Sorry. I don't know what got into me... well. Actually. It WAS the 2 quarts of kefir for $1...

How CAN you pass up a deal like that?

I mean.

Uh-oh, does that mean I'm going to be carrying to flag by myself this week? LOL!

Okay, you may have a 'by' due to perishables.

I've gotta do something with that kefir... and I can't do Vegan Week again until I get rid of summa this Amish cheese... I have a piece of white Colby the size of my head in the fridge and it's starting to turn funny...

I have already decided on my 'basic' smoothie:

1/4c oats
2tbsp wheat germ
1/4tsp cinnamon
6oz almond milk
1tbsp peanut butter
1/2c frozen fruit
1.2tbsp agave (if needed)

I made that with a frozen banana yesterday, good stuff. I tried it with plain yogurt instead of almond milk and peanut butter, with frozen mixed berries this morning - NOT a fan. It was very tart, and not worth the calories.

I'm going to try the standard smoothie with banana for breakfast tomorrow and see if it holds me until lunch. Probably will, the two I had that I finished were VERY filling.

She prolly will... and that Spark Team of hers IS going to take up a LOT of time... which is probably a good thing since I have way too may teams I'm just fooling around on or not doing anything at all...

I found some kefir at my Amish scratch and dent store! I bought 2 quarts (2/$1!) expressly with you in mind so I could make some smoothies...

Now, to find the blender...

Maybe Yoovie will let us have a 'vegan week' thread in the new team...?

I think that team is going to take up all of our time. I've been wiping teams off my list tonight, I had too many. Though I don't know why it matters. LOL!

Finishing vegan week tomorrow.

I made my first smoothie tonight. I'm FULL!!!!

2tbsp raw organic cacao powder, 1tbsp agave, 1tbsp organic peanut butter, cinnamon, 1/2 cup frozen cherries, 6oz almond milk...pretty darn good, but VERY rich (too much cacao), but LORD was it filling. I'm just now getting around to eating anything else tonight.

Excellent!

Thx, Rose!

I have gotten nailed twice on recipes from SP recipes that ARE vegan but the sodium was just through the roof and I had already eaten them by the time I figured out what I had done!!

I'm going to go nose around these websites now!

I am an omni I try to go organic and limiting my red meat and pork servings to 3 times a week. I am now trying to do new veg. and vegan recipes (New Year's resolution). One thing I would suggest spice up your spice rack dried chilies fenugreek, herb de provance, paprika, curry mixes. Here is a vegan blog I just love it's called Vegan YumYum. The cookbook is amazing. Also, Post punk kitchen another blog/website

You know... I'm starting to think the PNB is the trouble... but not really...

The one thing I did notice is that about a month ago I let my water intake drop from 12 glasses or more to BARELY 8 or 9... and that is the ONLY thing different about my eating and exercising since my weight loss has stalled despite caloric deficits of about 1100 a day... for a MONTH!!

So the last 3 days I've been focused on getting 12 cups into me... and lo and behold... a Christmas miracle...

I'm down almost 3 pounds...

So, I guess tomorrow begins another Vegan Week WITH the water upped and let's see if the body has come around to my way of thinking...

I'm going to be SO aggravated if 3 cups of water a day has taken FOUR WEEKS worth of weight loss away... Grrrr.

I think I should get fitness points for being p!ssed...

Y'know, soup is the one think I don't really make.

I should probably see about that.

I used to make chicken and dumplings back when I had a big family to cook for, but things like that are an awful lot of trouble for one...

Hm.

Cheese day. I'm making an omelette for breakfast when I wake up.

Yeah. Exercise. I'm so wiped out right now...it is SOOOO busy at my store. Almost over. Just a few more days, and then things will only be INCREDIBLY busy instead of PSYCHO busy.

Welll... usually my fat is on the low side... as is my protein... and my calcium... but I take a calcium supplement so I don't worry about that...

I don't think a body needs more than 30 grams of protein to preserve organ and muscle tissue (that doesn't mean it's true; just that I believe it) and I wish I could live without fat altogether while my body lives off what I've stored on my bum...

So, sources of low-fat protein are important to me... since I think tofu is disgusting... of course, now I'm looking for a willing Asian to come and cook for me...

I'm gonna try craigslist...

How funny...my fat is always really low during vegan week. Protein and fat take a dive, fiber goes way up, and then during off week, they swap. How is your fat normally? Do you have to work to keep it down? Mine balances out from one week to the next, so I don't even think about it.

Yeah, I've gotten caught with extra foods that won't keep too. I've had to learn not to buy certain things at the same time. I never get more than half a dozen eggs at once. I never buy cottage cheese and yogurt at the same time. I've learned that most cheese will freeze for a short time without suffering too much horrible side effect (I really can't bear to throw it out or leave it sitting, unloved, in the refirgerator.)

I'm wondering what to do with the 7 hard boiled eggs that seem to be sitting in my fridge... Only two days to eat them and I'm like... Bleah.

I think the dogs will be eating egg salad this weekend... Mmmm... stinky...

I'm also wondering how to keep my fat under control next week because I'm sort of fixated on that jar of cashew butter on my shelf...

I was talking to my aesthetician the other day (we talk about my entire health, since it all effects your skin) and she said to try tofu prepared in an authentic Asian way. She said even soy milk at the Asian markets tastes totally different from the American stuff.

Cause I don't do tofu either. The only soy product I like at all is the Boca chik'n. You can keep the fake hamburger stuff. Don't care for soy milk. Soy ice cream isn't bad, but that's not something that I want enough to need the fake stuff. The faux cheese makes me retch.

I'm loving my cheese right now. I've had homemade pizza for the past four days for dinner. LOL!!!

I should pay more attention... I ran across a blog of a chick who was in Tree-MEN-Dus shape the other day... and I just had to know what this woman was eating that she could look like that... and so I stalked her food plan and she was pounding down these smoothies... a couple of them a day... there was some kind of stuff she was putting in them that I should have taken note of and of course I can't remember her name either... so I'm no help to you, Steph, since I'm not that big on smoothies...

I like 'em and all.. but by the time I get home at lunch time to let the creatures out... and I have committed to them that I will do that... one is older and deserves to pee more than once every 8 hours and one is pretty newly off the street and needs some structure in his doggie life... so I don't have a lot of time to get all the stuff together and blend it before they're out and I'm back on the road to the office...

Now, a recipe for tofu that didn't make me blench... THAT would be good.

The only thing I can't get at all right now are blueberries and nectarines.

It sucks b/c I put blueberries in my cereal every day. Well, I did, when I could GET THEM!!! I only buy organic. The non-organic ones suck. You can find an organic strawberry or raspberry every now and then. I can't WAIT until next years when fruit is around again!!!

I'm learning about making smoothies - never made one before. Now that my necesary food volume is dropping, I'm kinda digging the smoothie idea.

Oh, my god, how in sweet baby Jesus' name did I forget peanut butter?

Cashew butter, yep... almond butter... I have some SUNFLOWER SEED butter I found someplace and it is DEEE-lish-uss...

Those Boca chicken patty things do nothing for me. You can have 'em all.

I'll use the burger crumbles in green chile stew or something if I'm cooking which is pretty rare...

I have a mother of a job that eats up every minute of my time... I know I shouldn't let it but it's just murderous hours I put in... SP has forced me to address how LITTLE time I was giving myself in the way of exercise... I KNEW I wasn't getting any sleep...

but I have been MUCH better about making time to exercise since I've been here...

because I'm motivated to get my fat butt back into my clothes, NOT because it's GOOD for me...

(Ya think all the motivational stuff they keep making me read for spark points is gonna seep into the cracks in my brain one of these days?)

In any case... I try to eat local when I can and they do have pretty good peaches and apples in Mooville... I'm always sad when the peaches are over...

this year the Honey Crisp apples came in early and HUGE... but both of them are long gone now and I'm left with a fridge full of Granny Smiths and Fujis... pretty good but those Honey Crisps... dude, right off the tree... they'll make you wanna slap your mama (as we used to say in the colorful colloquial South).

What are yinz guys eating fresh out there?

It IS good that you eat meat... woll. Not for the guys you're eating but to get the opposite view on how we approach the week of vegan eating!!... Sorry. We gotta work some comedic tension in here...

MY shopping list is so boring...

I am this incredible creature of habit which is why I think I'm having so little trouble with the food plan now that I've done it for a couple of months...

I truly am like a plough horse... you just throw the harness on me and I'll go around in a circle for years...

I eat about the same thing just about every day...

This time of year my available fruit of choice is apples that I can get from the orchards around Mooville for $8 a half bushel. Yeah, I know.

There’s also a buncha Amish food outlets that I've already bored people to bits with in my blogs where I can pick up cans of chickpeas for, like 20 cents a piece... 2/$1 whole wheat Thomas' mini-bagels or English muffins... cream cheese blocks at 3/$1... I bought a 5 lb tub of sour cream a coupla weeks ago for $1.99...

I know...

So... my food diaries look EXACTLY the same from day to day... and it doesn’t bother me AT ALL...

What I buy is broccoli, cauliflower, green peppers, cucumbers, celery and lettuce... I've got an Aldi's around the corner form my office that sells 1# bags of iceberg salad mix for 99 cents and sometimes they order too much and then they're 2 or 3 for a dollar... I know.

So, I'm boring AND cheap.

Breakfast is a half a whole wheat bagel with a T. of cream cheese and a half apple.

Lunch is a hard boiled egg or some celery and cauliflower... I’ll eat a half bag of microwave pop corn once in a great while (Amish grocery: 6 bags for $1... I know...)

Dinner is steamed broccoli and cauliflower tossed with a quarter cup of cheese (Amish grocery: 5# grated cheddar - $3.99... I know)... then 2 T. of sour cream for dressing tossed with lettuce and green peppers and cucumbers... eat up and call it a day.

For vegan week, I just substitute soy sauce for the sour cream... leave out the eggs and cheese and add some tofu if I can stand it...

See?

Boring.

You didn't realize I eat meat during omni week? See? We're the perfect team -- best of both worlds.

Actually, it's not too hard to flip back and forth, and a LOT of the clean eating habits took over, fast!

I think part of the reason is because vegan eating purifies your tastes, and it does so really fast! I'm so much more excited about food now. Simpler things taste better to me. I think all the processed stuff, sodium, fast food, all of that, I think it shorts out your tastebuds. My own theory. Hee.

I like almond milk as the substitute for milk - I only drink organic every once in a while, mostly, it is almond milk. Closest in taste to dairy milk I think.

The only 'meat substitute' I eat during vegan week is Boca Chik'n patties - I heat one, cut a slice of whole wheat bread in half, miracle whip and spinach. Those taste like the cheapie chicken patties I used to like, so my brain thinks it is getting junk food!

You can do anything for a week (who is this mark guy you keep mentioning?). I'm never without anything so long that I get bored with what I CAN eat - that has helped me a lot.

I always feel 'lighter' too, almost in the brain and spirit. It's kinda weird. The first few times I did vegan week, it functioned as an obvious 'cleanse', but my body is more used to it now. And I eat pretty darn well during omni week too.

If I get a craving, it is usually for cheese or eggs. And I soothe myself by making a 'date' on Sunday for whatever it is I'm wanting. Then I have the whole rest of the week to get excited about it!

Wanna post a grocery list? Show me yours and I'll show you mine...

Here I am!

I have been lacto-vegetarian for going on 20 years... I started eating eggs again about 10 years ago ONCE in a while when I don't think about it too much... going vegan is something I have always wanted to do but just never thought I could live without dairy products...

Three months ago I found SP... a month ago I found Steph/GEMGODDESS and she had this BRILLIANT idea... I didn't have to live without dairy products... I only had to do without them for a week.

I can do ALMOST anything for a week. God knows, I dated Mark Ellison for a week. Anyone who knows THAT guy knows what a hardship a week of dating him is... vegan week was millions of times easier than that.

I am offering a solicited testimonial that if you are a vegetarian NOW, going vegan for a week WILL NOT KILL YOU.

Really. It was pretty easy. True story.

If you eat animal products as a matter of course, I can't help you... we will need to find another subject as a control...

We're gonna be doing this again in a week...

so anyone wants to come with...

THIS is the place.

So I'm a flexitarian - about six months ago I was overeating, determined I was eating for comfort, and decided to go vegetarian for a week...if I was going to chew 18 hours a day, it was going to be on fruits and veggies!

I did it, tried it a few weeks here or there, then decided there was too much 'cheating' available to me as a vegetarian, so I tried a vegan diet for a week. Bingo. Much harder to cheat. I do about 50% raw and organic too.

I have been doing one week on ('Vegan Week') and one week off ('Omni Week') for four months now, before I even joined sparkpeople. I limit my calories to the bottom of my range during Vegan Week, and allow the top of my range during Omni Week. I think this works to keep my metabolism from getting bored! A lot of my dietary vegan habits have spilled over to become all-the-time habits.

This past week, I had a sparkpal (stlrzgrrl) who tried it with me (front and center, Tracey!), and we wanted a place to talk about it, feel free to join in.
