You are so right, Lisabeth! I became a "junk food vegan" when I first started and didn't lose any weight. In time I learned that the old rules of dieting apply with almost ANY diet: portion control, counting calories, etc.

I'm trying at present to get back on the wagon, as I had fallen off of obeying the "diet rules". Yep, vegetarian and vegan is not a magic pill if we don't obey those "written in stone" diet rules. It's just a fact of life.

Watching calorie consumption and still not losing weight.
Also have joined the gym and have used it daily.
I keep reminding myself that this is a lifestyle transformation for a lifetime not a prison sentence.
It is a process.
Just for today I will remain focused and be good to myself.

I've been a vegetarian for a little over a year. One thing I learned was a vegetarian diet is not automatically a healthy one. Along with counting calories, I really have to watch my fat intake. If I depend too much on dairy products to get my protein, I usually go over on my grams of fat for the day. Once I started switching to low-fat foods, and tracking fat gram more than calories, the weight starting coming off more. I was also pleasantly surprised how many low-fat vegetarian recipes there is on this site. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for looking out for me. I have been counting my calories. I have been exercising but I haven't been consistent enough I think. I did a 5k walk/run last week end and one this weekend for charity and managed one during the week.on my own. I am not a runner but I am trying to become one. My only draw back is that I am a migraine sufferer and have had trouble going out in the cold. I have a gym membership I just have to stop being so stubborn and exercise inside. I really want to be able in March to do the local 10miler and it would be better if I could exercise outside.I am going to follow through and get my exercise this week no matter where I have to do it. Thank you again for your input. It is nice to know that someone is actually listening.

Hi Robin. That's great that you only had one non-vegetarian item this week. Pat yourself on the back and tell yourself "I did good!!!"

And remember, the benefits of a vegetable diet will not be seen in just one week, usually. It takes time. So try to not rush it...just tell yourself, "This is my new way of life", so that you'll not put a time limit on it.

And think about: lets say you eat this way for a year and then realize it's not working for you. Well, you now have a story you can tell everyone!!!! You'll be saying: "Oh yes, I was a vegetarain for a whole year once!" How many people can say that?! So if nothing else, it's a topic of converstion. Also, it would prove to you that you can decipline yourself with new things...and I think that's always a good thing.

But I believe after a year you'd be bragging about the benefits of eating a vegetable diet. It's worth the risk to commit to at least one year of it and see what happens. So give it a shot! We are here to help you if you need it!

I am at a standstill myself. I am on the diet created by Dr. Joel Furhman. He was on Dr. Oz.Dr. Oz endorses Dr. Furhman in his book. I lost 21 lbs. in about 5 weeks and now nothing. The thing I try to tell myself when I look at the scale and get discouraged by 0 weight loss is: What would the scale look like if I had not of tried so hard? Would I have gained weight doing things the old way? I feel so much better than I did before and I don't want to go back to that way again. Before I knew going vegan would hold such a reward I would have done anything to find the answer as to why I was so tired and exhausted. I am very new at this and understand your frustration. Decide you can do it and you deserve it. If you don't quit....it will turn around.Good luck...and have a great day!

I only ate meat (organic chicken breast) once this entire week! While it would have been nice to see the scale move, I guess I should be happy with my progress.

Happy Sunday! emoticon
