I wasn't sure where this should be posted, this looked close. It's a story about the power of ignorant people in powerful places.
Congratulations on your weight loss! Looks like you've worked hard!

Thanks so much for the Daiya "cheese" resource. I'll definitely check it out the next time I'm in the store! Have never heard of Bee Free honey, nor did I realize that Vegans don't eat regular honey, although it makes sense as I guess it is bee vomit.
I really appreciate your assistance Vicki720 - THANK YOU!

Daiya "cheese"! It's soy free and the absolute best I've had. It melts, it tastes good, it comes in various flavors and forms (shredded and block). The vegan restaurants here (Chicago) are mostly using it as it really is superior to most of the other products. I'll check some of the other products I use to see if there is soy. I also really like Field Roast. Do you know about vegan honey? Called Bee Free Honee, made with apples, and it is also very tasty! I don't think people would notice it's not "real" honey if you don't draw their attention to that!

VICKI720 ~ Thanks SO much for all of the great resources! Actually, it isn't that I'm having trouble locating seitan products, just ones that don't have soy sauce in them. Finally, I have come across www.fieldroast.com which does not contain soy sauce & the products are yummy! I've also been trying out recipes from Dr. Neal Barnard's various books. Yesterday I made some chickpea patties & this morning it was black bean cakes from his Get Healthy Go Vegan cookbook. I'm beginning to feel like this shift in meal plans has a greater chance for success.
The almond milk yogurt is more the consistency of blanc mange (something my grandmother taught me how to make from Irish Moss seaweed) than Greek Yogurt, so that is taking some getting used to. And, I haven't been able to find a good cheese replacement that isn't soy-based. The pepper jack rice cheese slices I got aren't very tasty on crackers, but seem o.k. in an omlette. Step-by-step...
I'm very grateful for the support!

I really like seitan a lot, and use it more than tofu. I have had no problem finding it where I live, but obviously don't know where you are or what is available to you. I would think the health food store you mentioned could order it if they don't have it already. Also, you can get protein from so many sources so if that's one of the issues with soy, then don't forget the legumes, dark leafy greens, among other options. I highly recommend the Engine 2 Diet, which is plant-based, and Dr. Jeff Novick has ridiculously easy and delicious vegan recipes without tofu. Physician's Committee for Responsible Medicine also has wonderful and easy plant-based recipes. All of those can be found online; if you are on Facebook, Novick's recipes are on his page. Good luck! I have been very happy as a vegan and it gets very easy over time as you adjust to the changes in cooking.

Sadly, this isn't a doctor that I trust. So the fact that he didn't say anything, even if there is a HUGE problem w/ soy wouldn't surprise me.
Anyhoo, I'd prefer to follow the medication label & just skip the soy. As a result, I'd be very grateful to hear from anyone who would care to suggest tofu/soy substitutions.
MANY thanks!!!

I bet your Dr. didn't mention it because he may not believe that this is an issue. I have read a lot on the subject, and there is a big debate about it. Many folks are anti-soy but my Dr. and other Drs. say to go ahead and eat it later in the day.

Non-soy Tamari!!! Thank you so much for suggesting this! My endocrinologist hasn't said anything about soy & my medication at all, I simply read it on the medicine label (it says not to eat soy or walnuts, so I've switched to almond milk & almonds/other nuts). Since I don't have a thyroid at all, I don't really want to play around w/ this stuff. Like you, I take the medication in the a.m. - then eat breakfast an hour later.
I hope I do not have to make my own seitan - egad! Am heading over to our local health food store (New Frontiers) tomorrow to see what I can find sans soy. Thanks for mentioning the soy isolates - I was not aware to look out for these, but will make a note on my grocery list.
Looks like the hot dog recipe also is dependent on tofu, which is my current frustration w/ the vegan recipes that I've been looking at. Am sure that eventually, I'll find a balance w/ the help of folks like you! Thanks so much for your response!!!

Carpediem369, Did your Dr. tell you to avoid all soy? Mine said to just not have any within 4 hours of taking the medicine, I also cannot have iron supplements, Calcium supplements or high fiber foods within those 4 hours because they prevent the absorption of the medicine.
I do have tofu occasionally but do not drink soy milk. I use soy sauce in cooking dinner because I take my meds in the morning.
If you make your own seitan, you can add anything you want for flavoring. But be careful, soy isolates are in so many things like crackers, cereals etc. these are very unhealthy for you even if you could eat them.
Here is a recipe for vegan hot dogs and vegan chicken nuggets. The hot dog recipe contains soy sauce, but you can substitute a non soy tamari.

Many thanks for the link! I now see that it is about Raw Food. I'm trying to make a switch to a more Vegan diet, but cannot have soy due to it interacting w/ my thyroid medication - am trying to figure out what to do about replacing tofu in recipes & think I may have to continue eating eggs. Am also wondering about locating seitan products which have not been marinated in soy sauce - suggestions?

I am so happy that this raw diet is working for you but I don't think it will be my choice to follow it. I am eating over 1/2 of my calories raw and think that is the perfect amount for me.

No i don't. Beans are too difficult for humans to digest. Including soy. Why would you want to eat something you have to cook anyway. Thats a pointer it isn't right for our bodies.

Raworganic. Do you have a way to eat beans? I know you can eat green beans, fresh soy beans etc. But what about dried beans? How would you prepare them.
BTW, I do not eat any prepackaged processed foods.

Thanks for the video. I am quite ill and have not had much reversal of my autoimmune illnesses yet. YET being the operative word. I am eating more and more raw everyday, but find that in the winter I am so COLD. How do you do without warming your foods in the COLD. (I live in Cleveland, Ohio and have a condition called cryoglobulinemia, It is a condition where your blood actually gels when the body temperature goes below 37 degrees.) So, I crave warm foods all of the time.
How did you get used to not having soup?
We are actually thinking of moving to Charlotte, NC. But my husband can't find a job down there. (Any Charlotte business owners want to give my wonderful husband a job? LOL)

Hi I am new to the group (again) and I have been vegetarian for almost 6 years and over 90% vegan for almost 2 years. I have found that SO DELIOUS COCONUT Creamers to be the best for me. They are made with GMO organic coconuts and the flavor is really good. I get them at the New Frontiers, Whole Foods, and a couple of local health food markets where I live in CA. It is nice have a place to come to read what others are discovering about living a healthy plant based diet and it makes it so much easier to explain to others about how healthy it is when there is information to help deliever the information. Thank you.

Soy is a GMO product. Also it is know to cause issues with hormones. Definitely on my DO NOT USE list. Also I no longer drink coffee so don't need it. LOL
Getting back on the original topic of this thread: It's about time that we take charge of our health and do what is in our power to do. Being sick and dying of chronic illness is a choice. I choose health. I choose eating a low fat raw organic vegan diet, drinking green smoothies, and juice feasting.
Given the right food and help, the body REVERSES the IRREVERSIBLE. Including diseases that are termed: genetically predisposed.
It's time to step up to the plate (filled with organic vegies) and eat plenty of the bounty of nature which is the way we were meant to eat.

I use Silk's French Vanilla. Took a while to get over the fact that it wasn't as creamy and thick, but eventually I got over it. I like it now.

If you do indeed want to get this video, please go to the link I put in the original post and order it ASAP. They have only a very small supply that they discovered left over from the first release. It's an incredible one to have in your library. Very inspirational.

That DVD looks like a great movie. I saw the Youtube video that is about an hour long called "Foods That Kill." It shows exactly (medically) what happens to our veins, arteries and heart after eating an animal-fat-laden meal. Fascinating to watch, very informative and was a transitional moment for me. Thanks for the tip on "Reversing the Irreversible." I'll be sure to watch it. Here is a link to the Youtube video. It shows actual blood and veins being OILY.
I just watched this wonderful video. It is a collection of 37 testimonials by the people themselves who were cured of their "incurable" diseases through a raw foods program. Green Smoothies were a major part of their healing process.

I'll be looking for that creamer, too, MrsJocco...sounds good! So far coffee creamers have been one of those vegan products that's been hard for me to find (or too expensive), so I'm hoping this will be what I've been looking for.

That's great! I've seen & felt the effects of going vegan (although not raw) myself! I no longer need pre-diabetes or cholesterol medicines and lost all my excess weight.
(If you're interested in trying a vegan creamer, this one is SO tasty: www.pulmuonewildwood.com/creamer.asp It may be raw, but you may have to contact the company to find out.)
Edited to add: I'm pretty sure Trader Joe's soy creamer is the same product!
Also forgot to add: going vegan cleared my acne, too!

Thanks for the clarification, Karen.
I can totally relate about the espresso. I did find a 1/2 way replacement for the 1/2 & 1/2, Silk Pumpkin Spice Soymilk. It is probably a seasonal thing with my luck. LOL It isn't as creamy so I still add a little 1/2 & 1/2 (I get one that is from a local humane dairy).

Raw is not eating anything that is heated over 108 degrees. So, I can have anything that is actually raw and anything that is dehydrated, by me of course. I am getting an Excalibur dehydrator by March 2012. That's the next thing on my raw vegan kitchen list.
Now the difference between vegetarian and vegan: Vegans consume no animal meat nor any animal bi-products. I am a 99.8888% vegan. I don't want to give up my espresso which is down from 5 cups to 2 cups per day, sometimes 3 cups. I have organic 1/2 & 1/2 from humanely treated and free range cows. I also have a dairy based dressing I use. That's it.
So as my SparkName depicts: I am a 99.888% raw organic vegan. And, its a snap since I started drinking green smoothies. That was the missing piece of the puzzle for me. I no longer am hungry. I naturally went raw and went vegan. I naturally am losing weight. I no longer have cravings. This coming from a member of Overeaters Anonymous and a member of the SparkTeam Emotional Eaters. Past member of course. LOL
