Just checking in before I watch some TV. Didn't do much today, felt kinda nice for a change. Tomorrow is another story, washing clothes, drusing, etc. I try to go to the "Y" for class on Tues and Fri. I have to just push myself to get out the door. I have some CD's on walking with Lesle that I like to do in the cool of the house. It is just too hot to walk here in sunny Florida. Soon it will be getting cooler.

Pray that everyone has a great evening, and a wonderful week ahead.

Haven't made it to the pool yet but I have been walking three to five miles per day. Need to keep better track of the calories. Will just keep plugging along.
Hope everyone has a nice day!

Welcome to the team.. You have to keep yourself motivated and get to the pool. I know the feeling. I started out where I could not wait to get too the Y.. Now I just have to keep telling myself that I need and want to go too the Y. It does not always work.. Seems the devil on my shoulder keeps saying in my ear..NAH.. NOT TODAY.. I have to stop listening I think.. Keep posting.. You can do this. Have a wonderful day.. Hugs, Carol

Hello Everyone!
When I saw the Silver Sneakers Team, I instantly joined. I belong to Silver Sneakers in Wisconsin.
Our Fitness Center is fairly new and SS is starting it's third weekly class. We'll have 2 Muscular Strength Classes and one Cardio Circuit Class. We're hoping that a second Cardio Class will be introduced soon then we'll be able to have 4 structured classes per week.
A little about me: Wisconsin, married 40 years, 67 year old and back to being obese.
I know it's not nice to join and then not post but we are going to visit our daughter on Friday so I'll check in tomorrow before we leave.
I hope to become aquainted with all of you.

I am new to this Team. I signed up for Silver Sneakers in July. Needless to say I only went twice. I felt I just did not fit in. WRONG. I did use the pool at the Y but that was it. I know that I have to get up each and every day and use the machines and the pool at the YWCA. Need to get back into the OLE SILVER SNEAKERS. You sure motivated me to get moving again. Thanks.

Have a wonderful evening.

Hi, Caroll3. Welcome. Silver Sneakers in an exercise program for seniors. I think it is in many parts of the nation if not nationwide. I get it free from my HMO. Many HMOs sponser it. I just took the name because it was catchy and I wanted to attract seniors, and if some members of the exercise program were members of Sparkpeople, they might join our team. But you don't have to belong to the exercise program to belong to our team.

Hi Loper, I hope you are having some success with weight loss. It seems every ounce we lose is a challenge these days. I enjoy gardening and have expending calories at least an hour a day out in the gardens this week. So much to do to get the gardens in shape again. Time to plant the veggie plants too.

Everyone, have a great weekend, add 5 minutes to whatever exercise you choose to do. You will feel better for it and know you have done something good for you.

Shirley, you are among friends and this is a place for you to vent when needed. Of course you do not wish to vent at your mom.

Have a good day! I'm off to ride down to the Dr. with hubby. It is a routine checkup but have some other errands to run while in town. Take advantage with gas prices going up, up.....

I'm trying to eat healthy too. I make healthy foods, but my mother is set in her ways and is syuspicious of anything low calorie. She likes white rice. I cook with brown, so I have to cook my foods separately. She won't eat a meal she suspects is low calorie and will eat raisin toast or a bowl of rice with sugar and cinnamon and call it a meal. I try to help her eat more healthy. That's why I came to live with her, to help.

Sorry, I have to let out the pressure that builds up. I don't want to upset mother, but I need to let off steam sometimes. emoticon

Mary Joyce, eating changes are inevitable for us, I'm sure. We are changing every week, to more fruits and veggies and whole grains. There are times we slip, but do try to do our best to accomodate needing less.

John developed diabetes2 several years ago, so we even cut out some of the staples we used to have in our diet, like white rice and white potatoes. A few of the vegetables he always loved are served only occasionally now.

I thought I would miss the cookies, cakes, etc. but once we got used to having alternatives I don't miss them at all. I did have a slice of birthday cake recently at GGD's birthday, but found myself leaving all that gooey frosting.

Have a good day everybody!!!

Thanks, Gardengazer, for your support. I think it's more difficult for my husband than myself...He misses that meat-potato and gravy meal. I now try to fix nutritional meals, but I'm not sure what HE calls them....ha. He misses the hot rolls and deserts (so do I, but I know the consequences...)

No, They didn.t have it when I lived there. I joined my mother's HMO and they just added the progran a little over 2 years ago. I can't get her to go. I think it would be good for her. You can do all the exercises sitting down if you want to. We do as much on our feet as we can and sit down when it gets too much. My step-sister lives in the next block and we meet to walk almost every day. We wald for about 1/2 hour, picking a different street every day. I have been walking for uyears. I walked the trail that was an old railroad right of way whoch was paved over for walking. It was a 2 mile course throughtttthe center of town. I used to do 4 miles aa day then. Then when my husband got alzeimer's and felt insecue, I built a trail in my back yard. Our house was on a woodsy slope, and I built stairs by setting in cement blocks at the steepest part of it, and cleared the brush. I timed myself when I walked it ane I made 5 circuits in 20 minutes. So I estimateed it was 1/5 of a mile per lap. I felt good about that and walked every day until one day I came upon a large snake lying across the path. I never walked it again. Thee is a park and airport nearby and I'd like to walk around it some day. I hear it is 7 1/5 miles around and often see people walking, running and skating on it. One of therwse days!!!

This message is for all new members/joiners. I, too, was overwhelmed with the amount of members in some of the groups and when I spotted this one I immediately responded.... I am 75 and my husband is 77. In the summer he is extremely active keeping up with the yard and his GARDEN which he loves doing)... I have been dealing with sciata for about 4 years so I haven't been able to exercise without extreme pain. My last visit with the chiropractor was about a year ago, and in January I was able to get back to my treadmill, altho it was quite uncomfortable for the first 3 weeks I kept on the program and have managed to lose 16 pounds. God has been good in the healing process.

I am looking forward to joing in and sharing our daily struggles...

Hi Tenngramm,

Let me say I'm glad you started this. Perhaps we can do something with it.

I checked your sparkpage. That is a wonderful picture of you and your Mom.

Do you go to SS now or did you go back in TN? We have one 82 year old gentleman in our group. He and his wife live on the lake and usually walk to the college for our classes. I am 70 and my hubby is 71. We have 5 children, 10 grand children and 3 great grands at this point.

Are you walking every day? We try to, and have some resistance bands and hand weights here at home to use.

Have a wonderful Easter weekend!

Marcie

It's all my fault. I ;joined Sparkpeople about 2 weeks ago and was checking out the teams. The one for those over 50 was so populous, that I was getting dozens of e-mail messages that I thought I'd try one more exclusive,(older people) I'm 81 myself. But there wasn't one for my age group. I started it thinking I could learn as I went along. I didn't know where to start. I chose the name because I belong to Silver Sneakers. I love it.
Hope this can be a success, but I need help from other members. I just don't know what I'm doing. doing. emoticon emoticon

emoticon emoticon Welcome to you Carroll! Yes there is a national organization of Silver Sneakers, open to those 65 and older. Many cities and towns have groups and once you belong you can go to silver sneakers in other places than your home group.

I thought maybe this was a group of people that belonged to the national group through their local one. It obviously is not that, so could be whatever we should decide to make it, I guess.

I am sorry for your current back problem. I see you have been doing exercises prescribed in physical therapy. All your walking today seems to have been a little too much. I know it is hard not to do all the things you used to do. You do need to allow the back to heal though, so try to stick with your prescribed plan.

Have you had a chance to browse the articles? There are some good ones!

Maybe if we keep this forum going, we will get some new participating members.

Have a good evening!

Marcie

Hi, I signed up for this site last week, and thought the 'Silver Sneakers" sounded like a fun place to start. I've gotten notices on my email that others have signed on, as there just seemed to be a couple at first who are members of this message board. Only, I'm not sure how to get messages going back and forth.. (Did that make sense).. I just came in from a long day of walking and shopping.. My back hurts, and I must lay down a while..
Three months ago I was healthy and strong (of course overweight).. Then, I had a serious back problem develop, and am having to curtail most energetic activity.. I've finished two months of Physical Therapy, and can do those exercises I learned that will help and not hurt this back.. I am not sure if I have heard of 'Silver Sneakers' before now. Is there a national organization, of Seniors in this club, other than Spark TEam?
