I was big into the perfume shops when I went to Paris. Shopping is pretty fun over there. Did you get to go to Galleries Lafayette?

Not a word of a lie, I almost missed out on the Louvre because of it! My friend and I finally tore ourselves away from the makeup and made it to the gallery 15 minutes before it closed! Just enough time to find the Mona Lisa and get out (we're so not art fans!)

That's true! Although I seem to be spending more money on makeup and stuff now that I'ved slimmed down a bit - must be that increased self esteem thing! Maybe spark should have a I heart Sephora team :P The Sephora on Champs Elysees in Paris is HEAVEN!!!!!!!!

I don't generally enjoy shopping but, Sephora will zap me in for hours if I'm not careful. I think maybe it's more interactive. Make up is fun to play with and you hardly ever end up with the disappointment of not being able to find anything that fits! ...Unlike clothes shopping!

I LOVE SEPHORA!

I do kind of like Sephora better. I kind of get this, "I'm in the presence of greatness" aura when I walk in the door...it's kind of like hearing the hallelujah chorus. I would love to do a "supermarket sweep" type game show there.
But ULTA is definitely a good one-stop shop kind of thing, especially if you don't want to deal with mall traffic. They like to put them in suburban areas, so I've got one about 10-15 miles from me.
They have a website if you want to get an idea...ulta.com.

It's a big girl store...makeup, nail polish, hair products, perfume, face products, hair accessories, workout equipment...basically anything from blow dryers to eyelash curlers to yoga mats. They sell some of the makeup brands that Sephora carries...like bare minerals, smashbox, etc. They have a salon in the back. Sephora on steroids, basically.
The thing that I like about them is that they sell brands like nivea or oil of olay, but they also sell more of their product lines. Stuff you can't find in your local grocery store anymore.

I think it's some giant makeup store? I have seen some flyers in the paper lately and I think there is one in GR. I've never been to one though. Perhaps it is like a Wal-Mart of makeup stores?

I want to meet the marketing expert that decided workout equipment, videos, etc. needed a spot at ULTA. I'm strolling along checking out makeup one day (new cardio, right?) and suddenly I'm feeling very guilty about not working out...so I'm buying more makeup to compensate for my muffin top. It's really quite genius.

Mine's a Gaiam, but I think I got it at Dick's a few years ago. They've since changed the design and improved upon it. It came with a vhs as well, which is still in the wrapper. I have a Karen Voight dvd that I use with it.
I've seen them in some pretty random places like ULTA or Barnes and Noble.

I agree, the back extensions feel more effective when I perform them on the ball. And the pilates resistance ring really makes a difference! I love mine!

I will say that I do back extensions as part of my strength training and when I do them on the ball versus on the floor, I feel it more the next day.
Try a pilates resistance ring sometime if you really want to get more out of your pilates legwork. They are fairly cheap and easy to find.

Ok. I'm gonna stay in the minority here and send out some love to my ball. LOVE YA, BALL!! LOL

I have a Gunnar Peterson dvd (I think it might be from his core series--Brooke Burke is on the cover but NOT on the dvd) that is really good. It's a total body workout using the ball. Not hard either. Oh, and there's a girl in his posse that does the "beginner" exercises, so you can start out slow and work your way up.

Oh wait!! Does this mean that I'm somehow now aligned with Satan b/c I like the ball?????

Yah I understand the ball is all designed to build muscle control, but let's be honest a lot of it is balance too and when I've got my head upside down I lack it! The ball is a crazy contraption sent by Satan to make us all look stupid so he can laugh at us. I imagine him looking in on the ball classes at the Y and just giggling and chomping on popcorn. Bad Satan!

Even the 'slow swimming on the ball' one! I flail around so much I can barely stay on that thing!

Nemo should be accurate. 162 even. He's been there a few days and I expect maybe within a day or 2 he'll move along again. That's how it seems to go. I think the graph kinda makes it hard to see the numbers accurately as it's by like 5's or 10's or something, but yah 162 for the past couple days. Go Nemo go! Thanks for the congrats too guys. I love all the support on here. I'm a pretty disciplined when I put my mind to something but this is the first time in my life I feel like I've changed my way of life and not just had a short term diet as a means to an end. emoticon

Wow! Your chart is probably right on for how it's supposed to go, too! Nice job.

I have those elastic bands, too, but don't mind them at all. I have a Denise Austin dvd where she uses them, so I'm used to them sans handles. The only things that I have that I really don't use is a jump rope and ankle weights.

Dude, that's AWESOME!!! You've done so well! Mine dropped a bunch right off the start, then went slow slow slow but steadily down. Then it plateaued a bit, spiked up after my vacation and now has returned to a slow descent.

BTW, you totally need to update your ticker!

Well it was just a couple days of camping and yep I stayed on track. I packed cans of beans & ravioli, fat free hot dogs, lite whole wheat bread, reduced fat pb & j, and lots of 100 calorie packs and granola bars. I did in fact lose. I wish I could "share" my little weight loss chart thingie here like you can the trackers. It's been slow n steady the whole way. I should just screen shot it and upload to my domain. Ok I'm doing it. Here's a link:

Well you see, I didn't actually watch it. I was scoping out tvguide.com to see what trash I would watch while on the exercise bike and I noticed it was showing on ESPN2 - it made me think of you! How's the program going? Did you manage to maintain while on vacation or did you pull a Shannon and gain? Or were you so busy you lost? I hope that's what happened!

i bought the elastic ones because i was being cheap and didn't want to pay more for the bungee ones with handles. i didn't like not having handles because i can't do the cool leg exercise thing they showed in an email on here. boo. most my equipment at home sits with dust. i'd rather go to the y. then again i don't feel i go to the y enough and i think what if some day i have to cut back on expenses and can only work out at home and i've gotten rid of the other stuff. for now i don't need it, but then i might.

Ditto on the free weights! I'm all for Windor Pilates dvds too - that circle thingy is genious! It really helps you figure out how to do the moves correctly and maintain proper form. I had the old dvds and was never 100% sure I was doing them right - now I know I am!

I bought some latex stretch bands and don't really like them... they're not much use without handles (which is what I thought I was buying, you know, resistance bands). But because I lost the receipt a tied loops at the ends of them and voila - handles!

I tried the Hip Hop Abs dvds, didn't like 'em, returned 'em.

Hmmm (to use my most hated phrase), maybe we should turn this frown upside down . . . Is there any exercise equipment that you WOULD give your endorsement to?

As for me, I do love my balance ball (please don't hate me). I think it's an awesome bargain IMO. Also, I think I would throw a hissy fit if someone tried to take my free-weights away. They are fairly cheap as well. . . if you buy them as you need them.

I was doing some online shopping yesterday and saw the bosu ball costs 100$ - no thanks! I haven't wanted to invest a big pile of money on fitness equipment and that one definitely doesn't sound worth it!

Alecia, I enjoy pilates but on 'the rack' might not be so fun!

Shannon, I definitely agree. Satan definitely has his hands in the creation of most exercise equipment...have you seen what some of those pilates machines look like? Kind of similar to the 'rack'...
Candis, yikes is right. There gets to a point with the cost of exercise equipment where I begin to think "how many shoes/jeans/etc. could I buy for $150?"

Alecia- I'm not really sure what it's called. I remember when Reebok 1st came out w/ its balance board, and I think they were over $150.00. Yikes!!

I have a semi deflated ball - it's lost it's pump so it's very squdgy - it sits behind a chair in the living room - like some ominous moon - use it??? You have to be joking - I get car sick if I'm in the back of a car - I have no sense of balance anymore - and just watching others who are nimble and fit trying to do things on it almost makes me cry with laughter - that's the only thing it's good for - making you laugh!

I think it's called a BOSU? Is that the same one that you've seen? It's going for around 100 and that's a little pricey for me (but there's always ebay). But, I figured I'd ask and see if it's from Satan too.

Do you mean that balance board thing that looks like it has a half a ball in the center? If so, I would definitely like to try it, but they are kinda pricey. I'll just have to stick w/ my ball . . .

Not that I use the ball terribly much, but when I do use it, it is a pretty good workout.
If you have a ball at home, Karen Voight has a workout tape/dvd "BLT" (though not as yummy as a b.l.t.) it is a quick 15 minutes of butt, leg and tummy exercises. I like it alright.
My one complaint about my ball is that heightwise I'm about 5-8ish, my ball is made for 5-5ish at most. So squats involving the ball are a no-go.
I can say the ball takes some getting used to.
Has anyone tried that half-ball thing? I've been curious to try it.

I've often wondered about those 'things' myself. Perhaps when my room mate leaves (for good!) this weekend I can get skinny to, um, 'support' me on the evil ball!

I'm pretty good with the ball. Well, pretty good except for those one-legged squats Shannon is talking about. WHO can do those anyway???

Practice does make perfect for ball activity, tho.

Oh, and as a side note, the bf has told me some of the things HE would like to use that ball for. I can't seem to bring myself to indulge him, tho. LOL

Suz, you're a rock star if you can tame that ball! I just got through with some strength training and used the ball as a bench for some bench presses. OMG, how the hell do you stay on that thing!? I was just laying there and couldn't balance! After that I moved on to the single leg squats with the ball, where you put it behind your back and roll up and down the wall on one leg... I need chairs on BOTH sides of me to keep from falling over!

I'm gonna tame that ball if it kills me! Maybe I need a ball whisperer, like a horse whisperer?

So to answer all of your questions, it was a swiss ball - one of those exercise balls. I have one at home and I like to think I'm quite talented on the ball...we're talking pushups and the whole nine yards...but in this class I was like a retarded fish in a pool of jello. It was NOT cute. And like I said I kept getting head rushes from being inverted on the ball.

But oh well...maybe I'll go to class again this thursday and pop the teachers ball - that'd be funny. Mean, but friggin hilarious.

Has anyone seen that clip from the tv show The Office? I don't know the character's name, but the dorky guy is bouncing around on one of those balls at his desk, and the 'cool' guy asks him how much he paid for it. Dorky guy says $30, and 'cool' guy grabs a pair of scissors and punctures it. It made me giggle!

I bought the ball and haven't used it much yet. It is great for strengthening that core, or so I'm told.

for now, my son bounces around on it while watching cartoons.

I guess that's useful..... for him

I'm only as strong as the coffee I drink and the hair spray I use...

One girl from my work uses the ball. She HATES exercise of any kind, so when she does 10 minutes on the ball, she is super excitedabout her good workout! I hear it is very good for abs. I like to think Im a little more hardcore then bouncing around liek a fool. lol.

I have a fear of the exercise ball - not because I've tried it, but because I know I have bad balance.

I have a great mental image of me rolling around with the ball in a cloud of dust with arms and legs flailing - much like a cartoon :)

I'm sure it is a good workout though!

I like to just sit on an exercise ball, sometimes it is a good ab workout just trying to stay stable on it. A boll class would be difficult though. Good job to the person who did it!! emoticon

my sister got me a ball (with no spikes) for christmas a few years ago. At first I felt like a newborn giraffe but after a couple more tries (in the privacy of my own home) it got a lot easier. It is a good workout once you get the hang of it but definitely needs some in front of the mirror practice before going public.

If we're talking Swiss ball, no you're not alone. Many moons ago, my ex received a 'massaging' exercise ball from a family member for Christmas. There was nothing relaxing about this ball!!! It was covered in spikey things that really hurt the belly flab, or anything else you pressed up against it. It just sat in the corner, looking cool (cause it was purple and spikey).

Well, at one point my friend Andrea came over and spotted the cool purple spikey ball. She exclaimed, "Oh hey, an exercise ball! My grandparents have one of those!" and proceeded to lunge, stomach first, onto this thing after putting it in the middle of the living room floor. What followed was nothing short of embarassing/painfu/hilarious to watch. It was winter, and like any good Canadian girl, Andrea was wearing a wool sweater. The wool snagged onto the spikes and poor Andrea went crashing head first into the coffee table as she velcro-ed to the ball. Luckily, no friends or coffee tables were hurt in the making of this story, but we sure laughed for a long time at poor Andrea's expense!

I bought myself an exercise ball when I started this spark adventure a few months ago. I'm so slack on my strength training it's pathetic. But when I do drag the ball out to do one or two exercises on it, it's difficult until I get the hang of it. I can only imagine what this would feel like in a room full of people! Suz, you're so much braver than I!!!

Ok, so yesterday I took an "on the ball" class with my best friend Sarah (Travelinmom) and it was NOT fun. Not that I think working out is super fun at all, but this SUCKED. I have never felt so unbalanced in my life, and I kept getting head rushes.

Am I ball retarded or have others had the same experience?

I guess I'll just have to stick to hiking...
