Right now, because I just joined 3 weeks ago, and I'm retired, my biggest problem is going out to eat with friends.

When there's food available at events, such as after church or at a party or a meeting, I find it very hard to resist. I don't want to offend the person who provided it.

Losing slowly has become my goal, because when I went on a basically starvation diet several years ago, my skin was hanging with lots of wrinkles. I also have several health issues to deal with, while maintaining good nutrition. I have to stick to a very low sodium diet, or I retain lots of water, which increases the likelihood of stroke. And depression's an issue for me, too.

I am also convinced that exercise seems to me to be really important. Not only can it strengthen bones and muscles while burning calories, it has a big effect on our mental outlook, as well as our sleep quality, which in and of itself also has multiple repercussions on our health.

When we have a bunch of issues like this, it does make it difficult, for sure. I think about 2/3 of it is believing it can happen. I know it can - I watched my niece lose close to 100 pounds last year using Spark People religiously, and doing some sort of exercise every day. I have depression myself, and that does make things more difficult, but I know that I feel better and sleep better when I exercise.

Also - did you know that eating after 6 p.m. has been shown scientifically to disrupt your sleep? Try not doing it - you'll be amazed. Especially avoid protein - for some reason that is one of the biggest problems. Remember, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us!! Even lose weight!!

My biggest problem losing weight is trying to figure out how to put the whole gluten free thing and weight loss together, and do it while fighting some new health problems. Just a giant pain that leads to inertia!! I eat healthily - have no processed foods in the house, but if I eat a calorie, I swear it sticks to this 66 year old abdomen for life!!!

I have two problems losing weight. First, I was always naturally thin. At 5'5" I weighed about 115 lbs. throughout my adult life. I ate anything and everything I wanted and never gained weight. After menopause I gained 20 lbs. After retirement, I gained another 20. Since I never had to diet before I haven't a clue what to do.

Secondly, my husband loves to eat out. He would eat out three times a day if I would agree. Our town only has fast food restaurants and a few greasy spoon cafes. The proprietors only know how to batter and fry foods and french fries come with everything. And if you try to order something healthy like a tossed salad, they punish you by charging extra for substituting the salad for fried potatoes and bread. And whole wheat bread? They never heard of it! I'll bet an entrepreneur could make a bundle if he/she opened a healthy food restaurant here in the Northlands. I really believe everyone wants to look good, feel good, and do the right thing. We may just need a little help. We can't all have personal fitness/nutrition trainers like celebrities do, but a healthy food restaurant that is affordable and serves a delicious and varied menu seems like just the ticket.

Sorry to be so long-winded. Thanks so much for letting me vent!

My biggest problem is eating after dinner and CHEESE (love it). I liked the reply relating to
high fibre snacks. This 77 year old had a good week - minus 2 pounds. and is going for a repeat starting now. PS I ate a lot of coleslaw minus mayo. emoticon

Being consistant and NOT getting bored. Sigh ...

I start out getting some new recipes, then get bored with them because I make too much and forget to freeze them in single portions. Blah blah blah.

One of these days I'll get it right, I'm sure I'll get it right. Maybe the new year is the place to start???

Hello there, DJATSW47. I usually start off slow and easy, but the later it gets in the day, the more I want. And what I want is usually not too healthy for a diabetic. Maybe I'll learn before it's too late. I haven't given up the fight yet.

Can you take some granola bars or the like with you to snack on between breakfast and lunch? That's a long time to go between meals. You're body starts to hang on to every calorie because it thinks it is in a famine. Give it a try and let me know how it works.

Hugs, emoticon

I have two big problems: 1. portion control and 2. being hungry all the time between meals, especially in the mornings as I have to eat breakfast around 6am or earlier and then don't have a chance to eat lunch until aroun 1 to 2 pm.

Hi Elaine3500- I too reached 70 this year. I chose this sight because it was the most positive in outlook.
Good for you for reaching your weight goal and MAINTAINING it!! To me, that is the best part of Sparkpeople; it's about making a lifestyle change, it's not a diet. Big difference.
I'm glad you are still enjoying ice cream while adjusting for it. We need to continue to find the joy in life and live it to the fullest.

Just wanted to stop in and say Nighty Night. I pulled a muscle or something in my hip/lower back, was so miserable last night that I didn't get on to post. Felt better today as the day went on.

Our Son came and we took Ginger to get her groomed this morning, we came home and he mowed, edged, and raked leaves and bagged them (7-8 large black bags of them).

Hope everyone has a good night's rest. Spark hugs and prayers to all.

Oh, Ebby. That just sounds so miserable. My heart goes out to you. I'm not a professional, but I've had experience with gluten intolerance while my friend has gluten Celiac Disease. I jumped on her diet and it cleared up my gluten intolerance.

While you seem very relient on just a few foods, that can turn into an intolerency. I know it will be tough testing other foods, but I would think it important to get with a dietician recommended by your doc.

Good grief, gal, we need to cheer you up and help cheer you to a healthier life. Ya poor little thing.

Can we count that?

Let's go forth and concure

Phyllis: I hear ya, sweetie. Try pinching your earlobes for about 1-2 minutes. I know, I laughed too when someone mentioned it, but I was desperate so gave it a try. The hardest part is remembering to do it while you're tossing and turning and getting up and then back down ... blah blah blah. You know the drill.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes. OK?

There are always multiple problems with losing weight. For me it is usually three things:

Diabetes-using insulin makes you fatter.

Insomnia-being unable to sleep encourages me to eat at night.

Other Medications: My tummy is sensitive, steroids mess with the blood sugar and requires higher doses which leads to more weight.

Just to throw a little more into the mix: I'm dealing with depression and low self-worth after a sexual assault. Hope that isn't TMI (too much information).

I've recently had surgery on my left foot which went well. I dropped a plaque on my foot and had to go to a physical therapist who electrically burned my foot in two places. Not fun. Don't do it, okay? emoticon

Is that enough yet?

However, to offset these problems, I have a positive attitude, good family and friends who are supportive, SP, and the help of the Lord. Pretty powerful, eh? emoticon

So where do we go from here?

Gosh, second response. My hardest part is juggling 3 different health considerations for food.
Heart
Arthritis Stomach (worn out from NSAIDS)
Gluscose intolerant

Heart needs fiber.
Fiber hurts stomach.
Body needs protein.
Protein aggravates stomach.
Carbs:
Complex may irritate stomach depending.
Simple throw me into glucose.
Glucose triggers my (pseudo-gout/CPPD)sister crystaline sydrome to uric acid
(gout) crystaline disease
Pseudo-gout bedfasts me for up to 6 months, unable to walk and be in pain.

Total quanity eaten at a time doesn't go above 3/4 Cup.

A month or so of that and can venture out carefully.

Food is chosen to avoid the 2 hour after misery, logginess, discomfort, fatigue, and unability to move, just sleep. After a while food is a non enity.
Food is equal to the essentials of life that one doesn't think about.
Except how to find enough papaya all winter. New plan is pureeing it, freezing it in vacuum seal little containers.

I am 10 to 15 pounds overweight/5'2" and while you may roll your eyes am so miserable, with a belly. Weight drains my energy.

Adore thin; it is like having your teeth cleaned, hair cut, nails clipped, and house clean.
15 extra pounds; it is like dragging a chain hung around your midriff.
Thin; my heart flies.
Heavy; my soul crumples into a knot and I retreat into an alone state where I have no people and work. Which!!!!is not all bad!

Two of you have befriended me. Thank-you.

Staying on track with food. I try to keep snacks out but it is hard. My biggest problem is eating at night! Phyllis

Salty snacks and desserts. The improvement is that I do not "pig out" any more. Onward and upward.... I do eat so much better than I did 5 years ago. emoticon

I am new to this group, and not sure where the general discussion is. I am 79, DH is 83. I belong to Curves through Humana, and the Y also. Haven't been able to go lately as DH has had to have so many Dr. appts, and tests.

Looking forward to getting acquainted. Just let me know where the general conversations are. :)

I am 70 and the hubby is 74. We are both retired. No alarms, but, still like clock-work we get up at 5am every morning!!!..Even the weekends. We are envolved in volunteer programs. We are at Church by 7:15 a.m. to do the little things we do. I would probably feel worse if I did sleep-in.

Hi!
I think I'm replying to someone! If I eat an apple a day my weight goes down. It is filling and what else not sure.
If I use that um "done" moment that comes about 1/3 the way through the eating. When I just put my fork or spoon aside to reach turn off something else, almost forgetting my food...realize that what is on the plate is Just On the Plate! Because it is there I do not need to finish it!
If I put a decent amount on, and leave a bit of it.
If I'm still hungry and want to gobble that and more up I force myself to wait 20 minutes the promise I'll finish then.
THEN comes and I'm so full wish I hadn't eaten all of the first amount.

My best method, sorry to say is when my meds so bother my stomach that the pain and discomfort won't let me eat.

I loose weight and then feel sooo good, look good (the absolute difference in people's response when at that "edge" is so noticable!). Eat a pound or two on and I am ignored. Eat at that point in total weight and people turn away. Cut it below that point and around the people come.

Dairy Queen I buy by the quart and could go though 3 quarts. Same for pizza (but it hurts my stomach). Sweets I cannot do because I'm now glucose intolerant. The difference for me is if I go over that at all, I do not have diabetes yet, but I do have CPPD, and it is adversely affected by the slightest sugar. So I'm bedfast and in pain for a long time if it runs away with me.

I've more thoughts on it. They are with me. And while I was writing for someone else, realize now how powerful what I'm thinking is for me.

I like what I'm thinking about so much will not add it now to all of the above. Will write it alone so it gives it more readablity and I need off to do some things.

From my CPPD am slightly affected at present and have only a short time to be up.

Ebby

My husband snacks all the time (he can afford to) and sometimes it gets to me and I start to snack with him. He has sweets around the house.

I'm new to this group and I have a big problem with snacking late in the evening. I do good on what I eat, it is just I eat too much. I am not active enough and I know this would help. Just need the motivation. emoticon

My knees give me such grief! After years of abuse, they hurt most of the time; even walking hurts SO much! I'm trying to build up my quads to support my torn meniscus. Ouch!

Not increasing my exercise is my biggest problem.
I have a book called "Getting Old Ain't For Wimps"
Being old is one thing but not wanting to be old and sickly discourages me from overeating.

Thanks for the tip with string cheese. I forgot about them and did not realize that they do not have many calories. Better than chocolate! Drinking water helps me too! My biggest problem is staying motivated when my husband loses so fast and I meander behind. I love being a woman but darn it! We do have to work so much harder, especially after 50. I have to retrain my husband to not think I need to eat as much as he does.
Oh and the biggy is going somewhere that serves free cookies and/or cake. The little girl inside of me says, Oh goodie! cake! I never buy myself cake, please, please, pretty please!

To CARITASBO and probably many others------

The biggest thing that helps me to avoid snacking (after brushing your teeth) is to either chew peppermint gum or to suck on peppermint BreathSavers. Start with a full glass of water and your choice of 1 of the above. Almost all of the time the craving to snack goes away.

Sometimes a bit of protein is helpfull. I use light string cheese (only 50 cal each). So several string cheese sticks, full glass of water, etc(you get the idea! then sign on here and type away...........

Hugs,

Congratulations on your successful weight loss! emoticon
Your problem reminds me of my husband. He changed his lifestyle and stopped eating two eggs in the morning. His cholesterol was good before, he had just read two eggs each morning was not good. His cholesterol rose immediately. The reason being was that his body got out of balance, noticed the change and began making it's own cholesterol. Now his cholesterol is balanced again. The body wants balance and can over do getting back to balance. Give your body some time to adjust to your new lifestyle. I believe in the power of your body fixing such temporary over adjustments. Again, you are my hero! I am wanting to reach your weight loss soon. Good that you did start exercising again....keep it up, it makes you feel sooooo good.

I'm new also, but I'm beginning to find my way around the boards and all the helpful areas. The thing(s) that keep me from losing weight is lack of willpower, not be truly accountable and back pain that keeps me from doing many exercises. Hoping to read something or learn something new that will help me. Thanks for listening.

Wow!! I inspire you! I haven't heard that before during this diet program. I got started on exercise because my body produces its own bad cholesterol and my doctor told me to lose some weight and EXERCISE to combat it(I can't take statin drugs).

Now I've lost 12-15 lbs but 2 weeks ago I went to see my doctor after 7 mos. on this program and my cholesterol HAD GONE UP!!! In part discouragement from this news and then fighting the winter (2 week virus)didn't keep me motivated. I'm trying everything now.

But I did start exercising again this morning...even if just to keep the limbs from getting stiff. And it is a good idea to alter one's routine to help motivation.

Thanks for the response...you are encouraging me!

In the Fitness Section I read that we should change the exercises we do every 4 to 6 weeks. Would this be a factor?

Although, going for MONTHS is fantastic! I certainly have never been that faithful to it. You're inspiring me!!

Glad you got your sleep. I only "need" about 6 hours according to what I hear about my age, but I often get more. I generally go to bed early and watch two or three movies before I go to sleep, but wake before anyone else in the household. J. says she must get back on a "normal" schedule so she can go back to work as soon as the MD okays it.

Surprisingly tho I got up three times last night to go to the bathroom, I was able to get back to sleep right away and got about 6 1/2-7 hrs of sleep. But who knows about tonight.

I just did some online Christmas shopping; Hubby and I decorated the porch of our house this morning. No wind, thank goodness, but the air is still nippy at 26 degrees and cloudy, uggh!

I'm fighting a mild head cold...so I won't be doing my exercises. I only gained a pound back while on vacation in Mexico, so I'm not feeling too bad about that. I'm staying in today to get rid of this cold...I'm using ZICAM...it's the only thing I can take considering I can't take the usual over-the- counter cold medicines and it does work fast.

I'm glad to hear you are feeling better. A positive attitude does wonders for the spirit and one's health. emoticon

I guess worrying about getting more uninterrupted sleep is truly counterproductive. I often find myself turning on the radio in the early morning hours and then drift off.

I'll try not to get more sleep but take it as it comes.

It is good to realize that while in one's 70s one does not have to punch a clock. Amen.

Good for you mattie.
A few yrs ago I found that if I have caffine at 10 am it still keeps me awake at night.Every one thought I was krazy. But, I guite all caffine and it worked.
Another thing is don't eat anything after eight at night. If I have sweets at that time I sweat all night.Or if I eat anything I dont sleep as well.
I used to think if I got up and had some thing to eat Iwould sleep better. But it is just the devel talking to you
I also use the radio to sleep.Or t.v. set on the sleep button.Even in the middle of the night I put the radio on.As my mine travels to all the things I should do,or didnt do,or went wrong. The radio makes you think of other things.
Hope this helps some.
Eley

Most Seniors sleep irregularly. I used to worry about it, but a good friend with medical training put me at ease. I do not have to go to work in the mornings and the people in my household can get their own breakfast. Stress is more harmful than lack of sleep so I no longer worry; some nights I simply turn the TV back on (generally with the timer set for two hours) and watch until I drop off. When I wake up and feel like it I get up. I eat and take my medication at about the same time every day, but I think one of the perks of being over 70 is that I do not have to punch a clock, and I am not going to to try to regulate my life nor ask for medication to complicate it. I hope you have similar freedom and can enjoy it. If so, relax and enjoy being SILVER.

Dear Buncolady61: If and when I solve my sleeping problem (one good night's sleep...then next night: 2 hrs sleep, up an hr., back to sleep for 2 hrs., up an hr. and this goes on several times a week), I'll be happy to share the news. I've tried hot tea, aspirin with PM to aid sleeping...doesn't help.

My biggest problem is night time eating! Get home from work about 6 p.m. Have dinner then crash. Usually about 10pm I have to snack on something or can't sleep. I've tried hot tea rather than eating something. Sometimes it helps..other times it doesn't. Also getting into a regular exercise program. I kinda hit and miss on this area.
