Okay. Quick question: Are you going to be going to the class to work out or make friends?

If you're there to make friends, then you can worry about what you look like. If you're there to workout and break a sweat busting your ass trying to be DONE even more, then who cares what the others think? If it helps, take a loud mouthed friend with you to class. My friend and I took a Booty Bootcamp class together and we were in the front of the class. The biggest two in front. Everytime someone snickered or shot us dirty looks I would say something to them. One bitch walked by us with her friend and looked us up and down and said we'd pass out halfway through the class or need to break for a candybar or something. She may have been right, but she didn't have to say that cruel junk. I bit my tongue until we started getting really into it and sweating up a storm and she laughed when my friend had to stop for water and I looked at her and smiled while still working out harder than her and said, "Look bitch, you're make-up is running and if you think you're funny because you made comments about us before hand let's step outside and I'll give your ass a workout that will truly wear you out. If not, shut the fcuk up and get out of class before you pop an implant." The next ten weeks of the class she kept her mouth shut and her eyes down. Plus she stopped wearing make-up to the gym.

Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out. - Robert Collier

We all know that age-old adage about eating right and exercising to get in shape, but what about creating a positive self-image that is not based on pounds, dress size, or ‘fat’ feelings?

I just did a step class last night! Ohhh boy was it hilarious or what!! But I stuck to it and did as well as the girls who had been there ten times before.

YOU CAN DO anything you put your mind to, so good luck and kick some butt in that class!

I did HIP HOP class of all things with a friend. It was great. There were amazing dancers in there, but then there were plenty of girls just like me, barely hanging on. We were all just having fun and laughing and sweating at the same time. It was judgmental at all.

So did you end up going? If not please please try step on Monday. Let us hear about it :)

I used to be the same way - terrified and embarassed of going to classes. My gym is full of professional 20-somethings (like me) and they're generally super fit and gorgeous. I had never planned on taking a class, but one day a bunch of girls from work decided to go to a 6am step class together. I didn't want to be left out of the lunch conversation that day so I went. It was so so hard for me - I couldn't catch onto the routine and was such a klutz. But it was such a good workout and I wanted to PROVE to myself that I could do it, so I ended up going back. I ended up falling in love with it and now my favorite classes are step, body pump (a weightlifting class) and yoga. I've also tried Body Flow (a yoga/tai chi fusion), kickboxing and Zumba. Zumba was fun and I liked it, but I didn't stick with it because it wasn't as challenging as step. Your heartrate really gets pumping in step.

I have never heard or perceived any comments or snickers - everyone is so concerned with themselves that they don't really care who else is in the class. I might recommend trying to get there a few minutes early to introduce yourself to the instructor, tell her you're new, and ask for any tips. ALL of the instructors I've ever had have been very nice and supportive.

Best of luck and let us know how it goes! And please don't give up if you feel like a klutz the first time :)

OMG DO IT! I've been going to this dance class at my local 24-hour fitness on Saturday mornings. I was pretty self conscious at first, and I still always stand in the back, but its SO much fun! No one cares what you look like, and this is coming from a girl living in South Orange County where a good chunk of people at the class have fake boobs and fake tans.

After I fell in love with that class, I started looking in to other dance classes. I tried Zumba, it is very fun and easy to follow, but the classes aren't easy for me to make it to on time after work.

So I found some more dance classes at other clubs in the area. Last night I went to a hip-hop dance class, and it was probably THE best class I've ever been to, and I'm totally feeling it today...

The best part is, there was a lady bigger and about 20 years older than me there hip hopping it up, it was great!

There's no need to feel self conscious! Just go, and have fun!

I did aerobics.

Oh yeah, that's pretty embarassing. but you know? All of those people, whether they're skinny or not, are trying to do the same thing as you - get off their butts and do something about their unhappiness, and trust me, they will be crying and sweating just as much as you!! I had to not use the step for awhile and whenever I showed up all the people where like "go kat! whoo!" because I was trying to get my terrible unhealthiness in control! :)

People can be absolute dolls. So don't feel so bad about being overweight and with them - who knows, maybe all of them were too?

Cheers,
Kat

I still to this day dont know how i managed to sign up for a step class and end up loving it. I was 200 lbs, had diagnosed social anxiety, didn't workout much, totally uncoordinated, and self-concious about my very heavy sweating ... but i did it and fell in LOVE with it, and went twice a week for a year and a half! I recently moved across country and desperately miss my class. No one was mean, even though i was the biggest gal there. I even managed to fall a few times, but everyone was always very cool and kind. So GO FOR IT. Who would have thought an hour long step class would be MY highlight for the week? You never know what you're going to find until you try.

I use the gym at the community college instead of a regular gym, cause it's WAY cheaper, and at first I was really intimidated by all the 18 year old perfect bodies and stuff... but now I just love it. Frankly everyone is in there to do their own thing and not paying any attention to what you're doing.

I also take a swim class, which has a lot of very inshape people and requires me to be in front of them in a bathing suit, which i thought was going to be horrifying, but it's SERIOUSLY the highlight of my day! Everyone is super nice and friendly and positive and again, no one cares if you're slower or fatter or new to the skill set.

It was hard when I started with my personal trainer, because he had me lunging down the aisles at the gym, doing pushups in the multi-purpose room - and the gym was full of hot body builders! Now, I don't even notice them, unless one of us is cracking a joke. You will find that no matter what size you are, people have respect for you that you are doing something to better yourself, working hard to improve your body.

I also signed up for a belly dancing class - WAY out of my comfort zone! Most of the people in there were so shy and afraid to just let go and DANCE, but I just give myself over to the music and MOVE, even though I know I'm not that graceful!

Exercise is so much more fun, and so much easier, if you can learn to let go of your inhibitions and focus on your form and determination. You're doing this for you, not for the Barbies, so who cares if they snicker? Just smirk at them like you know something they don't (I will sometimes even laugh out loud) and keep on working! Nothing like a confused Barbie to make your day better lol!

Go for it, girlie!

I have a friend that I go to the gym with, who is SOOO afraid to do a class also. But her and I are on the treadmill, watching the people in class, forming opinions.....so like I told her, other people have a right to form opinions on us, like we do others. That's just people. Like everyone else has said....their opinions don't matter! We know the reason we are there!!

AND......I do have the big ol 23 year old body builder nephew, who I think spends more time at the gym than he does home......I asked him, what his opinion or what goes through his mind when he see's us "fat" people at the gym..........and Mr. Health-minded said he thinks it's GREAT! It shows that we are honestly trying to do something to make us healthier. To take care of us. And he's even told me, not to EVER let what I THINK people are thinking keep me away from the gym......that the reason we're ALL there, is we ALL are working on ourselves.....because we all have something we're not happy about.......

AND one more lil tid-bit that was an eye opener to me.....(sorry this has turned into a book)....I have a dear friend who is all of 5'1" and pre-pregnancy weight was 96 lbs......who looked at me and said, "I'm skin and bones, but that doesn't mean I'm in shape! I need to go to the gym, because I don't have the energy to run after my 2 year old without getting out of breath!"

So, in short (yeah, right!) if you are doing this for you....to get yourself healthy........remember a lot of those people are not even "thinking" what you THINK they are thinking!!

Better hear of your butt in class next week!! emoticon

I'm going to take a Zumba class tonight. I'm kinda nervous. I don't really like going to workout classes by myself. Has anyone taken a zumba class?

I went to a yoga class in June with my cousin when I went to visit her. The class lasted an hour and a half. I lasted a half hour and just sat there for the rest of it like a big blob on a purple mat. It was so hard. I am not used to getting on my hands and knees let alone getting in a pretzle position and holding it for a long period of time. But I would say to go for it. If you cant do it you can work up to it.

Well, I'd say definitely give it a try. Remember two things: first, the people you see doing it had their own "first" time; and secondly, you are there for "yourself" and not to prove anything to anyone else.

If you don't feel very comfortable, try to be in the back of the room and go at your own pace. These classes seem harder if you are watching it, but once you are with the group doing it, it is not that hard. I was new once and a class instructor encouraged me to join in. I say give it a try!!

GO FOR IT! I've belonged to a gym since I was 15 and in great shape. That's lucky for me because now that I'm bigger, I'm still comfortable going.
For the first few years I would put on make-up and shower BEFORE going to ensure that I looked good, but then would hardly work out just in case I might look bad - terrible, I know. Even then, I never ever looked down on or stared at bigger people at the gym! In fact, I was always sure to give them an encouraging smile, I was proud of them for getting active.

In regards to aerobics classes, I've always felt a little self-conscious there but I think everyone does the first time they go. I'm a big believer in diving right in! If you feel uncomfortable, just stay in the back for the first few classes and with time you'll be a lot more at ease!

I agree with what everyone has said here. You are exercising for you so just go for it. What is the worse thing that could happen someone might stare or make a rude comment but you are stronger you are done.

I've gone to classes for years and I've embarrassed myself more than once, in fact I've even passed out a couple of times ( I should explain I have very low blood pressure and when I over heat I will at times pass out). Talk about calling attention to myself. To be honest with you everyone for the most part is trying to accomplish the same goals as you, to be healthier and more fit.

Please do let us know how it goes.

I've always thought that people are always staring at me because I'm big. but, I think over the last few months that really not many people care. heck two thirds of our county is overweight so I think as a society we are getting used to bigger people anyway. I get embarassed easily, but when I have the finances to join a gym, I'm going for it.

Actually, no. I"m in total hidey-mode. I go to work, the store when I have to.. and other than that and walking or hiking (on very off times so as not to run into anyone) I try to be alone and hidden away. :( Terrible I know.. but true.

I'm one of those.. I"ll go to the gym when I lose some weight people. *sigh* I know, I know.. it's terrible, but true.

I used to go to Kelly Lyn (a women's only gym)I did classes and machines and I don't recall anyone starring at me - people would talk if they were on the machine next to me. Most people are focusing on what they are doing.

Now I go to an aerobics class 3x a week - it's a smaller class and I am BY FAR the largest person there and noone stares. My first few classes my fellow classmates encouraged me and told me to just do what I can and I will be able to do more each time - and they were right.

All over the country, Done girls are going to gyms for exercise. There will probably be one in your gym. I went for the first time to an adult ed, at age 72, and found people very welcoming and helpful. I did things at my own pace, and it didn't seem to get any special attention. Just kindness and friendship. Try it! You may really like it. At the very least you will learn the correct form for doing exercises at home.

The "Barbie's" seem to be looking for men. If you people watch, (like I do) you'll notice that they spend their time watching the guys to make sure the guys are watching them. Don't waste time being concerned about them. They just want to make sure you aren't after the guys.

Just go in there like you own the place and do what you gotta do!! emoticon

You will notice at the gym that the "Barbies" stick together, but you will notice that in a few weeks they tend to not come anymore and the people like you who are serious and that includes the body builers will be the ones working out. So go for it. If you can't do something laugh about it. Its ok. You are there to take care of you. Jeriemoticon

As long as you are there for you and working to better yourself you should be proud to be there, not embarrassed.

I do understand where you are coming from though. When I work out my face gets beet red. It is a family trait, it happens to all my sisters too. I have had instructors ask me if I need to slow down and breathe.

After a while I started warning instructors that I get really red in the face and that I am okay so not to worry. It is embarrassing to be a big person working out and having everyone notice that I am appearing to suck wind!!

Stick to it! You can do it!!!!!!

You know, it was a huge turning point for me when I started walking in our yard. I ride my bike around an oval path we made in our yard, and then I walk around the same oval. I hated the fact that I can feel the stares of the neighbors as the watch me through the windows. There is one little boy that comes out and sits on his fence and watches me the whole time I am out there - every time. I used to get so embarassed, but now I have realized that I care more about getting fit than I do their opinions. Do it for you! You never know, they may be staring out of admiration instead of snootieness. teehee

There will always be those rude shallow people...but there will be those that are encouragers and then there will be those that came from where we are right now. Go for it!!! Imagine the looks you'll get from Barbie when you are DONE!!! ;-)

OK - take a small bag of rocks along with you and if anyone looks at you funny throw rocks at them.
KIDDING!!!!emoticon
You don't even know those people!! They will not send daggers your way, they will be busy exercising. If it will make you feel better, go to the back, but I assure you that you will not be out of place as soon as you learn the routine! They will give you credit for being there and getting healthy!! And some of them will envy you for being confident enough to do it BEFORE you are a skinny minny! Just tell yourself that by doing it you are getting into great shape - just like they are and if you DON'T do it you will never be healthy!

GO FOR IT - YOU ARE A DONIE!!!!!

I tried a gym last year before I REALLY started to lose weight (so, I was at LEAST 322 pounds). My experience was this:

- A couple of rude looks (the up and down kind) and snickers from Barbies

- 6 or 7 people coming up to me - including TWO muscle-bound guys - saying that they thought it was GREAT I was there, and "way to go".

So - from my honest experience - yeah, there are rude people wherever you go - but there are MORE people rooting for you. Who cares what the low-self-esteem Barbies think??

Maybe it's because I have been a clutz my whole life, even when I was thin, but I'll try just about anything. I don't care what I look like to others. If you enjoy and are getting some good exercise in what does it matter? Besides most people are concentrating on themselves and will barely even notice you.

I'm sure you'll get plenty of "go for it" responses, but I'm all for NOT looking like an ass!

I've never had the guts to go for anything other than a spin class, where I sat in the back so no one had to look at my gigantic butt.

I have and it turned out well. Just forget about everyone else and do it! Everyone no matter the size is there for the same reason to be healthy. It maybe hard at first but after a couple times you will be a pro!!

good luck

I would like to try a class at my gym. Every time i see one going on I get discouraged. It looks so hard and all the people there seem to be "skinny" and able to do everything. I really afraid of making a complete ass out of my self. Has anyone ever taken the plunge and did one? Was it as embarrassing as you thought?
