I've just gone through this learning curve. Slowly more and more of my meat is going away and replacing it more and more this other things. In my freezer all that is left is fish - which I feel much more happy about - no more chicken, pork or beef.

The bouillon in my refrigerator is now veggie (better than bouillon - love this stuff), and I've had to activity go out and get a lot of tofu. Honestly I dislike a lot of the pre processes vegan products (amy's, boca etc) not because they are bad, but because it gets further from my one step from the sun goal. I'm still aiming for 90% being one step and 10% being two step...I probably won't be giving up whey powder because the rice protein just doesn't work as well for keeping me away from all the foods I use to have to want.

I had some workmen look in my refrigerator the other day as they were getting out some cold water and they remarked that they'd never seen a refrigerator filled with so many vegetables. They started to ask me tons of questions about what I eat - so fun talking about the joys of vegetables.

I will go outside the box and say to just slowly use it up, since you're becoming vegetarian for animal cruelty reasons. No less animal suffering will occur at this point by not eating it. If handling it or eating it bothers you a little, try slicing it thin while it's still mostly frozen, and using it in a stirfry or fried rice. You could put the ground turkey in a casserole.

Another option would be to use it for a potluck dish if you ever have to bring something to an office function or whatever.

I gave my seafood to a coworker and gave the rest to my in-laws.

I agree with the other people here. I especially like the freecycle idea! I would've never thought of that! :)

When I went vegan, I had frozen meat and fish in my freezer and I listed it on freecycle. They are in many neighborhoods. I had 20 people email me within 10 minutes asking if they could have the food. (on freecycle, no one knows who you are or where you live until you agree to make the transaction, then you email them directions to where you live and they show up and pick up what you have to give away. It is all over the nation. I use them to give stuff away all of the time. I get stuff occasionally too.) Calling a local church is a great idea too. freecycle.org

thanks so much I'll look into it, we are spending time at my vacation home while i took a 10 week leave from work to refocus on my health and fitness and to restore some balance in my hectic life....I'm Buddhist and do not go to a community gathering place to practice, while i'm here, I just do my usual meditation and chanting at home. But this will give me a great chance to get my local community here much better emoticon

You could call churches in your area. They usually have at least 1 family in their congregation who would be happy with a donation of meat. Just explain that you have gone vegetarian and don't want to throw the meat away. Then they will know that the gesture is genuine. Also a Catholic Church that has a school would appreciate the donation for their school lunches. A little meat can go a long way in a soup or casserole.

I'm impressed! I know a few other vegetarians but I can barely imagine a situation when "everyone around me is veggie or vegan". Do you have a family member or neighbor who might appreciate your frozen gift? How about donating to an animal shelter? A homeless shelter or food kitchen might appreciate it and use the small amounts to add to a soup or casserole. I don't like to toss out food either. I've given away perishable veggies to neighbors before we went on vacations.

I was wondering if anyone else had this problem when they started being strictly vegetarian....I decided to make this change due to mostly animal cruelty. I had been slowly eating less meat but really one day just decided NO MORE for me....but now I have perfectly good meat still in my freezer...everyone around me is veggie or vegan so I don't have anyone to give it away to, and it's really not enough to donate to somewhere like a food kitchen. I don't want to eat it but I would feel worse tossing it in the trash knowing that animal suffered and didn't even get eaten just tossed in the trash, really died for no reason then. I feel like I'm caught in a catch 22...but I'm thinking I may have to add a tiny bit of it back in my diet to use it up. Does anyone else have a better answer...I have cats but I really can't feed them a bunch of turkey burgers, chicken breasts, and fish all the time LOL. in fact they've started liking my veggies dishes, which i'm happy to give them a taste of...

And in the end you'll see.YOU WONT STOP ME!
