horrendous stomach ache."

It always did... just took until I was in my teens to finally isolate the cause of my repeated stomach ache & vomiting episodes.

Went to doc this past Wednesday to let her know I'm 'going Vegan'. She congratulated me and was overall encouraging. I was relieved; wasn't sure how that would be received.

Interesting how people perceive the word "Vegan". The majority of people I've told just politely look and me and say "really?" Others just ask "why?" I feel like when I start to explain with "I feel it's a much healthier way to eat and the more I learn about the meat industry the more disgusted I become" I can see them immediately tune me out.

Then don't ask.

It is interesting THATONEJEN, to know who the parent companies are and how they conduct business. I'm becoming more in tune with who makes what. It saddens me when ethical small companies are bought out by the big manufacturers who don't care about anything but the bottom line. (a good example is Ben & Jerry's, which is now owned by Unilever)

I've learned a lot about sneaky ingredients over the last 18 mos, but some of the more surprising have been:

-some candies that would seem vegan from the ingredients are spun in beeswax to make them shiny, but it doesn't have to be listed on the label b/c it is considered to be a production additive and not an ingredient.

-the vitamin D in fortified cereals may be coming from an animal-derived source. I've read that all of General Mills cereals are suspect for this reason. Anyone know more about this?

-the parent company that makes Silk soy milk is also one of the largest dairy companies in the country. So - a vegan product but certainly not a vegan company. I know everyone's comfort line is different, but this was interesting to me, at least.

Also - Oreos are vegan. How is this possible? haha

Caesar dressing and worstershire sauce are made with anchovies. Especially a big deal for me because I'm allergic to fish!

Broccoli cheddar soup at Panera is not vegetarian.

Love this topic!!

If you're vegetarian and not vegan, you need to read the ingredients in your cheese. Rennet is a common ingredient used to harden cheeses and it is made from animal gut.

Thanks for the link - PETA is, of course, a great and helpful source. Dawned on me that I shouldn't be taking Omega 3 Fish oil capsules either! Old habits just fall into place and I don't even think about them. Planning on buying Deva Vegan Vitamins/Supplements - it's hard to find Vitamin D2 in 'generic' stores such as CVS or Walmart. The education continues!

I LOVE this topic!! Excellent post! :D

I have a small stock pile (I'm a couponer) of personal hygiene products and have to work my way through those before buying new ones however when I do, I'll be buying the cruelty free, vegan products :)

Here's a link that you can use to do a quick search for the items you have on hand and to research if you decide to replace your products for cruelty free and Vegan companies. :)

http://features.peta2.com/shopcrueltyfree/index.aspx

The list has a V on the right of the name if it's a Vegan company.

I look for the cute little bunny on the label. That way I know it is animal friendly. The "V" is even better.

I actually found a shampoo and conditioner that is vegan! Yeah! It is "Nature's Gate" and they have a vegan toothpaste too. And I can buy them in my local grocery store so they aren't very expensive. Cheaper than L'Oreal or Pantene that aren't animal friendly.

yes - actually, some vitamin D sources are from lanolin, which is the fatty/oily substance dervied from sheep's wool. Vitamin D2 is vegan. " Vitamin D2, also called ergocalciferol, is manufactured through the ultraviolet irradiation of a substance called ergosterol that comes from yeast". (Vegetarian Resource Group) Health and beauty aids use a lot of animal ingredients, including lanolin (see above) used in many lotions, gelatins, collagen ("derived" from animal products/gelatin) and glycerin. Unless otherwise stated, the glycerin is usually not vegan.

My lesson learned: I had been taking vitamin D prescribed by my doctor for a deficiency. I was horrified to discover that this was made from the skin of cattle. Rose

You're so right!

I was at the grocer's yesterday, and found that all the packaged pie crusts
had lard in the list of ingredients!!!

I hope I'm not duplicating a topic thread; I didn't see something like this and I think it would be helpful to vegan newbies such as myself.

I'm learning more and more how important it is to really scrutinize labels when I go shopping. I grabbed a bag of almonds off the shelf at the store 2 days ago and when I got them home realized they had some sort of butter coating on them. I was in a hurry...yadda, yadda, yadda.

It's important, also, to realize that ingredients such as casein, lactose, and whey are all milk derivatives and may be in in the item you're purchasing.

And then there's the pie crust LARD thing I overlooked on the ingredients for Christmas dessert!

If anyone has any lessons learned - vegetarians too - please share them here. It would help us all to be more aware of what we are doing along this path of V'gan. Thanks, Pat
