I also take my prescribed meds to help lower cholesterol & blood pressure. None of these were actually needed but after the heart attack and stent they tell me they are standards to take. Would love to drop them, we'll see after my cardio visit next week.

I was most worried about the blood sugar number last October. Our family has a history of adult late in life diabetes and I want to stay away from that.

I just had blood work and an EKG and everything was great. I still take all my meds but everything is in control and my Dr. told me I was doing everything right. This is the first time in a few years that I got a great report.

Got my lab results from the blood work I had done on Tuesday, my serum glucose (blood sugar) went from 139 last October down to 101 now, and total cholesterol level went from 174 down to 136, triglycerides from 90 down to 68!

Glad to see the results I was hoping for! Thank you Sparkpeople & the Healthy Hearts Team!

I agree with IRONBESS. In the last 3 years, there were 2 medications I was taking that were affecting my heart. I FELT it. I knew something was wrong. I told my doctors and they didn't see it. So, I stopped the medications and the symptoms I was having went away. Then, they said "oh, that's interesting." I went online and researched the "rare" side effects of the two medicines and they mentioned tachycardia. Glad I listened to myself.

I am not saying I will do that with all my medications but I learned that listening to me is important.

Asked my cardiologist. He was no help. Said, "Is there an aspirin controversy?" That surprised me because he's a pretty sharp guy. I did a little reading and it sounds like it's a risk vs. benefit deal. My internist thinks I should be on warfarin, not just aspirin. Cardio never has recommended warfarin. Even the docs can't agree. You've got to look out for yourself it seems.

I'm not sure what to make of the aspirin. I was told to take 81 mg daily when I was first dx'd with cardiomyopathy that later found to be idiopathic and not related to vessel disease or heart attack. After a couple years, I noticed my gums started bleeding more and more every time I brushed my teeth. My dentist commented on the bleeding a few times too. Then my brother-in-law, a retired physician, told my husband he doesn't take baby aspirin daily because of the possibility it increases risk of stroke, at least in men. I imagined little vessels in my brain bleeding like my gums. I decided to cut back to every other day. No more bleeding gums. My internist said technically I don't need to take aspirin but she thinks it's a good idea. She's very by-the-book and usually aggressive in her treatment. With the new information about how men and women can respond differently to the same medication, I'm not sure anyone really knows. I'm seeing my cardiologist soon and will try to remember to ask his thoughts on it.

I am rescheduling my stress test. emoticon I have been off of my program for months and I want to get back on track before I see my Dr. again. I will move it to Feb. and commit to daily exercise and healthful eating. emoticon emoticon

I am not taking 2 of my original meds because my ins. wont cover them. emoticon I think I am doing OK with out them. If I stay on track I think I can stop the other 2 also. But I will check with my Doc first.

I am reading controversy about daily low dose aspirin. That it increases the risk of stroke and that it may do more harm than good for heart patients. Any thoughts?

Hi there - update on my concerns over heart surgery: I just got another e-mail from Sunnybrook Hospital. They didn't book a follow-up appt. to save my heart the stress of extra travel (mentioning that in the original e-mail would have been helpful, lol.) Both Drs. did get together and decided that the new innovative Clip Procedure (without open heart surgery) is indeed the best option for me (again, mentioning they were in agreement would have gone a long way to easing my concerns). The Deputy Head of the Cardiac Division will try and call me on the 15th of Nov. to give further explanations - he's out of country right now. So ... provided there is sufficient donations to the Sunnybrook Foundation to pay for the procedure, I will go into the hospital on 18 Dec. for 2-4 days and have this Clip Procedure which they hope will stop the leak in the Mitral Valve of my heart making it easier for my pre-damaged heart to function. It is my understanding it is this Deputy Head together with the Head of Cardiac Surgery at the Hospital who will perform the Procedure so I should be in good hands. No guarantees on outcome - bit of relief, great relief, or no relief, and not long term solution. It is my hope that if there is relief, my heart function might improve where open heart surgery with a more guaranteed solution might then be viable. We'll see what the Dr. says on the 15th if he is able to call me. I've got my fingers crossed - too bad I'm not flexible enough to cross my toes, lol.

Heat index 105 yesterday, so the yard still needs an up close visit from the mower. The Silver Sneakers instructor at the Y is on vacation, so I may skip class today and mow before it gets hot. I also need to go back to Eyeglass World--they need to redo my glasses or give me my money back!

It's been a lazy day. I prepared the lesson for Tuesday's Bible study, did some rearranging in the pantry, went to the grocery store and bread store. I probably should have mowed, but I didn't; maybe it won't be so hot tomorrow after church.

Stay safe!

At 68, I didn't think I'd be having a son move back, but I think my older son is working up to that. He's been off work--short-term disability--for four months. He just returned to work on Monday and is symptomatic again. He said the company is getting ready to lay off another 400 people, so he figures he'll hang on long enough to get laid off so he can collect unemployment.

I'm really not ready for this. I could use prayer from those of you who do that!

Kansas has moved from drought to drown. At present, we're about .5" from the wettest August on record. It always seems to be feast or famine!!

I have two sons, both live fairly close to me. My older son struggles to keep weight on--how unfair is that!!

I'm new to this message board. I'm Kathy, a retired school teacher, 68--living in Kansas. My dad died with CHF, so I need to make sure that I don't develop issues with my heart. I've never really spent a lot of time thinking/worrying about health issues; however, as I get older, I realize that's not the smartest approach.

Hi Linda,

I am new to this team but not new to SP. I see that you were in Destin, FL for vacation. My Hubby and I live in Jacksonville FL but I absolutely love Destin. Have only been there once but wish we could live there. I also love the Beach. Have been able to get out there this year however, even though we are only about 20 minutes away. Oh well, Nice to know you had a great time.

It's getting hotter here, too. I went for my walk at 8:00am this morning and was sweating buckets by 8:30. Tomorrow I have to get out of here earlier so I can enjoy my walk and not just spend the time wishing it were over. Garage cleaning day if I can get myself started! Hope everyone enjoys their day.

Hope everyone is having a good week. It is hot and humid here so I've been getting up early and working out. This morning I drove over to the lake and walked around it, then came home and did a core workout. This evening if it cools down, I may go back to the lake for another walk. Right now it is just too muggy outside, you step out and it just hits you.

Have a great day!

I walked on the Rock Island trail yesterday because I wanted to try to walk faster and it's the only fairly flat place without traffic around here. My hips were too tight, though, and I wasn't able to push myself as much as I wanted to. I really want to increase my walking speed.

Today's my lawn watering day for me and, since I skipped Saturday's watering, I have to stay home and do a good job of it today. My neighbors put in gravel to save the cost of water for a lawn, but I just can't get myself to do that. That means no outdoor walking because I can't do it after it gets hot out. I'll have to find a video on YouTube.

Hope everyone has a good one!

Yes, I have been tested for inner ear and I saw a specialist but probably should follow up.

I went to church this morning, on this beautiful day. I am trying to eat healthy today after going out to a restaurant for dinner last night.

Wish I could swim again. I miss it but with the ileostomy I don't trust the appliances enough to go in the water. It would be too embarassing to have one leak. Maybe someday I'll get braver. Have you seen someone about your balance problem? Is it inner ear?

I walked this morning in an old neighborhood near down town. I think I might go back to that area and cover more of it tomorrow. The architecture is interesting. Each house is different and all are ornate.

Hope your day goes well!

It looks like a good day. I hope to get back into the pool today. It is very hot but we usually go later in the day when it is not quite so hot. I have been feeling pretty well this week. Although, my usual problem with balance has still been with me.

Linda, I usually leave my strength training to do in the evening in front of TV but anything out of doors I have to do early in the morning because it gets too hot for me later on. On good days I can walk up to 90 minutes without getting too tired, yesterday was just bad because of the smoke (which I later found out wasn't from Black Forest so much as from several other new fires, one just a few miles from me) and my soreness. Our weather forecast includes smoke again today so I'm staying indoors although I wanted to fix the rain gutters today. Thanks for the suggestion though. When it cools off I will try that.

Linda!, Yes, having a live-in diet/exercise partner helps, as long as you don't come to blows over what to eat and what not to eat. lol

I just couldn't get my legs and lungs working in sync for my walk this morning. I did an hour but didn't put in my usual distance, and now my hips are stiffening up. I think my hip problems are from the new work out video I did yesterday while I was washing clothes. And I did smell wood smoke as I was walking. I thought the Black Forest fire was, for all intents and purposes, out, but I guess not.

Looks like we're in for more wind this afternoon. Don't know which is worse, constant high winds or no breeze at all. We seem to get one of the other.

Hope everyone is keeping strong and having a good day. :~)

Today has been a good day. It started off with some thunder...but no rain. We really do need it. I drove to Curves and it did rain there. I drove home and still no rain. I think it was raining everywhere but right where we live. lol I was very good yesterday and my calorie count was low. Today my breakfast was some cereal with 1% lowfat milk. I am really trying to lose weight and so is hubby. I know if we are both onboard it will make it easier.

Worked on wood for winters fire. Yes we are ahead day before yesterday and I am not sore. Filled over a rack. I am not sore. Walked up 300 vertical feet. good workout just country living on our weekends.

I have been buying a canning jar every other week.

Renters move in in Yamhill basement mid July. Rent to come on the first. $450 a month But he and I have walked the same dear trails. His dad bought the A frame My parents and I built. and that was part of the original 180 acres . Could not have asked for some one who was invested in the valley any more.

You can do a Google search for # of calories burned and put it in yourself. I think at that point you can even save it as a favorite, but I'm not sure.

I grew up in northern Ohio, so moving to the high desert plains was a shock to me. Added to that, I've watched it get drier over the 40+ years I've lived here. The last few years it's been really bad. I don't know why, but I always thought of strawberry rhubbarb pie as an Ohio thing. Maybe because in farm country everybody has a rhubbarb plant by their front door.

I love Leslie Sansone's walking video as well. I do the 1 mile walk on the days I don't or can't go outside. Or I do it after my walk to give me an extra challenge.

I have days when I wonder if I'm going to make it through my workout. Don't have any idea why they happen. Today was good for me. I was going at it like I was twenty years younger. Maybe it's because I didn't do much yesterday. My muscles were well rested.

Walking is good for the heart according to the family doctor. His prescription for me until the next visit in November is to get out and walk everyday.
Everything is looking good as far as cholosterol and blood pressure numbers.
Walking is a great medicine and very cheap too. emoticon Ahhh Just finished another dose of medicine. emoticon
