Thank you so much Sarah!!! I am going to print out your advice :-) I think I will face away too. When Chalene teaches us she is a mirror image, but she also seems to use the oposite - ie. when she says go right she in on her left and calls it her right to make it easier for those watching the video. But in class it would be opposite to the class and I have been confused as a student in the class before when the instructor did mirror imaging. So I will follow your advice and face away. Thanks!! I don't have mirrors in class either. I won't be teaching for a month or so. I bought the toolbox so I have 29, 30, 31, 101 and then the 34 that we did in class. I think I will practice 31 - do you think that would be a good beginner class with modification?

Thanks again for all your advice. Training with Mindy would be so much fun!! She is my favorite on the videos.
I will also check out the Turbo Fanatics group on Yahoo :-)

Have a great Sunday!!

Hi Ana,

How soon are you going to begin teaching? When I began teaching I started with a round rather than Turbo 101, for much the same reason as you metioned. What I did was at the beginnig of the first class, I reviewed the 4 basic punches and kicks, the guard position and some of the signature Turbo moves. I thought that I what I had planned was very basic but ended up simpifying it even further. I previewed any unsual moves before I began the section. When it comes to the Turbo, I stop the music and talk them through the moves while I do it. Then we do the Turbo once, bring the heartrate down and then do it again. I usually wait a couple of weeks to add the finese in but I pretty much always do legs and abs in every class. I think I reviewed the basics at the beginning of each class for the first few classes and then if there were any new people.

It does get easier to memorize the rounds. What works best for me is to I practice with the DVD for a little while and then create my own choreography notes and practice with the CD. It through me off a bit at first because the music wasn't the same but you do get used to that as well.

The Turbo Fanatics group on yahoo has a great deal of advice for new instructors plus there are flyers and other resources.

I was blessed that I was able to go to All Star Instructor Training with Mindy before I had my first class. Here are some highlights from that class.

1) When you are practicing at home, cue out loud and begin on the 5th count of the 8. So, when you're counting the music...1,2,3,4,now you start to cue. That was a big "aha" for me when I went to that training. There is a cueology CD available through the Turbo Kick website that focuses on hearing the counts in the music and when to cue.
2) Go in to class with the attitude that everyone there really likes you. Believe it or not, it will really help.
3) Plan to be a little bit "over the top". This is a chance to be loud and boisterous, even if that isn't your personality. Be larger than life and pay attention to all the details of your appearance.
4) Be early to arrive and plan to stay a little bit after class to talk to the participants.
5) MOST IMPORTANTLY...have fun, laugh at your mistakes and don't spend time apologizing. Most of the people will not even realize when you mess up.

Will you have mirrors in the room you are teaching? I didn't but I still faced away from the class most of the time. I faced them for the warm-up and cool down at first. I faced away the rest of the time and just looked back at them through out the class. If you have mirrors, this won't be much of an issue. I find that it is confusing to people new to Turbo Kick when you face them. Of course, every group is different. It did make it easier for me in the beginning to face away, though. :)

I hope this helps!

Sarah

Hello everyone!!

Hello Sarah!! You are on the Turbojammer's team too :-)

I just took the cert. class last Saturday - I am sure I passed, but we have to wait the 4-6 weeks for the "official" results :-)

Question to all you pros :-) I am going to teach at the fitness center at my work and I don't know if I should start very basic - Turbo 101 or just dive into a more advanced round like 31? Although I have been doing Turbo Jam for over 2 1/2 years, I am finding it hard to memorize these rounds and I just want to memorize one for the first class :-)

We got certified on round 34 and I think it is too complicated for a beginner's class - even with the basic layers!

Any advice you can give me would help :-) I can't take the trainer's workshop at this time and have never teached a class...so I am feeling a little scared :-D

Thanks everyone!!!!

Ana

I'm debating buying it, but I don't know when I will ever introduce it to any of my classes. I think I'm just gonna try to add more layers onto Rd. 32 for now, and wait for 33 to come out.

Turbo Sport is very similar to Turbo Kick, just take out the dancing and add more sporty moves. It even has a push-ups section! The set-up is as follows:

Warm-up
Punches
Kicks
P&K
Turbo
Recovery
Finale #1
Finale #2
Legs
Push-Ups
Abs
Cool Down

So as you can see, there is no finesse since that is mostly dance-type moves. It's so intense though. I was so intimidated to do it, and the push-up section kicked my butt!!! It's a great workout though. I highly recommend it!! It's different than a regular TK round but not so different that you don't feel like you are doing TK anymore.

I'm not an instructor, but I love Turbo Jam and Turbo Kick. I feel the best rounds were 14 through 27. Because of changes in the music laws, they had to dump them so I was lucky to get a lot of them off of Ebay. My favorites are probably 26 and 27.

I've heard that Turbo Sport is a lot like Turbo Kick, but I'm going on hearsay.

Hey Ladies,

Did any of you buy the Turbo Sport round? I forgot about pre-ordering it with my VIP code (Which by the way, I could not figure out what the heck it was?) but I see that it is out yet, I kind of want to buy it to mix up my classes, but just wondering if anyone has seen it yet and what do you think?

How are your classes going? I have been teaching A LOT! I taught 5 days in a row, 3 turbo kick classes and I am beat. My class is starting to pick up a little bit so I am glad!

Yeah, It's sad that they are a little pricey. I have some shorts and I love them! I also have some of the slim fit capri's....I don't care for them as much. I guess they are too binding for me! I will probably wait until April, I'm going to HHH workshop then...so they will be a little cheaper!

Hey Sarah, my friends class went pretty well. Everyone is ALL new to it so they are a lot more forgiving if you mess up! I think I have mostly all the basic stuff and some of the advanced layers memorized so I'm going to teach it on Wednesday! I have another friend who may teach it today after my boot camp class so I may stick around if he does. Listening to it in the car and cueing to myself really helps me learn it so I'm not so tongue twisted later!

Tiara - I LOVE the pants! I'm pretty short though so I will probably have to hem them, but I think they have ties on the bottom so that helps. I have a pair of olive nike pants that are similar. However, one of my new years resolutions was to save money .. so I told myself if and when I get down to 125 I'll buy myself maybe the red pair, and maybe a pair of the capris. I like the shorts but my strings started ripping after one wear =(

Tiara - I really would like to get some of the Hip Hop Pants, but I'm not sure that it is in my budget right now. I'm going to a Rnd 32 workshop on 3/2 and I'll probably try them on there and see what I think.

Sarah- You will love teaching round 31! I liked it a lot. I think you just need to get the feel for your class, everyone teaches differently...I think it is just whatever works for you and your group. Good luck in it though! I have been teaching for a year next month and it just gets more fun with every class.

I never did teach BOV4...I recieved it, but just kept it for myself. Is anyone currently teaching HHH? I just started it two weeks ago and I'm wondering how your classes are responding. I was also wondering if anyone has ordered the Hip Hop Pants? They look so cute...but, I don't work out well in pants...I love the shorts!!

I am not an instructor but I am TK certified. I love round 32!! I've done it twice since getting it on Thursday night after work, and I think it's a great workout. I'm happy to see more kicks, they make me feel so powerful. When I got certified, the instructor taught round 31 and that so far is my favorite. I love that music the best, but that might just be what happens - You grow fondest of the one you learned first! I love Turbo Jam and Turbo Kick. I get so excited when I get my new round!!

You are all right, BO4 is very long. It definitely kicks my butt and I like that!

You could do that, but it is about around $170 to get certified and each round is $55, so I'm not sure if that would be very reasonable cost wise if you are not planning on teaching.

My friend is going to try to teach up through the turbo on Sunday, so we will probably try to practice it tomorrow!

Mary - Congratulations on your upcoming wedding!! I'm sure you have lots of planning and work to do over this next year. ASIT was fantastic!! It was a tremendous opportunity to be able to spend more than 2 days with a group of people with diverse backgrounds and experience as well as being with a presenter that has such great experience. We spent time talking and working out together as well practicing cueing, critiquing and supporting each other. The curriculm is good has valuable information. I went the weekend before I began teaching and it was so helpful in giving me the confidence to go out and begin teaching. One of the other ladies that was there has been teaching for over 20 years and she too found the weekend a tremendous value to her by helping her take it to the next level. She said her classes immediately noticed a new vitality. ASIT was invaluable to me and I would recommend it to ANYONE who is teaching, going to be teaching, or even thinking about teaching. It was all about making us better instructors and people!

Gina - The rounds are $55 each however if you sign up as a VIP, which is free, you get a 20% discount. When you sign up for VIP you are agreeing to an automatic shipment of the round charged to the credit card you give them. There is also VIP for PiYo and HHH.

Hi Sarah- I actually am not teaching now. I got certified in Nov. 06 and did a few classes at my office gym, but work got hectic and I then I got engaged and am getting married this Dec, so life has been getting in the way. I'm hoping to get back to teaching at work and maybe get on with the city Rec center sometime this year.

I so LOVE Rd 31. It's one of my faves and it was easy to learn. It usually takes me 3-4 times doing the round until I've got most of the choreography down. Now, I'm keeping my memorization fresh and working on cuing so I'm good once I start teaching again.

I saw on your page you went to the All Star training, how was it?

Just finished doing Round 32 for the first time! It is great!! I did it with the dvd so not the real music but I really like it. The abs and legs section are tough! I'm still thinking I will start Rnd 31 on Monday, because I pretty well have that choreography down and I want to do justice to 32 when I introduce it.

TIARA and Tina - I love RND 28. It is so similar to one of the TJ videos that it felt the most comfortable for me to teach as my first round. I actually certified on 31 and will probably begin teaching it for the first time on Monday.

I've only been teaching for 4 weeks so, I'm not sure that switching is going to work or not. Most of my participants have seen RND 28 at least 2X a week for the last 4 weeks and as I said I have a new session with the potential of many new people (I currently have 6) beginning on Monday. Although I haven't added all the layers on yet, I don't believe that I it will last another 4 weeks without getting boring for them. So, the switch in sessions seems like a natural break plus all the new people will be on similar footing with the "old" people because the choreo will be new to all of them. What do you think, does that make sense?

At my certification, I purchased the tool box. So, I currently have Rnds 28, 29, 30, 31, & 32. Even if I made it through all of these rounds before the next one came out, I could begin repeating at that point and keep it fresh, I think.

Any of you, feel free to give me your opinion on my plan. As I said, I'm new to this and just kindof feeling my way along, so to speak!

Sarah- How do you switch rounds every four weeks? Do you just stay a little behind the time that they are released? Just wondering what you do because the rounds aren't released that often.

I think it also depends on your class. They are the only ones that can tell you when they feel comfortable enough to move on...or if they are happy where they are. I really try to listen to them, and maintain a happy medium for all members. I also start the rounds out very basic, sometimes even more basic than Chalene does...(such as holding one move for a few extra counts) and then advance the moves as they get more comfortable. I like to ease them into it. It can be a little overwhelming! It also introduces new moves and keeps it interesting.

Stacy - If you are interested, DO IT! Don't fall into the trap of feeling that you have to look a particular way or that your body has to be just the way you want it. I think that people gain so much inspiration and motivation from seeing other people achieve and change. You may not be thinking that you have to be perfect, but I procrastinated going to certification because I thought my appearance wasn't what it should be to be a fitness instructor. I am so glad that I overcame those thoughts and just did it!

Mary - How long have you been teaching? How long does it usually take you to get a round down before you begin teaching it?

Sarah - The only other thing about the video is that Chalene does one side basic and the other advanced. So if you're following what you see, you'll be uneven. You could for sure learn the choreo and then do it to the music or mute the sound like TIARA mentioned! Certification was such a great experience! It is well worth it!

Wow! Great to hear from other people who LOVE this as much as I do!

SVHICKS- I agree 32 will be really fun even though it is challenging. I also have been listening to the music today! It is sad when getting a new round is like Christmas! I have been teaching my class 31 for about 4 months now....or shortly after it came out. We got a little tired of it, so I started them on Round 28...which is my absolute favorite!! Just for a little change. It's nice to bring back those old rounds. We have been doing HHH 1 night a week, and we just started it 2 weeks ago. It is alot of fun! I have such a diversified group...but, they all love it. I am not Piyo certified yet, but I am planning on going in April! Can't wait. Hope it gives me a little more flexibility.

SARAHA71- I am certain you will be able to follow the instructor DVD's. There are 2 different ways to watch. She will break it down in the preview section, and then there is the class section. She usually shows the advanced moves in the class, but in the preview she will give you several different options. I think the only problem you might come to is that the real music is not on the instructor DVD....the music is seperate..(since it is for a live class). They had some copyright issues or something with the music....not sure. But, you could always mute the TV and crank the stereo!!! emoticon

I had posted earlier about this question. I took turbokick for two years 2x a week, and the turbojams are fun but not as challenging as the classes.I am looking into becoming certified just so I can purchase the rounds for myself, not to teach. (Right now I'm working out at home, not in a gym)

The Videos: Are they in a class format, so I can just follow (like turbo jam) or does she stop alot and show how the advanced moves are to be done. Basically, does it flow like a class or is it more of an instructional demo?

When you teach 3x a week, how long do you do one round? six weeks? a month?

Thanks,

Sarah (too!)

Hi TIARA! I've only been teaching for about a month but in my opinion it does look like it is going to be a bit challenging, but SO fun!! I received it yesterday and I haven't had a chance to actually do it yet, just viewed the preview and part of the workout. I'm carrying the music with me today to listen to as I'm out and about! I'm going to try to do RND 32 at home today and see how it goes. I am planning to start a new round on Monday, not sure I can learn it by then. I was planning to start RND 31.

I haven't been to a Hip Hop Hustle workshop yet but I went through All-Star Instructor Training last month and Mindy has us do a bit of HHH. I loved it! It is definitely not the kind of dancing I am accustomed to but I had so much fun! Are you teaching HHH? I'm hoping to get to a workshop by the Fall, if not HHH, then I may try to certify on PiYo. Are you PiYo certified too?

HANLAID - Turbo Kick, as you may know, is the live version of Turbo Jam. If you get certified to teach Turbo Kick then you can buy TK Rounds, which include the choreography, music, and a video of 1 hour workout. These are our instructor tools to be able to teach Turbo Kick.

Looking forward to hearing from others!

Sarah
