I am planning on driving from Indiana to Montana. My boyfriend has not been further West than North Dakota, so we are going to hit all the must see stops. Then we are headed South to stay on a ranch in Wyoming then back through the Black Hills. Not too rigourous, but it will be great seeing the West with a newbie. He has never really seen mountains and clear streams. Nothing but hills and muddy rivers.

I'm probably finished for the year. The nights are getting pretty cold around here. But I had a beautiful last trip in Northern Michigan for a week with my husband. It was North Manitou Island. It's such an awesome place to backpack!

It's a short trip but the dog and I are going to do Providence Canyon in mid/south Georgia in two weeks. It's only 7+ miles but it's his first trip so I'm trying to ease him in gently.

Where are you starting from for Whitney? It's possible you can still get the exit permit, they do become available if you keep trying, or you can get a walk up permit when you get to the area. My friend said he had no problem getting a permit that way, but it may depend on the day of the week you're looking to exit too, weekday would probably be better than a weekend.

My biggest trip for the summer has just fallen through, so I am looking for suggestions in the Pacific NW or the West.

We were planning to do a 50 mile 5-6 day trip finishing at Mt. Whitney August 20-24, but our friends doing the planning didn't know we needed an exit pass as well as the entrance, due to the high use on Mt Whitney. Bummer!

So, any suggestions for a 5-6 day 40-50 mile backcountry trip? I live in Idaho, so something a days drive away would be good, which could be about 12 hours.

I appreciate any suggestions! Thanks!

On the 23rd of this month my cousin and I are starting out on Indiana's hardest trail, the Knobstone. 58 miles over 5 days. I am ready and excited!!! I have been out twice this year already and ready to get more dirt under my boots.

Liberty Ridge is off, due to road damage and trail damage from floods in Nov. We may head up Rainier a different route, or go somewhere else entirely.

For July plans are to head up Mt. Whitney in a group backpack/climb, if I can get the time off work!

We may head to Mt. Rainier in mid May. Bf has his heart set on Liberty Ridge route, but it's too technical for me at this point, so it will likely be him and a friend, and I'll be base camp support team. All depending on road access which looks iffy to me at this point, but it will be a good time if we can get there.

I'm just finishing up that book too! I gave it to my BF for his birthday, thinking it would be fun to read about the area we'll be hiking. We were both disappointed when we realized that the main characters totally skipped the section we'll be hiking!!! emoticon Oh well...a very entertaining read at the very least!

Choco...I've heard nothing but great things about Isle Royale. You're gonna have a blast!

Gordine...yeah, we're totally excited about the AT trip. We just finalized our reservations yesterday. I've heard that the Shenandoah Mts are the best...we'll have to hit those someday! :)

You are gonna LOVE the thermarests! best investment ever! I also have the thermarest chair sleeve that I take with me to sit around the campfire after a days hike. :)

Happy hiking!

HEATHER,
Your trip sounds great. Good luck to you. I've backpacked a section of the AT in VA, in the Shenandoah Mts. and its was the best backpacking trip to date that I have taken.

As for me, I have a trip planned in late April. Three days and around 18-20 miles as well. Its in the western part of NC. Looking forward to getting out and about! I just bought a new THERMA-REST today that I am itching to see if they really hold up to their hype. (I've used foam pads in the past.) Most people I know tell me I will never go back to a foam pad after this, so we will see!

CHOCO,
Good luck on your trip as well!

I'm new to backpacking...although I've done lots of day hiking and camping, now I'm trying to do the "real" stuff! :-)

My first official backpacking trip will be this summer on Isle Royale Nat. park, Mi., with a couple extra days in the Porcupine Mt. area (Mi. UP)

VERY excited about it!

Looks like this topic hasn't been touched in awhile, so I'll try to spark it up again! :)

I'm very excited about my upcoming backpacking trip in June. We'll be hiking ~20 miles of the Appalachian trail, starting at Hughes Gap and ending at US 19. We'll be doing it over 3 days at the beginning of June. Can't wait! emoticon

If anyone has any experience hiking that section, or experience with the AT in general, I'd love to hear from ya!

Our next trip will probably be less hike, more ski. I live in the Cdn prairies, and since winter is approaching, the only thing to do is take your hiking to a different level. Strap on some cross country skis and use the trails that way :) Does anyone else do this? My DH and his brother are trying to fit in on last hike b/f it gets too cold, but I have to say it's already too cold at night for me! Even if my dog Nugget were to bunk w/ me! LOL

Well, the trip was a success! And I'm glad it wasn't super strenuous, because the short hike up Backbone Mountain kicked my butt!! Despite all the working out I've been doing, I am still so out of shape! How do y'all do it?!

Due to some post-grad classes I'm taking, I was all depressed thinking that my next trip wouldn't be until the weekend of my birthday in mid-November. But I see now that I have a free weekend next month! I'm going to try and plan an overnighter - locally - for that weekend.

Success is the best revenge.

So where do you plan to hike/backpack/camp next?

Our plans for Labor Day weekend fell through, so I'm trying to hurriedly put together a whirlwind tour in the Appalacians.

Going to attempt to hit (in 2 days):
Spruce Knob, WV (4863 ft)
Backbone Mountain, MD (3360 ft)
Mount Davis, PS (3213 ft)

I don't know if any camping will be available because of the holiday weekend, so we might end up cheating and staying in a hotel. Neither I nor my husband is super fit right now, so the luxury of a bed might be our one saving grace on this trip!!

------------ update ------------------
I just finished making camping reservations for our trip. Itinerary as follows:

Day 1:
Drive from Cleveland, OH to Spruce Knob, WV.
Summit the highest point in WV.
Camp at Spruce Knob Lake Campground for the night. (maybe bike around, depending on time of day)

Day 2:
Drive to Blackwater Falls, WV.
Hike about the falls area.
Drive to Backbone Mountain, MD.
Summit the highest point in MD.
Drive to Mount Davis, PA.
Summit the highest point in PA.
Drive to Keystone State Park, PA for the night.

Day 3:
Drive up to Saltsburg, PA for some kayaking.
Spend a few hours paddling.
Drive back home to OH.

I am *SO* excited!!!!! I know it's not a super strenuous trip, but I think it'll be tons of fun, and it'll be great to just get out and enjoy the outdoors!!!
