the only upcoming event is the meet up at the Arden Fair Mall at the Sign in Desk.
It is in front of the JC Penny entrance. on Second Saturday, February 9,2013.
I will be there at 9 and at 10 so people can sign up with the Mall and meet up with other Spark Sacramento people who wish to walk... I will be trying to so this a month at a time if I can do it ... hope it takes off on its own...

Walked for 50 minutes with my dogs along the river today before heading to the club. I met my neighbor later for appetizers and wine but felt really good about having worked off those fun calories first! FYI free hula classes being offered through MeetUp at the Chinese Christian Ministry starting in February. Ongoing free yoga classes at McKinley Park every Saturday.

I haven't seen much in the way of free activities in the area lately. Where do you (collective you) get your activity information? Should I be looking on craigslist? Is there a calendar somewhere on the internet with events listed?

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Don't forget about Gold Rush Days September 3 - 5, 2011 in Old Sacramento.

The annual festival "turns back the clock," transforming Sacramento's historic district into a scene straight out of the 1850s. Hundreds of costumed performers take on the roles of celebrities, personalities and just plain folks, bringing history to life while bluegrass pickers and old-timey Musicians perform on several stages, evoking the vivid tunes of the times.

Smashy1: I believe there are six community gardens in Sacramento. The Oak Park/Martin Luther King garden opened the first part of August. My honey and I share a large plot ($50 a year plus a one time cleaning deposit of $25) with two friends. We transplanted some existing stuff from our garden (Swiss Chard, onion, cherry tomato, etc) and planted other fall/winter stuff such as Brussel sprouts and cauliflower. We added some flowers for the grand opening to make it pretty.

This link will show you all the Sacramento community gardens: www.cityofsacramento.org/parksandrec

Andrea, thanks for letting us know about this event.
I wasn't even aware that the City of Sacramento was doing this community garden.
What a great idea. Glad you were able to get a plot. Is it all planted? or is it just a beginning with fall veggies?

would love to learn more, although it is a bit of distance for me to consider 'farming' there.

Stop by the grand opening for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Garden, Saturday, August 27th, from 9am to 11am. Come say hello to me. My plot is the one with the umbrella.

While you are there, sign up for a plot. I don't believe you are required to reside in Oak Park to have one.

UC Davis is presenting a free summer concert, featuring Wonder Bread, on August 11th from 6pm to 8pm. The concert will be on the lawn behind the Shriners Hospital at X and 45th Streets.

Additional information can be found at healthsystem.ucdavis.edu .

Anyone know anything about Wonder Bread (the band, not the bread - bread.) ? :)

NorCal All Sports Health and Fitness festival is this Sat/Sun in Auburn. Again, not technically free, but cheap ($3 admission for adults).

There is a good assortment of information and some demo classes: Kettlebell, Zumba and Beachbody Products. www.norcalallsports.com/index.html

I am planning to go Sunday, if anyone wants to ride along.

I didn't make it to the Pear Festival this past Sunday because I was so drained from our first trip to Lake Tahoe (beautiful).

Went to the Santana Tribute by Sacred Fire at Cesar Chavez Park last night. Had a wonderful time. Not too crowded and plenty of shade. We parked about six blocks away to avoid paying so I got some exercise in too. emoticon

Anyone have plans for free activities for this weekend?

It was actually a lot better than I had expected. Hadn't been in years, and I thought it would be just so HO HUM... but you know - with the weather being so nice and the crowds a little more mellow we really enjoyed it. (We did not do the midway, but it seems they have some pretty decent rides out there, if that is what you enjoy)... You can get a coupon book for $5 that has a lot of discounts for the midway, etc... (which we didn't buy either) but would be good if you were into rides and FOOD.... Ha hahahaha... We had tacos and they were excellent for $3..................I just put up a few pictures from the fair ....

How was the fair, SMASHY1? We go about every five years, in part due to the cost but mostly because we don't notice much change from year to year.

It certainly and BY NO MEANS FREE. . . . . but I am going to head out to the State Fair at Cal Expo today. The weather is superb, the body is willing. . . I don't think I will try any of the 'new' food options that are out there this year.

I might SPLURGE and try a corn dog . . It's not really the fair without a corn dog. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Oh, and it's a Senior's Day, reduced entry $$$$

This looks like a lot more fun than cleaning out the garage. Time Travel Weekends in Old Sacramento: www.historicoldsac.org/progra
ms/progra
ms-street-theatre.asp

The centerpiece to this free and highly interactive program includes a series of Old West stage shows -- including the much acclaimed Golden Melodeon Review -- performed by teams of talented actors and actresses in period attire. Weekend performances with rotating themes are scheduled on four stages located throughout Old Sacramento including in the Eagle Theatre, Passenger Station, Pioneer Park and Waterfront Park. Additionally, the talented performers will roam the streets of Old Sacramento throughout the scheduled weekends, putting on spontaneous and often-elaborate skits and performances so visitors can step back in time to the 1850s, 1860s and 1870s.

How about cleaning out your garage and/or spare room and posting things to get rid of on freecycle.org? I prefer to recycle things rather than throw them away and my area of town is not known for yard sales.

Any free fireworks or other Fourth of July celebrations this weekend?

There is a Qigong and Tai Chi class being offered on Thursday evenings from 6:05 to 6:50 at the Center for Spiritual Awareness in West Sacramento. They ask for a love offering but no one is turned away.

CSA is also holding a Healthy Lifestyle seminar on Thursday, July 14th. This one is free. The follow up held on Saturday is $25.

Yoga in the Park on Saturday's in the Spring & Summer at 9am in McKinley Park. Look up Yoga in the Park on Facebook. It is free at usually has over 150 people show up. Very cool experience
Also Fusion Yoga offers Karma Yoga for free at noon on Monday and Wednesday. Word has it, they may be adding more "Karma Yoga" classes in the future. Their website is www.fusionyogasac.com. Located on Fair Oaks Blvd near Howe. - there is a suggested donation of $7, but they don't require it by any means.
ALSO: July Fourth Fun Run. Held in River Park near CSUS. A great tradition and the race is free to enter! July 4, 2011. http://www.chipsrunning.com/358-2

What free activities do you have planned for this weekend? Will you be attending the Concert in the Park at Cesar Chavez Plaza? I understand Mumbo Gumbo is performing.

I saw a flier about a concert at McClatchy Park on Saturday but I don't know anything about it.

Please share with me.....
