No. I gave up and I just go on the main computer. No biggie but it would be nice to be able to do it on the iPad.

Easy to add miles. Just right click on the last place you were on your map.
Select "Directions From Here". Next, right click somewhere close to where you should be along your route and select "Directions to Here". Now drag the last point created (point "B") and you will see the miles (or kilometers) displayed next to this point as you drag it. (If it shows in kilometers and you want miles; scroll toward the top on the left screen and select the blue text that says: "Show Options". There you can select miles or kilometers.) You may need to zoom out or in to get it where you can adjust it accurately.
Once you have it where it reflects the new miles traveled; go to the left side of the screen and scroll down. You should see: "Save to My Maps" in blue text. Click on this and choose your map in the window that pops up, then click on save.
Now you can open your map up (top of the right side says: "View map".

http://www.atdist.com/ - this is the mileages between points on the Appalachian Trail. I have my own system for keeping my numbers. I just went in and wrote down the mile posts and locations on a word document. Then keep my mileage totals off my fitness and periodically check where I'm at. I started at Springer Mountain, GA.

on Dec. 25, 2011 I am at 259.72 miles and I am in NC headed towards the Deer Park Mountain Shelter which is at milepost 268.6.

Start with small steps and momentum will build. Celebrate moving in the direction of increased happiness now! With a plan and persistence moving towards your goals all things are possible! ♥ From Ask-Angels.com

I did "create a new map." It allows me to create a title and description - and that's it.

I'll have to look for the "save to my maps" option.

Thanks!

it started out to be a walk from Quantico to Area 51. We decided to continue around the world there are pages of other POIs from the older portions of the walk. Google maps let's you do that (clunky) but it does have memory limits which cause the "paging".

Did you "Create new map"? If you create one then select a route, it treats the routeas a separate thing. If you go to the bottom of the route list on the left it should say "Save to My Maps", as long as you did not select a walking or bike map or any of the other Custom routes. For some reason those drop the option for "Save to My Maps".

I use Firefox and it works. There are a lot of strange work-arounds in Google maps. Here is a link to my map for this months walk: maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=2098529

Google Maps is being evil for me. Maybe it's because I use Firefox. I don't know.

I can save the title of my trip, but not any maps. I can't even save a map separately.

I did my route the easy way. I picked a road that goes across the country (US 20) then looked up where it starts and ends and then put those cities into Google Maps. Voila! I have my route.

OK. I found a way to search for user created maps! GO to the regular Google search and search for:
Appalachian trail site:maps.Google.com/maps/ms

the part:
site:maps.Google.com/maps/ms
limits the search to Google maps and will show user created content.

Enjoy!

Apparently Google maps has decided to drop the ability to search for "user created maps". They say there was a bug and it will work if you do a bunch of stuff that no one would be able to do, but that doesn't work either, because I tried it. So until they fix that, it is hard to search for good content.

What a wonderful idea!! :) I made one today, it kept ticking me off though, kept adding distance when I was making the line. I would make it exactly the miles I have gone sofar, and it would add more! UGH. Finally got it though :)

I am using Google and the fitness map to check my distance on my Russian walk. I also have a Russian Federation map (1:2 000 000-1:8 000 000) which is useful for overall direction. I wish I could find some individual city maps, though. But that is also how Google is helping me. I also check out the individual town on the internet for sights, hotels, and such, and I can get some maps that way.

Machu Picchu has been a difficult mapping hike. The trails and roads are not navigable by my normal means. (directions from here to here giving me distance.) Instead I had to draw a line carefully to follow the trails. The line shows me distance as I draw it.

A couple of days ago my line hit it's limits, where it would not create new points, and I had to start a new line. It seems that Google maps has made this limit better but it still hits limits.

I have hunted for more information on how to master this, but you hit the nail on the head! Keep working with it and you will BE the master! BTW, they also keep changing it and the way it works, LOL.

I have 4 blogs on using Google maps. Here is the first one. These are older blogs and it doesn't always work the same way since they have been changing the way the maps work: www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_jo

I did notice that with the two pages. Everytime I think I have it figured out I can't recreate what I just did. lol I keep playing with it to see what I can come up with.

Thank you for your help!

Heather,
First of all I would like to commend your diligence in learning as much as you already have! When faced with an unruly line you found ways to force it back into shape.

I draw my line as I go... daily adding the miles I walked to the line rather than follow the line as I go.To get my mileage on the line correctly I right click the start point and get directions from there to a point along my route at a distance close to what I think my miles would be along that route. You can then slide the second point slowly back and forth along your route until the miles equal what you walked. At that point I save it to my map. (If the route that it selected didn't follow your intended route, you can point at the route line at some point where it in not on the route that you intended and drag it back to the road that you wanted. You may have to do this in several places.)

I delete the route that it drew delete the "from" point and rename the "to" point to include the date and miles walked. Since I deleted the route, I redraw it with my own line. I don't use the follow road option as it is memory intensive and makes the map so large that it starts splitting it into "pages". That also goes for making too many lines and making the line "too" accurate in following the road. Instead I add onto the original line each time I log my miles. (I really on have two lines from southern Illinois to southern Florida.)If you look at the bottom of the left side of your screen you see that your map has already created 2 pages.

To extend the line each day I point at the last square of the original line and drag it to my finish point. When you do this the line will automatically create a center point from where it left off to where you moved the end point. (Make sure you drag the endpoint and not another point from the line.) These center points that it creates can now be dragged to points along the route so that they better follow the road that you intended.

Hi finfin, here's a link to my map, ignore the random blue line across Virgina, not sure how it got there and it won't let me delete it.

In the upper right side of your map there is a "link" button. If you click on this it opens a box with two lines in it. The first is a link that you can post here, like this; maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=e
n&
msa=0&msid=106711092058250968397.000R>45480eca28b2261b59&ll=40.465756,-124
.7

If you post your map here I could look at your map and make a suggestion. (The above link is a link to a map that I do for another team.)If your map is set to public, other people can view and comment on it but not change it.

Thank you so much fin! This is very helpful. I'm still not sure how to add my personal milage to the map but I'll play around with it and see what I come up with.

The Blue Ridge Parkway is not labeled at all in North Carolina, I can't believe that. I also saw that on the line draw option you can choose the option to draw a line to follow a road, that helped but it was fighting me the whole way so I had to do mine in a lot of small segments.

Owl,

It sounds like your map is made of several segments and you are just seeing the data from each segment.

If your map is public and you send me a link I could take a look at it!

FIN, thanks for this info. I have used Google maps and variants of it before, but never used My Maps.

Now for my question: I have a route with several points in it. If I select one of the points, it tells me the distance between it and the previous point, but no where can I find the total length of the route. Do you know how to do it?

I have had several ask about how to use Google maps, so I thought I should write this up. Hopefully we can add to the knowledge here and people can come here to ask questions.

How do you draw routes on Google Maps?

First you need a Google maps account. It is free. Then one your logged in you click on "My Maps". It is on the top of the left side bar. The just to the left of "My Maps" and under it one line is; "Create new map". Click on that.

It will open your new map with the "Title" already selected. Type in what you want to call it. watch the "Save" and "Done" buttons. It seems to auto save but I usually hit the button anyway.

You will already be in "Edit" mode. If you close Google maps and return and go back to my maps and select it you will have to also click an "edit" button.

If you move the map and zoom to were you want to start, you can enter a "point of interest". (upside down) teardrop. That is located in a little square button in the upper left area of the map. Click on that button, then put the little cross hairs where you want it to be and click again. You name this, put notes in it and even picture if you use the "text rich" mode.

To the right of the "point of interest" button is the "line" button. I like to start by moving the "Click to start drawing a line" cross hairs to anywhere that there is not another object. Next click and release, then point to another location and click and release. You can use this to draw a line, but I like to click the second spot twice to complete the line.

Now the line is drawn; but it isn't where you want. If you point on the line, you will see white boxes for each point. If you point right on one of the white boxes it will darken a shade or two. At that point you can click on the box and drag it to where you wanted it to be. Next I click on the other end and drag it to where I'm wanting to go. Don't worry that the straight line doesn't follow the path that is your route.Notice that there is a center white box. you can drag this point to the first turn in your route and drop it. the line will create two more points on either side of the point you just dropped. In this way you can build your line to follow your route. You can keep moving the end points as you progress with your daily miles.

This line is great for measuring distances also. When I wrote this I was trekking through Peru, toward Machu Picchu. While there are other easier ways to get routes on your maps (by right clicking and selecting "from here, to here", Google Maps was not able to calculate a route for the maps in Peru. By drawing my own line I can add my milage in daily.
