Sorry to hear BUMBLEBEE_RN. The facility I work at has the management make the call of whether to call in staff as the census rises or not. I do not know your furstration, but nost definately hear what you are saying.

LILYPUDGE-Great to hear you have steady work. I have tried to get into telephonic case management, but it seems that most of the jobs in my area also include home visits, so it is incompatible with my allergies to pets, pollens & molds.

I am doing okay. Trying to steer a little further away from the carbs that I have been loading up on lately. Everyone seems to have brought their leftover Holloween candy with them to work. I have also been eating alot of day old donuts. Got to get away from those things.

I am a little disappointed that I didn't get my first request for vacation. I was hoping to have the week I was starting allergy shots to be off, so that I could work through any adverse effect of the most aggressive round of shots. Oh well, asked for the next week off & I will make sure that I schedule myself off the night before and the night after I am to have the shots.

I hope all is having a happy & healthy journey in life.

Blessings,
Amanda, RN

The hospital where I was working -- offered low census days fairly often. However, because I was management -- I was not eligible. It was also cheaper to have management work the hours instead of calling back the regular staff. Ugh.

I am currently considering a position at a much larger facility. They cannot mandate you to work over your scheduled hours. And, I wouldn't be management. Blessing!

Working much mandatory overtime can really wear a person out. Make sure that you continue to take care of yourself.

I have been lucky having enough vacation to cover those days. The rules have changed and I cannot accrue as much vacation or sick leave as I did and that becomes a bit more of a problem. Right now, however, we have a severe shortage of nurses (my hospital isn't paying enough) and there are mandatory overtime days.

Love the money but hate working extra.

I guess I'm hard to please.

I try to look at low census days as hidden treasures - Free days I have not already booked solid. It is when days become weeks it gets more to be more like a challenge.

There are days I wish the urban hospital I work at would have low census days. (They do occur around holidays at times.) I am glad you are staying busy. I want to extend you my support as you face the challenge of a reduced income. (I was without work & had very little savings for 4 months, so I kind of get your situation.)

It has been a while since I posted here.
Getting ALOT of low census days at work. Trying to keep busy so I don't stress about loss of income. We have been getting firewood in mornings and I walk about 3 miles in the evenings .
Just trying to stay positive.

Thanks for the good wishes on the interview. It seemed to go well. The job fair seems like it may lead to some good interviews later. The people I interviewed with today didn't have a position for me but promised to pass my resume along to msnagers who could use my experience. Another interview on Monday and Wednesday.

Congratulations on such a great inspection. Sorry to hear about the challenges the organizatoon, staff, &yourself are experiencing.

I have long said that the customer is not always right, but we do need to take the time to listen to them & realize that they know their bodies best. (I know I have trouble getting this across to other health care providers when I am the patient. Could have eaved myself 3 weeks of time waiting for a kidney stone to pass whicg wasn't going to happen if they'd have just listened to the customer.) In today's world we need to be proving evidence based care, not just what the customer requests.

Inspection went well and we passed easily. In fact, the inspectors said they had to look for "problems." It was on my days off which was a double blessing.

Read an article about how the "customer isn't always right" and it is important for management to back their employees. It improves morale and customer service as well as employee morale.

We are hemorrhaging nurses. Quitting 2 and 3 at a time and this is a small hospital. CNO needs to retire. Corporate needs to back off a little. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians. Mandatory overtime is causing a lot of them to leave and with the loss of staff I see that coming back.

It won't get better any time soon. A lot of changes need to be made at other levels than the bottom.

It's always hard trying to keep management and customers satisfied along with yourself. Not easy. Best of luck. I just need some more sleep.

It's been nuts at work. Certifying inspectors are due any day so the micromanaging and cleaning is amazing. Getting "nastygrams" from boss daily about things we aren't doing well and how awful everyone is.

Yesterday had a total of 9 patients--7 at one time and one was a fresh post op. Of course the less time intensive things don't get done. Still got out two hours late. Hate days like that and expect the email this morning so I can hear how badly I did.

Hope the inspection goes well and on my day off.
