Hi, I heard about the Silver Sneakers program and would like to get involved in it, but haven't figured out how it works. I'm 61 and on disability and would like to find a gym. A friend told me she's joining and will be able to participate at the local YMCA without a charge. Is this true? If so, how do I sign up? I've lost 22 pounds now on Weight Watchers and am following that program. It's working well but need to get the exercise part in more often. I do water aerobics twice a week but walking has been tough. Not only am I having a bout of sciatica, but living in Minnesota is hard to go outside in the winter. I'd be happy to hear/read here about what others are doing. Good health, Kathy

Hi. I'm ashamed to say that I started Silver Sneakers group under the name Tenngramm, but dropped out. Seems that you are doing fine without me. I tried to get back but couldn't log in, so I rejoined under a new name,"Newgoal". I'm 83 and after caring for my husband through Alzheimer's and cancer, I came to FL to look after my mother for almost 7 years. I have lost some weight on my own, but, since my mother died at 102, I want to lose the rest before I return to TN in January. I can use all the help I can get.
I go to Silver Sneakers exercise classes for seniors. That's where I got the name for this group. My hobbyis redunfing,(sebdubg fir rebates ibn groceries, toiletries, etc.) I have to be strict with myself if there is a rebate on fattening foods.
Hope to find a buddy to lose weight with.

Hi, I just joined this group tonight and after I joined I noticed that all of the posts except this one is old.
I decided to join because I am a senior and I just joined the YMCA, which has a silver sneakers program and I thought maybe others on this team belonged to silver sneakers also and I would be able to get some support and motivation. I don't know be I will give this group a try.

Im not new but I havnt been on the site for over 2 months, got a little disheartened that nothing was happening, go sick of watching my food intake. Just got sick of food, I lost a little weight still but did it the wrong way, I cut myself to 2 meals a day, I got under the 170lb mark but I also lost energy. I also started to eat everything in sight when I got home from work, so that stopped working for me to so now I got my sanity back and Im back to spark people. I think the cut back on meals was kind of good in a way, at least I know I dont have to worry I havnt packed enough food for my lunch and that a bowl of soup will be fine because I have gone 2 months without lunch altogether.

Good Morning!
I'm 63, been married for 43 years and we have one daughter and two grandsons. June 2nd, I hit 160 pounds and decided to get serious about losing it. I started counting calories and have lost 22 pounds in that short of time due to no cheating. It feels good to get back into my jeans. We live out in the country on an acreage where we have 6 sweet Orpington chickens, and many fruit trees. Apricot, Plum, Peach, Pear, cherry and Apple. Our grapes are a feast for all the birds we feed year around, trouble is they plant them all over our yard. emoticon

Greetings: I'm not really a newbie. I've been a "not-so-regular member of Spark People for over a year. I think the major problem is that I've been unable to find a team that fits my needs. Why didn't I find you sooner. However,it's never too late! On October 7 I will be 60 years old. I'm a middle school teacher in NYC - stress and anxiety are evil enemies. 2 1/2 years ago I had parathyroid surgery and shortly afterwards its seems as though my metabolism sunk to an all time low and no matter what I do I can't seem to stay motivated. I'm struggling. Somehow I think Silver Sneakers will be my salvation. Today is my new beginning. Thank you for being here. emoticon

Hi I lost my husband last year to cancer and felt like I lost myself too. I'm beginning to find myself again and have been exercising and eating more sensibly too. I used to live in upstate NY but after he died I decided to move to Florida and the warm weather and beautiful scenery here have been a great motivator for my diet.

Hi, I am a newbie. This looks like a great team. I am excited to get going.
I want to change my whole way of eating and start exercising more.
Somehow eating the Southern food that I grew up with isn't helping me lose weight. LOL
Hopefully I will find some good ideas and recipes here. I appreciate any suggestions...ctawna

Hi Silver Sneakers, I am new here. To those who are looking for an exercise where you don't have to go down on the floor: have you heard of qigong or chi kung which is an ancient Chinese self-help system which increases your overall energy, improves your stamina, and revitalizes your whole bodymind? I am 64 years old and have been teaching this system for a couple of years incl. to seniors. It can be done while sitting in a chair: gentle movements with deep breathing and attention to the present.
I certainly feel so much better....

Good morning! Claudine, nice to see you. When hubby wanted me to eat icecream with him each evening, I just stuck to my streak of nothing after * oclock, first then moving it up to nothing after supper. Guess what, he is doing it with me now and we both seem to enjoy our meals more during the day.

Will, we have a few people in Silver sneakers that have had hip/knee replacements. The chair exercises have helped them get back into the swing of things. We do quite a bit of balance work standing behind our chairs too. You might check the exercises here and see what ones you can do. There are many to use while seated or using the back of a chair for support.

Have a good day!!

You might check you local gyms to see if they have a Silver Sneakers program. They have exercises that you can do seated. You get a good hour workout, whetner you stand or sit. My HMO pays for the program, butg you can join and pay if your HMO doesn't include it.

Hi-thank you so much for your Warm Welcome for my Wife
and I.
My Home State of Wisconsin had a oouple of fairly heavy snow storms last week.
Occasionally,we get snow here in Grafenhausen(Germany),but this Winter we only had snow one day,and that was just early morning-and by later in the day most of it had melted.
They get more snow to the North and South of Germany, than we do,where we are.
My Wife and I were sitting out on our Apartment Balcony,a little while ago-enjoying a very nice sunny afternoon. The Temp was probably in the 70's.
I'm very impressed with this SP site, aside from the many good resources-meeting several friendly people.
My situation is-I need to be able to find a way to get more exercise.
I have a condition with my right hip/leg/knee and back-which is preventing me from being able to do much exercising.Hopefully,we'll be able to get over to an inside swimming pool in our neighboring Town,so
I can get some exercise that way.
I'm doing well with my eating program-just the exercise I need to be able to do,to balance my weight
loss/fitness programs out witn.
Wishing you continued success, and happiness.Hope your Weather will improve there for you real soon.

Hi-You All "Young People"(well in Spirit,anyway- :)}
My name is Bill-aka Will.My Wife(Maggie)and I live in
a little Village in Germany called Grafenhausen(between Darmstadt and Frankfurt.I'm 70,and my Wife is 72.
We went to High School in Los Angeles,Ca.-S'53.
We're happy to be using SP-and are determined to lose
considerable amount of weight,no matter how long it takes. We want to overcome some physical conditions,be more mobile-and live healthier lives alltogether.
Ours is an amazing and interesting Story-both how we
come to be here in Germany-and how we were Married, after not having any contact with one another for 50 years after graduating from High School.
I'll be back in awhile-to tell the rest of the Story-as Paul Harvey likes to say.
Best Wishes for the others on this team-hope to get to know many of you.
