WOW WILL, that was a plethora of information! Thanks for that info-I will have to look at that again before eating out. I especially liked the eat this not that part! If you check out the Mexican cuisine they say jicama and salsa instead of chips and salsa-I never would have thought to do that!! We eat Jicama almost every day-in fact, tonight I am going to attempt to make jicama tots(tater tots). Thanks again, Will!! Leen

Here is a Spark item I found with dining tips broken down by types of cuisine. It's not specifically meatless, however the general tips can be helpful. If you click on a category, such as Thai for instance, it gives general informaiton and information on hidden dangers and the more healthy options. Here is the link:

Leenie,
Check out this website, it has a lot of restaurant info on it, including Olive Garden. I was on there the other day and it had a ton of items for Bob Evans, for example.

Yeah Leen,

Even with the mayo and the cheese, a veggie burger that is more than 900 calories is crazy.

On a side note, I saw an article today about Applebee's and some other chains:

Will: My DH and I did order without cheese and mayo, but I didn't think to have them put mustard, we ate it sorta dry. But still, I can't believe that a veggie burger would be almost 1000 calories, seriously, it's veggies. It was good, though! I was certainly glad we split it!!emoticon Leen

Regarding the veggie burger at Ruby Tuesday, if you want to considerably reduce the calories, then do what I do: order it without cheese and without the garlic mayonaise. I get mustard instead.

I estimate that ordering it without those things will cut out about 300 calories. Then if you don't eat all of the bread, the you're doing even better.

Jason's Deli is actually growing pretty quickly. They have restaurants in lots of states. You can go to their website- www.jasonsdeli.com- and see if they have a location near you.

Some of these restaurants must be local or regional, because I haven't heard of Jason's Deli or the Sweet Tomato.

Jason's Deli is another good restaurant choice. They put a little 'v' next to anything on their menu that is vegetarian. It's great to be able to just go through the menu and look for the little 'v's. And their food is really good too!

Sweet Tomatoes is great. They tell you right on the sign if something is vegetarian or not. I used to always get cream of mushroom soup and I looked at the sign tonight and saw that it said non-vegetarian. I'm guessing there is some kind of chicken or beef broth in it. I never would have known if they hadn't put the sign there. But there was an excellent Curry Split-Pea soup right next to my mushroom soup. It was sooooo good!

I do the same thing with refried beans. I called one restaurant to find out and even emailed them. All I got was a "huh?" and a "no comprende" on the phone and then no answer back on email. So I boycotted them.

Just a heads up on the refried beans. Some refried beans are made with lard. I usually ask when dining in a Mexican restaurant, or just don't eat them.

When I buy from the grocery store, I always get the vegetarian refried beans and I read the label to be sure.

Red Robin is one of my favorite places to eat. You can customize any of their menu items by adding, replacing or removing ingredients. They have a ton of burgers all of which can be made with a boca patty or garden burger (love these!). They also let you substitute the fries for steamed veggies, a garden salad or fruit.

We also have a chain of restaurants in Nashville called Salsarita's. They are in other parts of the country too. They have a vegetarian option for everything on their menu and will give you either grilled veggies (cooked with butter and/or oil), black beans, or refried beans in place of the meat. Excellent for vegetarians who want to eat healthy!

BUGGIE726: Red Robin lets you sub a Boca(vegan)pattie or a Gardenburger(has cheese in it) pattie for any of the burgers. They also have the coolest tool online that lets you figure out exactly how many cals, carbs, fat, proteins are in your customized meal! They tend to get high in cals and carbs(bun), but they also have a bunless burger that I haven't tried yet. Ruby Tuesdays veggie burger is good, but I went online after I ate it-900 and something calories!!! Luckily I only ate half, but still, YIKES!!!! Leen

The closest Ruby Tuesday to me is DFW or Houston. Grrr!

There aren't a lot of vegetarian options in San Antonio. I mean I do live in the heart of cattle country. There is however a new vegetarian restaurant that opened up last year that is really awesome. Called Green. It has vegetarian and vegan choices. Everything from breakfast tacos to wheat meat chkn fried steak. Soy ice cream, etc.

I like Ruby Tuesday's as well. And there is one just down the road. The salad bar is great, but I just need to make sure I don't get too many of the higher calorie items and dressings.

Ruby Tuesday is good. They have a nice veggie burger and you can substitute it for any of their regular burgers.

They also have steamed veggies, you can get a plain baked potato, and they have a really nice all-you-can eat salad bar with some nice options. Ruby Tuesday is one of my top choices for eating out.

I refuse to go to Appelbees. I tried to go to the one up the street from the apt and didn't see a dang thing in the menu I could eat. When I asked if have a mushroom angus beef burger sans meat I was told no because they didn't have that many mushrooms left. Ah, but I bet if I had asked for a mushroom angus burger with tons of extra mushrooms I would have gotten it.

Chilis is good. They have a bean burger that is good. Red Robin is supposed to let you use boca or gardenburger on any of their regular burgers. Haven't tried that one yet. Have one in town, but it's a good 30 miles away from where I live.

I also like Golden Corral. Went there yesterday for breakfast. They have all kinds of vegetarian dishes both for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Of course when we go there its really hard to stay on track. Did pretty well at breakfast tho. We don't go too often so its nice when we do. Have a great day everyone and eat fruits and veggies.

I've been to Panara Bread and had the tomato soup in a bowl and its very good. We also get veggie tacos at Taco Bell and baked potatoes at wendys. We can get pizza at pizza hut and breakfast anytime at Denny's. There are some choices out there, but its limited. Have a great saturday everyone.

I know how frustrating it is to go to a restaurant and look at the menu and think "what in the world am i going to eat". I have even had wait staff get this look like 'you have got to be kidding me' when i ask what they can substitute instead of meat, or is the price the same, or is that item really vegetarian. That's why i loved going to my neighbor hood friendly's, they used to carry veggie burgers.....but not anymore, ok, so they have veggie fajitas...but wait, the rice that comes with the veggie meal, is not vegetarian.....soooo frustrating.emoticon

Jessica, good tip. Also, you can either ask for a reduction in the cost of the entre, or ask for a side of some vegetables for removing meat from a dish. I've gotten a side salad, or a side of steamed broccoli or something like that. It's a naice trade-off.

It is surprising how many hidden meat ingredients there are in normal foods...Did you know that Twinkies have beef fat in them? gross....

It's been a while since I have been there, but last time I went I asked if they had a veggie burger and they did. They didn't offer it on the menu but they had some in the kitchen. They may not offer that option everywhere but it is here in Seattle. I just had to also let them know I needed to bacon either on the burger. Not a super healthy meal...but if you have a salad instead of fries with a light dressing it's not going to ruin your day.

It is so hard to eat out these days to many hidden ingredients...unless the restaurant is completely for vegetarians.
I always stick to a Baked Potato and salad with vinegar and oil.

And always remember~~~ If life offers you lemons~~~~ask for tequilla and salt and call me over !!

I try to be a sport when I'm with a group that wants to go someplace where there is little for me to eat. Applebees actually used to have some nice vegetarian items on their menu. I guess a few years ago they must have simplified their menu and eliminated these items.

Last time I went I had the veggie patch pizza. To me it was awfull. I do eat cheese once in a while but this thing was so greasy I felt ill after a few pices.

Like I said I try to be a sport but Applebees is one of the few restaurants I veto.

My daughter and I are vegetarians. We do not eat any meat of any kind. We read ingrediants on everything in the store before buying it. You would be surprised by what has meat in it. We find it very difficult to eat out because there is so much meat in things. We do not usually go to Applebees and the last time we did they had a veggie burger, but it was horrible. We get the chicken alfredo dish and ask for it without chicken. We get confused looks whereever we go. We can eat at fast foods, but its high in calories and boring. Friendlys is ok, but very limited. We go to Denny's and get breakfast. Most of the time, we don't go out because of the difficulty. We need more veg. restaurants.

We don't have an Applebee's in our town, but we went to an obnoxious new restaurant about six months ago. They did not have a single vegetarian dish on their menu!! I asked our server if I could get one of the pasta dishes without meat and he said no. We were with a group of people, so my husband didn't want to just walk out. I ended up having a plate of baby mixed greens with a cup of oil on the side. It wasn't even salad dressing. It looked like vegetable oil. Anyways, I told everyone I know to not go to this restaurant, and I just found out they went out of business!! Yay!

I worked at Applebee's for years until about 2 months ago...it is so hard to find something to eat there without meat! the Tomato Basil soup is vegetarian, the California shrimp salad ( hold the shrimp and bacon) is one of my favorites...that is pretty much it! If you get a nice server, or ask the manager, you do not have to pay full price if you skip the meat.

I am returning to a vegetarian lifestyle. My family is having a hard time with this. It makes me laugh to read your stories because I am going through the same thing. My husband routinely offers me "bites" of his Meat. Thinking that because I didn't order it, it is ok for me to "taste" his. I will have to remember the line of I don't eat anything that has or has had a mother.

This is funny, but sad.

Some of these stories are funny, because its happened to me so many times. When I say Im veg...people offer me fish.

Its sad because people are so clueless and usually not very helpful.

A veg friend and I went to Applebees once and we were so upset about the menu and lack of options for us. We had a really bad server as well. All around it was a bad experience....and to this day we call it Crapplebees.

I think we both got a side salad and shared some fries (which were probably cooked in the same oil as meat products)

We were in the middle of NO WHERE, so we didn't have other options.

I think that people should have to be approved to be able to call them selves vegetarian :)

I guess that would discourage people from trying it though...

As a server who is a vegetarian, I can tell you that most people who come into a restaurant and say they are vegetarian really aren't. This may be why servers are so rarely helpful to those of us who actually are vegetarian.

Many times people have told me that they are vegetarian and asks for suggestions. They they either a) order something that I have just told them has chicken broth in it b) order a chicken sandwich or something with fish in it c) order a strictly vegetarian meal and then sneak bites of other people's meat.

Those people are part of what makes it so hard for us to find vegetarian food...

I have had positive and negative experiencies at Applebees... One manager checked every can of soup in the kitchen (I think it was a tomato soup) to find an ingredients list. Finally, he brought one of the cans out and showed me that the supplier had stuck some sort of label over the ingredients on EVERY can, so he could not assure me that it was vegetarian (and he was going to speak to corporate about that issue). I had another where the server debated (with quite a bit of hostility) with me about whether fish was vegetarian! I ended that discussion with, "It had a face!" No she did not get a tip and I wrote a complaint card.

I am on a couple of Councils and end up at steak houses for dinner with Council members. One Council person asked the server for a BRAILLE menu. She blinked several times and asked, "Is that, like, for sugar-free?" I knew at that moment that I would not be asking her about ingredients - especially when she returned to the table with 2 braille menus, stating that she was told one was in Spanish... (they were both in English).

Will, good idea about asking the server. Most places, that will be helpful.

Still, while there are many knowledgeable servers out there, on occasion I have found that a server is not aware of what a vegetarian can/can't eat. Lots of people think that chicken and fish are vegetarian, for example.

In my worst experience, upon asking a server what vegetarian options a particular restaurant had, the answer was "Hot dogs?"

You are to be commended for your perseverance at lunch. It does take extra effort, and sometimes I wish I could just go anywhere and eat anything. However, you all understand why we just can't do that anymore. After a while we get better at negotiating these sticky situations. And I think the more we get through, the easier it is and the more confidence we develop.

It was a successful lunch!!!! I took everyone's advice and had a baked potato and broccoli. I made sure they understood no butter or sour cream. When my meal came out I topped the potato with the broccoli and all in all it was okay. I feel this is a major milestone as I would have found something vegetarian but loaded with fat and calories - no guilt today. Again, a big thanks to all.

As someone who used to work in a restaurant, I know it can be hard to please some customers. But I also know that there are many wait staff that are in it for more than just trying to get a nice tip. There are still some people who want to make sure you’re happy and satisfied. So, don’t be afraid to talk to your server. Of course some of them will give you just the bare minimum of effort, just enough to keep you smiling. But believe me, there are some restaurant workers who will go out of their way to make you feel like you’re the only customer in the place. So, let them know what you want.

Sometimes, I get frustrated and I’ll eat things that are just barely tolerable because it can be hard work trying to get a decent meal - especially if the server acts like they have a chip on their shoulder. But a lot of times, it turned out to be worth it to let them know what I wanted. Any why shouldn’t we demand more since we’re paying for the meal?

Wow, thanks for all the great suggestions. I am hoping for a baked potato and maybe a vegetarian soup or veggie on the side. It should not be this difficult to eat in a place when there are so many meatless options out there. Again, thanks so very much.

I went to Appleby's a few months ago because my mother had a gift card she was bent on using. I ordered a plain baked potato and then asked for a spinach salad with onions, mushrooms, and, I think strawberries, because I think a spinach salad with strawberries was on the menu. They had no marjarine, only butter, so I passed on that. I had oil and vinegar on the salad. It worked out OK. What I did essentially was to tell the waitperson exactly what to put on my plate, regardless if there was anything like it on the actual menu.

It does take quite a bit of effort at Appleby's! Sometimes I feel very "high maintenance" compared to the people I'm with. I still feel self-conscious every time.

KUO, I really hate to be the one to have to tell this (b/c the veggie patch pizza really is delicious) but I have a friend who works at Applebees and she told me that the tortilla that thing comes on is made mostly of LARD, EWWW! So are all their cream sauces.

You are right. Most of their stuff is deep fried, cooked in a heavy oil-based creamy sauce, high in sodium and bad fats, riddled with all kinds of meat products, and very unappealing.

I used to think we'd have a voice if we veggie lovers stood firm and stopped patronizing such places. But then I realized that we are the minority. These places only stay in business because people love to eat that mess.

Gladgad - Need to check ingredients in the Caesar Salad, very good chance it has anchovies in the dressing which would make it non-vegetarian.

I love Applebees. The veggie patch pizza is delicious...not healthy though. I will normally order a salad with no chicken. I really like the fiesta (or santa fe, i cant remember what its called) salad.

For lunch they also have a soup and salad combo that I get sometimes.

It seems like they are really heavy on chicken dishes.

I did order the chicken teriyaki bowl. I had them put the chicken on the side which I gave to my husband and also the sauce on the side.
It had rice and veggies in it and it wasn't bad. I ordered a house side with no bacon bits and dressing on the side.

Maybe the menu is different in different areas, but in South Florida I found a few vegetarian things: Baked potato, Cesaer Salad, House Salad, Grilled Teriyaki Bowl (hold the chicken), Crispy Orange Chicken Bowl (hold the chicken).

Good luck...

I usually go for a plain baked potato with light ranch dressing and whatever veggie they have hold the butter. Sometimes they get a little confused when you ask for no butter on anything but you get there in the end. Haha. Applebee's is one of the worst! I haven't been there in years. In fact I think someone told me that they dont even have baked potatoes anymore! Hopefully thats not true. Good luck.

Applebee's is one of the worse ones. Even their salads have animals in them. However, on the rare occasion I end up there, I order a salad, hold the animals and bring my own salad dressing. Unfortunately they are going to charge you the same for the salad even though they put no meat or salad dressing on it. I avoid Applebee's when I can, sometimes I just go to enjoy the companionship and only have water.

I have a lunch date at Applebee's this afternoon. I have just looked at their menu - do these people not recognize that there are vegetarians out there???? Applebee's is not a place I usually go to - does anyone have any advise for ordering something off the menu that is vegetarian and not a billion calories because of the cheese it has in it?? Thanks!!
