When I was tracking food I regularly ended up with 70 to 80g of fibre. I think the so called warning about too much fibre is absolute pish. If the fibre is coming from whole foods it's fine; as someone else noted if it was coming from dense fibre supplements that's an issue. Western countries have an epidemic of diseases linked to low fibre diets, e.g. colon cancer.

About a year ago my doctor said, "I've never said this to anyone before, but maybe you're getting too much fiber." It really isn't a problem that happens to many Americans! Unfortunately, I was suffering bouts of what I can only (indelicately) refer to as toxic poop. And although it galled me, I did cut back on the fiber and I did get better.

But since switching to unprocessed plant foods, I don't think I CAN take in too much fiber. The main culprit before, I think, was my beloved Ezekiel 4:9 sprouted whole grain cereal. I love it, but it doesn't love me! I was only eating a half cup, and that only contains 6g of fiber, but I just couldn't handle it. I've added back pretty much everything else now, & I'm still ok. If I try Ezekiel again, tho, oops! symptoms again. All of which just goes to say, try it out for yourself. Your body will tell you what it can handle.

Some people think the “plant-based whole foods diet” is extreme. Half a million a year will have their chests opened up and a vein taken from their leg and sewn onto their coronary artery. Some people would call that extreme.

I set my fiber intake at 35-45 on the tracker and I haven't received the warning. It tells me I'm below the goal if I don't hit the 35 ;)

Go into the Spark nutrition site and change the fiber recommendations to a higher number and you won't get the warning any more! Problem solved.

Awesome - thanks for the posts. I suspected that the fiber issue was ok, but it's always good to get feedback from others.

p.s. Yes, the "Too Much" warning comes from the nutritional report you can run at the end of the day.

Thank you SparkPeople!

the only time you should worry if your getting to much fiber(or any thing for that matter) is if your not feeling well

The warnings come when you run the nutrition report at the end of the day. It puts Fiber in the "Went Over My Goals" category and tells you about some of the risks of eating too much fiber. I get these, too, and ---ignore--- them.

meat has zero fiber. all animal products have zero fiber. what kind of warnings do you get about too much fiber except that you are not spending enough money on animal products or lowering your risk of colon cancer to below the average western diet norm. if your fiber is from natural sources 50 to 100 grams is normal and healthy.

If you are getting all that fiber from whole plant foods, you don't need to be concerned. The recommended range is not realistic for someone on that kind of diet. If most of your fiber is coming from supplements and fiber additives like inulin, though, you might want to cut back on those sources.

Since I've tried to eat more vegetarian meals, my fiber intake has gone up to around 35-60 grams per day. I'm always getting warning messages about too much fiber. Beans just have more fiber than meat!

Should I be worried about too much fiber?

Thank you SparkPeople!
