Living with my Dad, who has had 7 heart attacks and every artery has stints on it, he always goes or calls the doctor with each symptom he has. Never ignore your body. Your body is letting you know that something is wrong and we must never ignore it. When you start any exercise or diet, your Doctor's will tell you what is best for you. Never begin anything that may be harmful to your heart.

Hoping everyone has a hearty day,

Laura

OISIN_91 First & most importantly you should speak with your doctor especially about your symptoms and exercise.

Spark has an entire section devoted to heart health that may help you.

Hi all.
As a 21 year old male living with CHD(congenital heart disease) I thought that this would probably be the best place to ask for advice. Does anybody get any symptoms of their Heart disease e.g. heartburn or uncomfortable feeling around the chest, along with shortness of breath on a regular basis and a lot of palpitations, or does this mean that my condition is worsening? Also what exercises and diet would be recommended for me to try and get back into shape for the forthcoming football season?
Any advice greatly appreciated

I bought Chia Seeds and Hemp Seeds, learned some new recipes and read a bit about the health perks of consuming them. I love the Hemp, it's gotta a nutty flavor, and is great mixed with humus and then spread on a Tortilla with some chicken or red kidney beans the sky's the limit!!

I bought 2 brand new small non stick skillets (good for cooking for one or two). I use them every meal. They don't even get put away; I just put them back on stove. The clean up is fast and easy and I love this

Slow but will get there!

In 2006 I had a heart attack brought on by diabetes that I did not know I had. I would get very hot and then start coughing and throwing up mucus and had hard time breathing. I did this several times over a period of a couple of weeks. One day I was at work and it started happening and I started getting chest pains as well. My bosses wife and son took me to the hospital. I passed out as soon as I laid down on the table. The next day I woke and had a tube down my nose. They said I had had a heart attack and was diabetic. The capillaries are clogged and not able to have surgery to fix it. I really need to get the weight under control but having a hard time with the eating. Exercise and drinking water are a little easier to control.

Back on the treadmill again!! It's too cold and snowy outside to walk, so do it on the treadmill and at the mall.

If we saw all the difference even the tiniest of our prayers make, and all the people those...prayers were destined to affect...we would be so paralyzed with awe...that we would be unable to get up off our knees for the rest of our lives.

Mondays are made for moving. Already I have had to shovel (very light fluffy snow). I did some walking around the field but it was blistering cold so I will do an online video to get some more calories burned today.

Hope you all have a great week.

At the end of the day, be able to look back and say "I did my best today."

Trader Joe's Complete Body Cleanse.
The box says sold and distributed exclusively by Trader Joe's. Okay I'll try and keep posting about it. It also says to not do it more than 4 times a year - to use the change of seasons as a guide. I'm supposed to be eating frequent small meals now and pushing the water. I always feel like I should drink more water than I do.

Alcohol is the most available drug there is. Saying adios to it is do-able! Bravo to all who join me on this journey and stay true to themselves and stick to it.

Today's the first day of a 14 day Complete Body Cleanse that I am trying. I'm mostly doing it for my liver. Cutting out booze in my life is going to lower my blood pressure, too. You're supposed to not drink or eat processed stuff while doing the cleanse. No caffeine even, no artificial sweeteners. So it's a challenge, but I'm game. I bought the kit at Trader Joe's. Today was 4 fiber capsules; tonight will be 4 digestive capsules and 1 liver capsule (and I think more fiber capsules, not sure.) I feel pretty good so far. Can't wait to see the results after the 2 weeks! I'm thinking I'll have a new look when these toxins are out of me.

Alcohol is the most available drug there is. Saying adios to it is do-able! Bravo to all who join me on this journey and stay true to themselves and stick to it.

Way to go Firewife emoticon I have done those myself and been on Chorlesterol medicines for years as well. It is part of my history with heart disease on my family side. My Dad has had 7 heart attacks and everyone of his arteries stinted. And he is still alive, praise God. That is why I make sure I am educated about every medicine, etc. And trying to work off this weight as well. It is hard but you are doing the right thing. Good Luck emoticon

Finally made a cardiology appointment. I have a female doctor and am impressed with her. Right away she ordered an Echo to be done, so I await that result. Also she wants a nuclear stress test and a carotid scan, as well as my fasting cholesterol level. I found her to be very thorough and approachable. The wait time was horrendous though, and she's not the only doctor on duty. I'm glad I chose her, though. I've been on hypertensive and cholesterol meds for years and never had it monitored by a heart doctor, which I always deep down felt was wrong! So I'm getting on the ball with things here, and joining this Team is a part of that, too. Happy New Year.. a new outlook is a great way to start!

Great article. As most of the other women posted - you must advocate for yourself. I've found that cardiology specialists can sometimes have big egos and don't always listen. I now write a list of my questions prior to an appt and also tell the scheduler that I need extra time. We pay a lot between office visit co-pays and insurance, we deserve time for an adequate conversation. And, sometimes, it is up to you to "fire" for physician and seek out one that will meet your needs.

Quitting smoking was very difficult for me. I think I made 9 attempts at it before I finally became smoke free. That was 19 years ago. I had been a smoker for 25 years. But I am so glad I did quit. My husband kept smoking for 10 more years after I quit and now he has COPD and can do very little physical activity because he can't breathe right.

I really hope you will not have too much difficulty in kicking the habit. Just think of the money you will not have to spend for smokes.

At the end of the day, be able to look back and say "I did my best today."

Hang in there, you can do it. Good Luck, it is not easy trying to quit smoking, have a family member trying to do the same thing. emoticon

I will attempt to quit smoking after the holidays, the Dr suggested it. He said it was stressful enough without having this going on to. I am still exercising and watching what I eat. emoticon

Thanks for asking! While we're tackling the issue of heart disease because it's the number-one cause of death in women, much of the advice applies to men too, from how to talk to your primary care doctor to what kinds of foods are best for lowering your risk.

I was simply sweeping the kitchen floor..when I got such a 'heavy' pain in the tops of both arms. It then went up my neck and to the jaw which felt like it was in a vice. I went to my computer and looked up heart attack symptoms in women....and there it was. I had my DH take me to ER and a couple hours later, I had 2 stents put in. Nine months later, I started getting that same 'heavy' pain in my arms and was really tired and always out of breath. Went to Dr., ended up in ER and a few hours later had another stent, right above one I already had.. three days later, I had a mini-stroke.

So, ANY strange feelings or pains that you have....PLEASE go to a doctor or the ER and get checked. Like they told me, if it's nothing..then you are ok, but if it is really serious, you will be where you can get the care you need.

If we saw all the difference even the tiniest of our prayers make, and all the people those...prayers were destined to affect...we would be so paralyzed with awe...that we would be unable to get up off our knees for the rest of our lives.

I too had pain in the jaws when I tried to walk which I was doing for my health....Ironic huh! I also had pain in both arms and I felt as if I were out of my body. Everyone around me seemed like they were talking in a tunnel behind me. It was such a weird feeling. I did that twice before I ended up in the hospital. They did the enzyme tests every 3 hrs for 24 hrs and sent me home. My family Dr. insisted that I have a stress test which I did and my Cardiologist said there was a blip on the test he did not like...he scheduled me for a cath and that is when they found the blockage. The nuclear pictures showed nothing wrong. So if my family Dr. had not pushed this I may not be here today. So ladies please push the issue if you feel something is just not right...the Drs. are beginning to listen to us and our symptoms...they are not in our heads like they used to tell us.

God grant me the patience, knowledge and understanding to do the things I need to do.

@ WOMANSDAYMAG, we have lots of male members who are asking if there will be any articles related to them in the future issues? We certainly don't want them to be left out.

That's a great article in the womens day magazine about womens heart health. I know I made several visits to outpatients and to the family doctor over a 2 year space because of pain in the arm and jaw. It was investigated a bit but nothing developed any more serious than that. I was finally referred to a heart specialist after I had a heart attack. Looking back I wonder if it would have helped if I had been more insistent at the family doctors visits.
Anyway the lesson I learned from this is that women do not present the same symptoms as men do in heart disease. Also I learned that I must be persistent and consistent when I am trying to get help for my health.

Ladies continue asking if you have any questions or doubts about your heart health.

At the end of the day, be able to look back and say "I did my best today."

With my symptoms they sent me for a stress test but nothing showed until they did an nuclear stress test then it showed right away. The problem is the base of the heart, the blood vessels that feed the heart are narrowing, which ends up being a weak heart muscle. I am trying to help the situation with excercise and quitting smoking (which I am having trouble doing). But I am sure I will eventually reach my goals. One day at a time.

RETIREDMAMA3 I did not know that my symtoms were related to my heart either until I ended up in the hospital with a HA. Read, read, read everything you can and find out what your risk factors for heart disease are.

I have been a Womans Day subscriber for years...good articles and they have had a lot of information in them about women and their hearts. Since I found out that I have CAD I read as much as I can about women and the heart....as I found out women do not present the same symptoms as men when they have CAD. I found that Drs. do take women more seriously now than they used to. My Dr. wanted to know all of the symptoms that I presented when I ended up in the hospital and a stent was placed in what is called the "Widow Maker'. He said if I had been a man, I probably would not have come through it. The thing is, I never knew that I was having a problem until it was almost too late.

Ladies, the symptoms are not the same therefore don't be ashamed to go to the Dr or the E.R. when you are having recurring symptoms that just won't go away.

God grant me the patience, knowledge and understanding to do the things I need to do.
