Hi. I was newly diagnosed April 16th. Funny how I remember the date. I thought I started out good with my eating, but my #'s were higher than they had been on the last two days. 122 and 127. I did have rice yesterday, but thought I had my carbs low enough yesterday. Am I going to have to never eat rice again? Guess that's my problem. I hate the idea I'm giving things up for good. I see a diabetic nurse today, then make appt to see a diabetic dietician. I'm hoping I learn more than I've found online. When u mentioned a friend losing her toes, I became fearful of the future. I'm more determined to make this all better. Good luck to u. Hope to see u on the messages again.

slowly but surely, it will happen

I think I was diagnosed also at about 2003, I was so scared and upset..
I do love sweets but, I just eat a small square of dark chocolate as my sweet. I did eat a doughnut yesterday but, I don't do that everyday.. my A1C is about 5.7 I think so that is very good.

I believe walking or jumping rope, moving is very important....don't just sit. It is a huge challenge for all of us. Watch what you put in your mouth it should be a vegetable or a fruit, no white rice or white tortilla. emoticon

I was diagnosed Type 2 in fall 2003. It's a good idea to test intermittently; when I first started testing, I tested before I ate and 2 hours after to see the effects the food I ate had on my sugars. The doctor prescribed me boxes of 120 strips (which, as you have found, are the most expensive part of monitoring - you can get glucometers free for gosh sake!). Insurance pays for my strips, so if you have insurance, have your doctor prescribe you as many in a month as they can. Since I don't test as frequently anymore, I have a stash of strips in case I have to use them more for illness or when I feel "off".
I think you will find a pattern of foods and eating habits when you start looking at your testing results. Did your doctor refer you to a class or dietitian? That helped me out a lot - to gauge how much I was eating (particularly carbs) and to portion out my meals in a day - I had never been much of a grazer, but had to learn in order to keep my sugars level. After nearly 10 years i FINALLY lost some weight which has improved my sugars as well. Two key things - watching what you eat and exercise, exercise exercise! Even a 10 min walk helps blood sugars; I found this out by testing after I had "overdone" and walked to find my sugars lowered by many points.
Diabetes can be difficult but it is controllable. Some days are still harder than others as I love sweets but I recognize the (ill) effects on me now. A coworker friend is a year older than I and has already lost her toes on one foot. I don't want that for me - or anyone for that matter, so if I can help make others aware, I am happy to do so. My personal best last year was an A1c of 5.9% - nearly normal sugars.
Check in when you can; I am new to this board and would love to connect with others. This is a life-long challenge for all of us.

Hello everyone. So I was just officially diagnosed as type 2 diabetic in the past week, and I'm still trying to sort everything out and get organized to manage this properly. One thing the doctor recommended is I test my blood sugar at least intermittently. I was provided with a starter blood testing kit, but I want to test fairly regularly for at least the first few months to understand what food choices, exercise/lack of exercise, etc. are doing to my blood sugar. I quickly realized I need to go ahead and buy more test strips. Then I learned how insanely expensive the test strips are. $120 for a box of 100 strips?! That would only last someone who tests 9 times/day about 11 days, and over a year would amount to almost $4000!!! Do people really pay that much, or does insurance cover the test strips? I did shop around, and you can purchase the test strips for about half the cost through many online vendors... but still.

I gave into temptation and had some Special K Blueberry cereal. Not the worst thing for me but I could have done without it.

Sorry I am not too talkative right now but I manage a tax office and it is the busiest time of the year. Hopefully I will do better after the mad rush is over. My sugars are out of control and I am hoping to get them n line soon. I found a new diet for diabetics and am going to try it after it slows down. I hope to talk to you soon.

This has got to be one of the quietest teams I've been on. I was hoping to get people talking and maybe moving in the right direction(though not doing so well myself there). Doesn't seem to be much interest here.

I use to walk 90 min a day but something happened and then we moved and I've not walked much. I have a mini tram with a workout video I've been trying to get myself to do. I do a few of the strength exercises that are listed here on sparkpeople. I tend to either eat right or exercise and can't seem to do both on the same day.

The winter cold is NOT motivating me to get moving so I'm going to have to motivate myself. We should bump that 5 min challenge to 10 min.

I want to thank you for getting me to think more about my problem (this stupid disease). If I could ever figure it out it would be a miracle. Some times I seem to figure it out and things go well and then it all goes wrong.

My sugars have been mostly in the 200's lately. Then I go to work (about 11 hours a day) in a tax office with all the stress and it goes down. I thought stress was supposed to be bad for you.

Exercise is not my favorite thing to do. Let's be honest - I hate it. I was never good at it. Walking with a friend is about the only thing that I really enjoy. What kind of execise do you do? Maybe we could challange each other. I liked your challange the other week to do just 5 minutes. I tried to respond but somehow it didn't post. Hopefully this time will be better.

Bye for now.

Well, I tested my glucose this afternoon and it was a lovely 233. That might explain why I feel a bit tired and a lot cranky.

This is a very quiet team for the number of people on here. I guess it's silent like this disease that will silently take our organs and kill us if we don't pay attention.

Ya know, I don't find that very motivating. In fact, some days it just makes me angry.

I didn't do so well on my eating and exercise last week and not off to a very good start today either.

I hope you all are doing better. Please check in an let us know how you are doing-good or bad.
