Kitesurfing! On vacation I drove by Hood River in Oregon and saw windsurfers and kitesurfers and am dying to try. I hear that windsurfing requires a lot of shoulder and back strength so I probably have to beef up a bit before I can windsurf, but kitesurfing looks like so much fun and not too hard... anybody try it?

It's supposed to be a good core workout and really good for both upper and lower extremities as well. Plus fun! emoticon

Has anyone heard of the new sport....I think it's called paddle boarding? Anyway, you stand on a surf board and paddle around a lake or pond (or ocean if you have one handy). I got to try it this past weekend and didn't even fall off! It was quite a kick! I'm going to try it again.

Anyone have experience with this one?

I'm not sure if this question is referring only to outdoor activities, but I'm dying to have a go at kickboxing! As for outdoor activities, I've tried a lot, so I don't really have any new ones coming to mind. But my favourites are swimming, hiking, longboarding (flat and downhill) and kayaking :)

I have always wanted to learn to water ski. We have the boat and even got given a pair of water skis last year. What's the hold up, right?? I've been doing lots of Turbo Jam since last summer so I am in much better physical shape to make it happen this year so I'm finally gonna give it a try :):) .+^*^+. I Can't wait .+^*^+.

Hi, I'm new to this group and would love to try surfing! I live in Santa Barbara, so there's plenty of surfing around me, but until this year, I never felt like I was fit enough to stand up on a board. After a lot of core strengthening workouts, I think I can do it. Now it's just a matter of finding affordable lessons around here...I wish I had a surfer friend that could teach me.

...like a few of you, I really wanted to try surfing and after a couple of lessons, loved it so much I just bought my wetsuit and board (and booties ...british water is freezing even in summer!). I'm having great fun getting used to my board and don't care that I wipeout way more than I bag a wave :) ...they've just started hiring kayaks at a beach nearby so definitely giving that a go too...you guys are lucky in the States, you have so much more stuff you can try having such a varied landscape....very jealous

My personal pep talk:
I do not have to be ‘in the mood’ in order to start the work. By starting the work my mood will improve knowing I am on track.

Another vote for surfing! I was booked up for a weekend class a couple of years ago on a trip to San Diego, but it was the one time in the last 50-odd years when there was a fatal shark attack in the area, so they'd closed the beaches!

I'd like to do some more caving too. I've just started cave-diving which is loads of fun and challenging, but exploring some dry caves and learning more about them is definitely on my list.

I love kayak surfing (I used my "creek" boat, a river kayak). We would wait till a hurricane was offshore and waves were big... folk would be leaving the area in droves, and we were driving the other way, out to the beach with our boats on the cars!

Biggest adreneline rush ever for me. Pre "Bonnie" some years back, went with friends, found other kayakers in the surf. So difficult to get out beyond the breaking waves! No diving under waves like a swimmer or board surfer could, several times mashed just trying to get out.

Finally, way out there, big swells beneath us - waiting for a set. Then... a wave comes and 2-3 catch it and go in. Then the next - everyone else but me - so I am out there - alone! Oh I was inspired then , caught the next wave, road it in WHEEEE!

Have young ones now, and haven't been in a river kayak for some 8 years now. But we have plans to hit the beach this summer and do a family lesson or two on surfboards. I am psyched!

Meanwhile - just found this, check it out! (surfing at the end!)

I want to learn how to surf! I love the ocean and now I'm living right by it and I haven't even gotten in the water yet! It's been a cold winter though so hopefully I'll get around to a lesson sometime soon. I also want to try a new kind of surf kayaking. I have an ocean kayak that I love taking out in the surf, but I saw a video recently of a guy in a whitewater baby kayak on the big waves actually surfing them and not just riding them in like in an ocean kayak! Now that looks like fun! emoticon

I have been trying to get creative and fit in fun things I like. Seems like such a shoehorn process.

I've looked into something I think will be fun - a family surf lesson - weekend this summer! And pushing for a rails-to-trails weekend early summer in the mts.

i definately had a few of those moments as well. Everytime we passed through something i would immediately turn around and say "now how in the world are we gonna get back up that". Luckily for me, this cave had several different passages and ways you could go.

The only thing i found more frightening than getting stuck for a whopping 2 minutes(which seemed like hours in my head)was that part of the cave was comprised of wet muddy slippery rocks. Knowing you had to climb rocks with a 20 foot or more drop on both sides of you, each side lined with sharp edges of rocks and holes taking you god knows where, almost made me poop myself.

Luckily for me, i went with a group of guys that were really supportive, taught me how to slow down, stay calm, and control my breathing, taking the time to show me the best path to take and why it was the path they took, and not pushing me any further than i wanted to go. I think this made all the difference in the world. I cant wait to go back.

Caving! Biggest adrenaline burst I've ever had, one time when I was headed back out alone to get some rescue gear from the car, and found some things that are easy to climb down into are more difficult to climb up out of... I worked it out in short order but for a moment I was just overwhelmed by my own chemistry!

whitewater kayaking is amazing. you should definately try it. Depending on where you live, you should look into a weekend clinic or even a weekend of private lessons. It will get you enough basic skills to take a boating trip. I recommend everyone do this when they are thinking of taking up the sport. I love love LOVE kayakin!

This weekend I did some serious caving. I found it completely different than i had imagined. There were definately some hairy moments in there. I used muscles i didnt know i had and learned a greater appreciate for self awareness. i cant wait to go again. It was literally indescribable

I would LOVE to try sailing, I have been on a sailboat a couple of times years ago, but I'd love to learn how to actually SAIL.

I would also like to try skiing (both snow and water).

Oh, and I'd like to TRY playing sports ... now that I've had lasik. When I was younger and forced to play sports, I didn't realize how bad my eyesight was. It's no wonder I was terrible at sports, I couldn't see the ball! LOL

For those of you looking to try kayaking, I highly recommend it. I personally do mostly whitewater, and it's amazing. One thing to look into is local kayaking clubs. A good place to start (if you're in the US) is www.americanwhitewater.org/ . If you look in your region, you can find what rivers are being run and usually figure out which club is in your area. Also, end of season is a great time to pick up used boats, be they touring, surf or whitewater for much cheaper. Some places have sales going on through the winter.

I personally want to get back into running, try a martial art and get better at yoga! If only there were enough hours in the day...

Well I wasn't dying to try it but I have taken up snowboarding. I find it fun now that I am not fall ever 2 seconds. I need a new challenge and snowboarding sure works the whole body out.

I have a friend that wants to longboard I may try it out with her.

We had a very warm weekend last weekend and I got to get out and rollerblade. I can't wait for winter to be over.

I get out and walk almost everyday and try to ski 3 to 5 times a season. Iceskating is great in the winter.

I would love to try surfing someday.

Hi Cadence!! While I'm not quite a kiteboarder - I DO fly "power kites" - and it's the BIGGEST RUSH!!!!

I started with a "two line trainer kite" (most are a type called a ram-air foil); then graduated to a 4-line, 3-meter kite. It's big enough to pull me across the snow on skis or pull a buggy.

Of course, once you get addicted....LOL!... then you get a harness and buy a bigger kite..... I now have a 7-meter (about 17' wide) and a 10-meter (about 22' wide). At the tender age of 56, I've never learned to ride a "board" - so I simply do something called "body-dragging" - where the kites pull me through the water. It's way too fun - and an incredible workout (although it's so much fun you don't feel it 'til you're back home...LOL!)

The ideal situation would be to learn to fly a training kite really well; then take some lessons from a shop, who will provide the equipment.

Take care!

Deb

Daisy ~ Boogie Board is a small rectangular piece of foam, wider then a surf board and not as long. The foam can be re-shaped by the rider. It’s a board you use to ride the waves. You can stand on it if you want but I think most people lie on their stomachs.

Surfing uses a narrower board used to ride waves also but the rider typically stands on it.

We went floating on sunday, wished I had my kayak here, there were plenty of slow eddys and a good number of spots that had some faster water.Would have been perfect for me! We were in a john boat, was fun but made for hard paddling. We did end up capsizing once because of water conditions and debris but it was still so fun! Took 7+ hours from launching to docking,LONG day!!!

I want to learn how to surf! I took a lesson in FL in March but then had knee surgery, so I will be taking this up next Spring, so my reward to myself after losing 50 lobs will be lessons and board/wetsuit!!!

I also want to learn how to kayak!
Have a great day!

I wish I wasnt such a chicken to try more than flat water paddling! Maybe once Ive been doing it a while I will feel more confident. Since Im a midwestern girl I have a question for you all, what is the difference between boogie boarding and surfing?

Surfing is something that I have always wanted to try too. I love the beach, but the closest I've gotten to surfing is boogie-boarding! I also love to kayak, but have only done so on flat water. I would love to try white water kayaking.

I would love to find something to do in the wintertime outside, too. I have tried snowboarding, and really like it, but can't do it as often as I would like to get physical benefits from it. Snowshoeing is a good one to try...

I really, really want to try surfing. Being landlocked in Ohio I haven't been able to do it yet. Although, I have seen that a lot of people surf the Great Lakes. Insane! Anyway, have been wanting to save up this year to take a women's surf camp in San Diego with Surf Divas. What about everyone else? What have you been wanting to try?
