Headed up to the White's (NH) this weekend. My girls and I are base camping, since we're only doing a 9 mile loop (Mt. Lafayette- check it out). I'm pretty stoked to knock off two 4Ks! Any other New Englanders here?

Hi Everyone, So great to hear of everyone's hiking adventures! I am preparing for a long weekend in the Porcupine Mountains, Upper Michigan. Can't wait to get back up there. Was also there in October to see gorgeous colors! Will most likely hike between 20-25 miles in 3 days, can't wait!

Hi there! I;m new to the group as of today. I thought I would go looking for a backpacking group and I'm so glad I found one!
I'm from Utah, so there is no shortage of great hikes and backpack trips just outside my front door. In fact, my goal is to be at a healthy BMI next summer and to do 2 backpacking trips with my husband. I Want to be in Southern Utah with a pack on my back, on my 31 birthday. All of my fitness training is geared toward being a strong hiker. Anyway, so good to find the group, hope to hear from you all soon.

I just got home from a trip in Idaho's Sawtooth Mountains. We covered 52 miles in 5 days with a loop route. Great trip!

I had a great tip from someone before going, and don't know if anyone else has tried this:
wrap cheese in a cheesecloth that was soaked in vinegar. We did this, squeezed the cheesecloth before wrapping the cheese. The flavor didn't change. The cheese never got the soft greesy texture the entire trip!

The wolverine sighting was really cool. It was scrambling down a wash, the along the trail ahead of us. It disappeared in the tress, and there was no sign of it when we got there. We reported it to a ranger and were told that one is know to be in that area.

Glacier N. P. is awesome! Your going to love it. I went there last summer with my GF. We didn't have a chance to do any backpacking, but we did a few day hikes. You absolutely have to hit the Highline Trail, it's beautiful and there's plenty of wildlife. We saw mountain goats, bighorn sheep, deer, a grizzly and even a wolverine! From Highline, you can cross over to Swiftcurrent Valley (aka the Many Glacier area). Many hikes from there. There are also some spectacular trails in the Two Medicine area near East Glacier. You really can't go wrong in this park!

For more info, I have a blog of the trip at:

Cheers,
Ed

Welcome, I've never been to Glacier, but it's on my list! My BF worked there years ago (pre-college for him in the '70's) and loved it.) From what I hear it's hard to go wrong there!

Hi! I'm new - live in Portland, OR. My DH and I are planning a backpacking trip to Glacier NP this summer, and I've become sort of obsessed with the entire trip planning process. Anybody been there and have routes that really stand out? We are taking Amtrak. We're thinking we'll get off at West Glacier and take a shuttle up to a trailhead. We'll do 5 nights in backcountry, and maybe a couple other one-night out trips. Suggestions welcomed, we're so new to this!

We've been getting a few storms here and there, but not enough for XC skiing. I'm going to be patient though, it will get here, and right now it's cold, but sunny, so I'll just appreciate that!

We did a 2 hr 40 min mountain bike yesterday, no snow where we were, but there is snow on Mt Rose (over 10,000ft elevation) and on some of the other higher peaks around here. We did a hike last weekend where we saw a tiny bit of lingering snow from the prior storm.

Hope we have a good snow year, so far it looks encouraging!

What an accomplishment! Good for you and your son for finishing the tri, and great that you could participate in that together.

We were out hiking last weekend, it was a nice long 7 hr hike, and some snow and ice up on the higher parts of the trail.

Anyone else enjoying the fall weather, and getting out on a trail?

Today was a big milestone for me. I participated in my first triathlon. 1/2 mile swim, 24 miles bike and 6 mile run. I came in second to last but I did it. I run very slow but I still ran the whole 6 miles. My son came in almost a half hour after me. His legs had cramped up but he still finished walking and still won his age group even though he came in fast. The director dude came up to me after and said he doesn't remember the last time he has had someone under 18 on the long course and that we both should be proud of ourselves because even coming in last we still did something most people can't do. I am proud of myself. I did it around 3 1/2 hours. My son was just under 4 hours. We did good.

I do think that I wouldn't have come in last had I chosen the short course. The last people who passed me didn't pass until i had passed the turn around. I did it to challenge myself. I will blog about this soon tonight so if anyone wants to hear more in detail you can read about it on my blog.

Didn't do any backpacking, but we did have a great week in the Ruby Mountains in Central Nevada. I would highly recommend the area for car camping, hiking, backpacking, and climbing. We did some great hikes, a couple of climbs, and biked on the main road in Lamoille canyon, and it was so peaceful and beautiful. Check out my vacation blog for details if you are interested.

If you can try out your equipment ahead of time (wear the back pack to get the adjustments right, and set up the tent to make sure you are familiar with it and have all the parts) that might help. I always tend to bring more than I end up using, so you may want to try to edit what you pack, and only bring things you know you will want and use. Of course you never know exactly what thing you'll miss, but usually for a day or 2 you can live without things you think you "need". Going lighter if you can will make your trip nicer just from the pack not being as much of a struggle.

Really, since you are going with someone who knows the ropes, you can just enjoy the trip, hope it all goes well and you have a great time!

I've been on many multiple all day hikes when camping. I've just never backpacked in. I think it will be fun. It is a path that I am semi familiar with if the fires have died down but I'm also flexable in that if it is too smokey in the area I will head over to a different area away from the fires and breathe in the clean air. I've just wanted to do Half Dome but I live close enough that I can always do that at another time.

Have fun, don't overdue and take the muscle rub incase you do. I am taking two first timers along with two others out on an easy hike in Mt. Jefferson wilderness this weekend. Wait till they find out that on a short hike we make camp dump the packs and go on day hikes away from base camp. I hope thet enjoy.

So I will be leaving on a camping trip which will include 3 days backpacking with son. It will be my first backpacking trip. Not his but he is a teenager. Any advice?

Itwas a fun trip. Just spent the day in another old growth area on the santiam pass. The land in some spots around here were to rugged to be commecially processed, our gain.

New pics on my page. Two great trips last weekend went up eagle creek trailhead to 7 1/2 mile camp second day we were going up to whatum lk and over to the benson plateau and down ruckel creek tr. We had to amend the trip as noone was geared up to cross snow fields that were still soft so we found a trail that connested up to the pct. like all link-ups I've been on it was brutal 2600ft in 4 miles. weekend after the DW and I and the dogs went into the middle santiam area. got to hike miles thru an old growth grove that the forest service has never been able to harvest due to the terrain. It was absolutely beautiful.

That's a lot of pictures! Be careful where you change those out, a friend of mine lost one of those on a rim to rim hike of the GC a few years back, was changing the card on a bridge (not a good idea!) and dropped the full one, DOH!

Thanks Kayotic,

Havn't left yet. My pack is put back together and in the truck. My food is prepared, sandwiches, fruit, sunflower seeds, raisins, a few apples. With any luck I will be in the bottom of the GC by this time tomorrow or Tuesday night. :)

I look forward to seeing and hearing everything about others adventures. Rest assured I am taking 9 gigs of SD cards. I will have plenty of photos. :)

Hope your trip works out AZbackpacker! You should be there now...let us know how it went!

We're going for a bike ride today, up to Hobar Reservior out of Carson City, NV. We've done it before, it's a challenging ride, that I have never been able to make it riding all the way up. But I keep on trying! I'll get to try out my Garmin too, so it will be interesting to see the totals...

Morning all,

I am getting excited!! I am hoping to go to the Grand Canyon Sunday night and get a walk up permit. Hoping to get a couple of nights in the bottom. I believe I have been doing enough cardio to be all right. I normally prepare by a lot of walking. Time will tell. :)

That's a pretty good weight to add to your walk! And I bet your daughter enjoys it too. Great that you found someone to walk with, I'd love to walk in your area (or really hike, peak climb, all those 14er's!)

Oh, I just weighed the rig (sans kid & zip-on backpack), and it's exactly five pounds. Or, as exact as I can tell on my crappy old scale! :)

Hi, you folks. I just took a walk with a neighbor I met through SP, with my 30 lb. kiddo strapped to my back. I love the REI kid carrier I use. For a short walk (60 min) like we took, I don't zip the backpack onto it, so it's probably 35 lbs. or less.
Spring is back in Colorado Springs! :)

I've crept out of my goal range since early this week. My eating has been in line w/ my norm, and I've been good about working out, so I think it may be hormonal. I did make an appt with the doctor, so I'll probably have that checked out, along w/ my vitamin D levels.

It's been raining all week, hopefully that means snow in the mountains, and I'm off this week, so I hope to get some good skiing in.

Anyone else have plans to get outdoors?

Have to make a point of getting to the doctor and getting the vitamin D level checked. I've been taking the pills regularly, so it should be in a good range by now. Just have to find the time...

We've been doing a lot of XC skiing, and I'm really enjoying that this year. It's a great way to get out and enjoy the snow!

I've mostly taken all the Vitamin D's I should, I think I just missed one pill this past week.

My weight is up a little out of range, but that was expected, I had 5 holiday events in 4 days this week, and no time for working out! Glad this week is over, and Christmas is almost here!

I was good about taking the stairs at work, as much as I could, I will give that a go again this week!
