i wear asics now but was in a saucony for a while. my best advice is to go to a local running store... fleet feet is huge in the city, the last one i went to in hoffman estates i think it was... dont know the town over there... but they had a great selection, the girl watched me walk to tell me what kind of shoe would be best and they had a long hallway so i could do 'test runs' in each to compare. So far, i LOVE my new shoes, much better than the ones i was in! good luck!

I'd like to put a question out to my runner friends. Is there any particular brand of shoe that you swear by? I asked my doctor and he highly recommended men's gym shoes. He said his wife is a runner and finds that not only do you get more life out of the shoe (they are made better) but they are a little roomier. He gave me recommendations based on the shape of my foot. I need to get some shoes soon because I will be out of this surgical boot in another week or two and I know I'll need soft sole shoes. I'd be happy to share the brands of shoes the doctor gave me (he is a podiatrist) but I also wondered if you any of you had a favorite. I can tell you I don't like reebooks or nikes and my son who is also a runner (a real one) doesn't care for those brands either. Any advice would be welcome. Lynn, you know you are my hero. You are the one who got me going!

Doctor told me not to even think about starting to run for a couple of months. He also told me to expect swelling on my foot for up to 6 months. I think I am gonna wait to sign up. I don't want to push it and although I have every intention of getting back in shape asap I don't want to put any stress on myself.

i would err on the side of caution for that one, see how you are recovering, then find out if there are still spots open... if you feel confident, go for it - even if you might end up being out the reg. fee... im a bit frugal tho... :)

If anyone is still reading these...My daughter and I have thought about doing this. However, I am having foot surgery Jan. 8th and I really don't know what the recovery period is. I'll be wearing a boot for 6 weeks but as soon as I get the okay I'll be running again. I am up to 6.5 miles -- but let me say that I don't do that much all the time. I try and run 3 to 4 times a week for an average of 3 miles just because I do have a job, family, lol. Anyway after I talk to my doc to see if this is a realistic goal I may join the fun too.

That sounds great! I am going to wait until after the race on Thursday to actually register for the Race to Wrigley, though. Just want to see how it "feels". But, it definitely sounds like a plan!

Yup, we go and meet at Wrigley, and run the race. First one through the chute stays and cheers on the next, who joins to cheer through the next one, etc. Wouldn't that be fun? And it doesn't matter if it DOES take an hour!! This year I hope to get a shirt that actually fits...

Oh, wow! I know I should just suck it up and register. I've been at this jogging thing for a while now, and although I haven't actually run more than 2.6 miles at one time... I sure think I should be able to.. mind over matter at this point. One of my friends is a marathoner, and she seemed to think the only way to get over my "mental block" is to just sign up and go do it. I'm just SOOOOOO slow, and it might take me an hour to finish... but I know I should just DO IT!
My mom and I are going to do a 5K charity run/walk on the morning of Thanksgiving. She's been doing some intervals of running and walking, and wants to try to run some of it, so that might be just my speed, for the first time out. :)

Dani, the race was in late April on a Saturday. I drove in pretty darn early so got a parking place right near Wrigley. The streets along the race course were all closed to parking, so the residents all had to move to alternate sites, too. The date is April 24, 2010.

Hi friends...sorry so..AWOL? Just received an email from the race planners:
Hello all 2009 Race to Wrigley participants,
I know baseball season just ended, but we are already preparing for the 2010 Race to Wrigley. Registration is now open for 2010 and we will have a race limit of 7,000 runners, so sign up early to reserve your spot ahead of time. For more information on the event, go to www.chicagoevents.com
I'm planning to do this race again. It was great fun, even with no one there that I knew. Hopefully the weather will be a bit better than the rain we had at the end of the race last year. Anyone interested??
