I'm a little confused. I went to the first post on this thread to read about what you all are doing and there was a mention of calipers and bodyfat scales. But, body fat and a BMI measurement are not the same thing, right?

Goal 29.71 on September 30

Actual 29.72

I dipped below my goal earlier in the month, but whether it's water weight or increased muscle, I'm not there today. Ah well, so close is pretty good.

Raylinstephens, WOW! Way to do some exercise, looks like you've taken the lead again this week.

leapard, very good advise, and i am going to see a chiropractor.

kristi, don't sweat it, September was a bad month for me, but at least i'm maintaining. You'll be back on track tomorrow. You know the drill, start with some exercise, good breakfast, remember to log EVERYTHING, and you'll lose those lbs in no time!

YANKYKITTEN get to a chiropractor. You have whiplash. A chiro will make you feel better immediately. You may need 1 or 2 follow up appts but you will feel immediate results.

Sorry I've been inactive all week, but I was in a car accident (young man rear ended me) and my neck is too sore to stay looking at the computer screen.

I will announce this week's winner as soon as I can.

Well, I am still 25.1. Good, because I am not gaining. But bad, because not losing either!

869 minutes of walking

I don't work so I walk 90+ minutes most mornings. I try for 5 miles and 10000 aerobic steps because it is the best time for me to walk.

I haven't been able to exercise as much as I have wanted to lately. Things have been so crazy! I'm trying to get my son out of his autism, so that takes a lot of time. With going to group once a week and having 2 therapists coming over once a week, it's pretty hectic.

You know, walking is all I've done to lower my BMI from 46% to 30%, so it certainly can be effective in lowering your BMI. I think the key to it though, is you do have to do it almost everyday, unless you incorporate other activities as well.

Well, busymom and reneemitt, you both did better than I did last week. I did nothing! So, I'm walking today.

Hi everyone! I have to say I've gotten a rough start to this challenge. I didn't get a strong start to this challenge at all - did some walking so that helped some, but I'm sure I didn't make enough of an impact this first week to make a change. This week though is a new week, so we will see what good I can do!

OK...I read this challenge the other day but wasn't a member of the team yet and had to run off to work...

My starting BMI: 38.2

I had physical therapy on Tuesday - when I go I work really hard for 1.5 hours - strength training. Yesterday I went to the gym: rode a bike for 30 minutes, walked two laps, then walked a treadmill for another 30 minutes.

One more thing I am doing to accomplish my goal: I "graduated" physical therapy this week. I had the therapist write a note describing what I can and cannot do so I can go back to working with a personal trainer. I gave him the note last night and he is supposed to call me to discuss and set up our twice weekly appointments.

Glad to have you! Great start everyone! Remember, let's try to post the type of exercises that we've been doing weekly ... only if you want to share... but you still have to post weekly, even if it's just to say hi! that way we can all learn from each other's successes, large and small!

I've been kicking around a couple of ideas for prizes... but I've been sick... and I do mean SICK, not eating, not out of bed since Monday... I've been doing my best to still say hello to everyone, so if I've missed someone, PLEASE forgive me.

What kinda prizes would motivate you? Suggestions are welcome... but try some small and some large because I want to do weekly prizes as well. They are all given with Sparkgoodie Points of my own, so be realistic when you look at how many points I have... plus, my husband has sucked up a lot of points too...

If someone has another catagory to win a prize, that would be great to share with us as well... After all.. it's YOUR TEAM! Woohooo! LET's GET GOING!

Awesome! I think the weekly prizes will be given out on Sundays... that way, people can use their fitness tracker to track how many minutes they've done for the week/ and strength training, and just post sometime on Saturdays.

Is everyone ok with that?

I'm in. My BMI is 23.7 today. I've been in the desirable range for a while. I'd like to get it down to 20. I'm dropping about a point per month.

Sept. 1: BMI 30.8
(just goes to show you that even though I'm in a size 6, how unhealthy you can be if you have a small frame like I do)

I'd like everyone to know that my goal is to be at or below 28% by the end of September. I've lowered it from 46% since last October, so I know I can do this with everyone's help.

Because this idea received a good response, the team leader, Kristi, thought it should be the September challenge: Here is a copy of the email that was sent to everyone:

Hello Team!
Are you ready to lower your BMI? That is what September will be about, with the LET’S LOWER OUR BMI CHALLENGE!. While we work towards our goals this September, it is the hope that we will get to know each other better, support each other, and lower our BMI! This challenge is one that EVERYONE at ALL FITNESS LEVELS CAN DO! So let’s band together, make this the best challenge ever, and lower our BMI!

First, let’s get the preliminaries out of the way. Because some people have already posted their starting BMI on one thread, it’s probably in everyone’s best interest to keep the challenge on that thread. The URL for that is:

www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/team_mes
sa
geboard_thread.asp?board=0x9812x1801R>4020

The Rules are:
1. You must post your starting BMI some day during the first week of September.
2. You must post, at least once a week on the thread, what you are doing to accomplish your goal of lowering your BMI. This way, we can all learn what is, and is not, working to help us on our goals. It also creates team camaraderie and enables us to support each other.
3. You must post your ending BMI within 24 hours of the last day of September.
4. You must measure your starting and ending BMI with the same method.

You can measure your BMI several different ways, and the choice is yours. A great site was posted by our leader, Kristi, a while back, but here is the URL again:

www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

However, it should be noted that this method might not be that accurate for those that are very muscular or have a small or large frame. For example, if you take your thumb and middle finger and wrap it around your wrist, if it overlaps, you have a small frame and the height and weight measurement calculation will be too low for your frame. If they don’t touch, then that measurement will be too high. So other methods to measure your BMI are:

1. A Body-Fat Caliper: These are fairly cheap, accurate if used properly, and can be picked up in most athletic stores.
2. A scale that measures body-fat: These vary in accuracy, however, if you use the same one from the beginning of the month to the end of the month, it will measure your difference accurately. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THESE CAREFULLY, AS YOUR BMI WILL CHANGE DEPENDING ON HOW HYDRATED YOU ARE.
3. Body-Fat Measuring Machines: These are expensive but accurate. They are available at some gyms and sometimes you don’t have to belong to the gym to actually schedule a body fat reading. Some places let you buy a package of several measurements, which is less expensive, and they let you split it with another person.

What would a challenge be without a little EXTRA incentive? Spark Goodies will be given to the top performers:
1. A Grand Prize and Runner-Up prize will be given to those that are able to lower their BMI the most. Depending on how many challengers we have, there might be more placement prizes.
2. A prize will be given every week for the person who puts in the most fitness minutes and scores the most strength training points. We will use the Sparkpeople fitness tracker and there will be a limit of 24 a day for cardio minutes and 10 a day for strength training… which means that there can be ties EVERY WEEK!

Again, this is a challenge that EVERYONE at ALL FITNESS LEVELS can do! So let’s band together and make this the best challenge ever!

What I'm going to do is try to contact other team members and let them know about it. I also have a lot of points to buy goodies with, so at that end of the challenge I'll give top performers goodies. Maybe I could give other prizes for other catagories... like if someone did something new or challenged themself in a new way... I'll try to think of other things... and maybe some people who read this will give suggestions. Even if it is just the three of us, I'll post another thread where we can keep track of the challenge.

Does that work for everyone?

I was wondering if we could start a team challenge for September? I was thinking along the lines of everyone trying to lower their BMI by 1 percentage point. We could have everyone posting at the beginning of September what their starting BMI is. Then once a week posting what their exercise program was during the week... then at the end of September we could have another BMI measurement. The calipers are fairly cheap and easy to use.

What does everyone think?

Because this idea received a good response, the team leader, Kristi, thought it should be the September challenge: Here is a copy of the email that was sent to everyone:
