makes me so angry! And I avoid these restaurants afterwards as when they are so casual with ingredients (my worst is calling something vegetarian when they use a meat based stock or add fish sauce) they will end up causing real problems for someone who is very allergic to particular ingredients (such as fish or nuts).

Ha, I have these kind of conversations all the time:
Me: May I have the mediterranean roll with avocado instead of the bocconcini and feta?
Sandwich jobsworth: Avocado costs 50c extra.
Me: Right, so less than the reduction in cheese.
Sandwich jobsworth: What?
Me: I want you to take out the most expensive ingredient in the sandwich, the wanky cheeses, and replace them with avocado. Laughing all the way to the greengrocer.
Sandwich jobsworth: Avocado costs 50c extra.
Me: *sigh*

I hate paying the same amount for a meal when I have the meat left off. My biggest pet peve is Subway. Their veggie sub is by far not the cheapest one on the menu, and if you add avacado, it cost more! Urgh!

There are a number of people out there who think vegetarians eat chicken. How this came about is totally beyond me! I do run into it on a disturbingly regular basis. :(

that's maddening when restaurants ignore specific requests. I hope you did call and report the incident - that's the only way they'll be more aware for the next persons request. Safe travels!

When I eat, before ordering, I ask the waiter thoroughly on the ingredients they put in the dish indicated in the menu.

Thanks Cypher7,

I agree that mom and pops places are more willing to go the extra mile.

I find some places really good, and I do my best to spend my eating money there. Often times it's the mom-and-pop shops that are willing to go the extra mile, rather than the big chains with people on staff whose job it is to figure out the menus.

What annoys me...well, okay there are a couple of things.
One is almost always have to ask. It gets tiring. Though, again I find it's the little restaurants, at least around here, that are becoming more forthcoming and putting on their menu thing like "soup made with veg stock" or "mexican rice has no animal products".

Another is the restaurants that proudly display their vegetarian options -- the spinach salad with some veggies and dressing or the vegetable stir-fry. I'm sorry those do not make a balanced meal. How hard is it to add to tofu or chickpeas to the list of add-ins for a salad where you can add chicken or shrimp for a fee? And I live in a place where people should be more aware.

Vent over.

I order vegetable fajjitas at Mexican restaurants, corn tortillas instead of flour ones. They are real good about no cheese or sour creme. The quacmole and pico de ga (sp? ) work well, too.
If it is Tex Mex, you may have to ask about the fat in the beans. If it is baja Mexican, you're in for a fresh treat.

It really bothers me that waitresses give me death glares when I say "no cheese." Is it my tone? In today's society it should not come as a surprise or shock. I was actually asked recently if this was an allergy. I said no, but truly, my medical history really isn't their business. They should treat all request like this as an allergy and avoid any cross-contamination.

I have learned to look at the food before leaving the restaurant (for take out)

People just don't understand that you don't want meat cause its not normal to them.

After changing everything about the way I eat, including going vegetarian, I struggled with eating out. Never sure what to order! So once a week my hubby and I started having our date night at a Mexican restaurant that makes the food fresh. I would order the same thing each time, veggie nacho. After months, someone finally mentioned that that cheese sauce they use has a chicken and beef base! Now I'm hyper-paranoid about "hidden meat products." Last week I discovered beef fat in Hostess chocolate cupcakes!? (Not that I was eating them!!!!) I'm learning to read labels much more carefully. Wish I had a solution for hidden meats in restaurants! emoticon

you have my sympathy and my appreciation of your need to vent!
I really enjoy eating out when I travel... however not everyone listens and not everyone understands... in most places the person you book with is not who prepares the food, so even if a request is made, the bigger the business the easier it is for it to get lost down the chain to the kitchen!
But you should complain, your service is meant to be their business and it could help stop it happening to anyone else!
May you have happier meal times today :-)

All of us can relate, I'm sure!!! I also have asked for a salad with no meat or cheese.. . "Oh there's no meat in it, only chicken." Duh. . . does chicken originally have a face on it? Then it's meat! Why can't people understand that some people really like vegetables and no meat is perfectly fine. Just venting a bit, too! :)

That is a disappointment!! My pet peeve is when I ask for a salad without meat (that usually comes with meat) and they still charge me the same amount!!! Seems like I should get a discount for excluding a main ingredient from the meal???

Awww :-(((

Most of us probably have a story like this. My most recent one was the salad with feta cheese in it, when I'd asked "Can you please make me a Greek salad without the feta?" "Yes." When I sent it back they just picked out the feta and it was on my table again in a minute, still dripping with white sh!te from the cheese. "I asked you to make me a Greek salad without the feta. Make one. If you can't do it, don't say yes." So I got up and left without paying for it.
But in fact these kind of incidents remind me in a roundabout way that a lot of places do get it right, and airlines in particular are better than they used to be (in my opinion).

I'm travelling on business this week. For dinner, I called a restaurant and placed an order for their "Power Salad". I asked for no chicken. Twice. I had the girl repeat the order back to me.

I check into my hotel room, unpack, shower and discover they put chicken in my salad. I had already changed/showered so I wasn't going out again. I tried my best to pick out the chicken but there were alot of shreds.

I think I'll complain tomorrow. Just needed to vent right now. emoticon
