Hopeyogini - I agree. when I started taking fish oils consistently, I noticed a significant improvement in my mood. I don't get the 'brain fog' that I was prone to before, and, for me, I feel that my brain power has been boosted. I'm able to concentrate on things longer, and to think more abstractly.

of course, this is all anecdotal :)

It would be wonderful if we could get the vitamins and minerals we need from our food. But the sad fact is that growing grounds are very much depleted of nutrients, and we are unlikely to get everything we need from food only. A good quality supplement is insurance.

I was on the "no supplements for me" boat a few months ago, but then I started researching some symptoms I was having and decided that I needed to start taking some supplements. I currently take fish oils, calcium/magnesium, and a B complex supplement and I'm feeling much better!

I have to admit to being in the minority here. I take supplements daily...

*Rainbow Light Just Once Women's Multivitamin/Mineral right now, but I also like the GNC veg multi Will mentioned
*Calcium (multi doesn't have enough and my dad had osteoporosis)
* Vitamin E (again, multi didn't have enough, according to the RealAge quiz I took)
* Flax Oil (for Omega 3s)
* Chromium Piccolinate (diabetes runs on both sides of my family; I also eat lots of cinnamon)
* Grapeseed extract (because I drink too much caffeine and it keeps away the eyelid spasm thingy that happens when you do that)
* Vitamin C (a habit from my days in the classroom)

That's my story and I'm sticking to it! :)

i just started taking a daily multi vitamin. it says to take 2 of them, but usually i'll just take one. like someone mentioned, they are only there to supplement so i try to get all the vitamins i need from food. i hate to track my food, because i get obsessive with calories, so it's a way for me to be sure i'm getting what i need. i also have incredibly dry skin & it seems to help... although i'm not sure why.

I take a women's multivitamin every day. mostly for the calcium - I eat a lot of dairy every day, but there is a history of osteoporosis in my family.

I also take a fish oil supplement (I'm a pesca-tarian) every day, because there is a lot of dementia in my family, and I've read lots of research that proves that omegas (along with healthy diet and exercise) can help prevent the onset of dementia/alzheimers.

To answer a question below, no, you can't get too much B12. It's a water soluble vitamin, so your body doesn't store it up. It will use/absorb what it needs and excrete the rest. The vitamins you CAN get "too much" of are vitamins A, D, E and K, which are fat soluble and your body stores them. Minerals are another story--some are stored and can reach high levels, such as iron, which can be toxic.

The other thing I forgot to mention is that supplements are just what their name implies. They are designed to supplement or bridge the gap between the nutrients you are getting versus what you need to be getting. If you can get the proper nutrients from your diet, the supplements are not necessary. Your body will absorb what it needs, whether from food or supplements. All the excess gets tossed as waste when you go to the bathroom.

Some people, especially vegetarians, have a hard time getting specific vitamins. The most common problem areas are iron and calcium. There is really no need to take a multivitamin if there are only specific things you need. It is not only pointless since the excess vitamins will get secreted from the body, but its an expense you dont need to be making. Multivitamins can be expensive.

So, it is better to get it all from foods. But when that is not possible, spend time assessing what you really need and get just those particular supplements rather than take a supplement with nutrients you already getting from foods. I know, I need to follow my own advice. LOL

I take multivitamins if I have a day where I haven't eaten so healthily! Does anyone know if it is possible/problematic to get too much B12? My multivitamin has way more than RDA. I usually have 1 to 2 cups of silk soy milk per day which has 50% RDA per cup, and sometimes I'll have a luna cliff bar which has 100% RDA. Just wondered if getting too much B12 was bad.

I take iron supplements because without them, my iron levels are so low I need transfusions.

However, I recently started seeing a holistic doctor instead, who tested me for gluten intolerance. Since anemia is one symptom of gluten intolerance and celiac disease, we are hoping that a gluten-free diet will help my iron absorption abilities.

It's very tough. Giving up gluten is FAR tougher for me than giving up meat ever was. (Since I don't like meat, and I do like bread.) However, if it means I won't have to take 3 iron supplements a day, it will be worth it!

Gluten-free since 5/27/2008!

I do not take supplements either. Most research shows that vitamin/mineral supplements really don't do much for people's health, and plus I like to focus on getting good nutrition from food instead of relying on a "back up" supplement. However, everyone's needs are different, based on your diet and health history. I'd recommend looking more in-depth at some nutrients on your Nutrition Tracker to see if you're falling short in ways that dietary changes can't make up for.

I also do not take vitamins or supplements. I am an organic vegetable lover and my diet is rich in organic grains and beans. I also add walnuts and other nuts to my salads and cook tofu in a variety of ways. I only eat fruit occasionally - should eat it more.
