This page on the AT Conservancy site lists several (all?) books related to the AT. I didn't check to see if they are all available in their store or not. If they are not there, they're probably all available on Amazon.

I think I think I mentioned this alrewady, but the library has a great selection and they can get in books from other ones.

The possibilities always outnumber the problems.

Debbie, how was Hike Your Own Hike? I was eyeballing it on Amazon! Almost got it, but my place is a wreck, I don't even know where my Kindle is!

I just bought these books in paperback:

A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail - Bill Bryson (I've had this one recommended to me more than once, so I figured why not? It was only $0.10 + S&H.)

Just Passin' Thru: A Vintage Store, the Appalachian Trail, and a Cast of Unforgettable Characters - Winton Porter (Sounds funny! About a shopkeeper & all the people that he meets along the trail.)

Long-Distance Hiking: Lessons from the Appalachian Trail - Roland Muese (Lots of statistics and survey info from several people who hiked the AT! Sounds neat. My kind of book.)

Got all books in Very Good, Like New, and New condition for under $18 after S&H! emoticon

I hope to become a certified personal trainer someday!

I haven't check our library for AT books yet, but will when we go next week!...I have the book, 'Just Passing Through'....on my NOOK for PC application...haven't had a chance to start it yet as I have spent all week catching up writing to meet deadlines and nursing my very sick dog ( who thankfully seems to be recovering!) ....

Sounds like you found some great reading Ruby!

Hey, I checked out "Skywalker" from the library! Also "Once Upon a Climb: One Man's Journey on the Appalachian Trail" by James Richardson, "2000 Miles on the Appalachian Trail" by Donald J. Fortunato (very neat photos), and "In Beauty May She Walk: Hiking the Appalachian Trail at 60" by Leslie Mass. I haven't read any of them yet! There were so many books to choose from, but these are the four that seemed like they'd be the most enjoyable. Have you looked for AT books from your library? A lot of them fell under 796.5 & 917.504 in the Dewey Decimal Classification.

Cindy - the Canyon Solitude sounds good....I'm currently reading "Rethinking Life on the Appalachian Trail" which I have on the Nook app. It is about a guy's 2008 thru-hike and how he spent the time comparing trail lessons to life lessons...very good thus far he has a Trail Journal under " Rethinker 2008".....I started it then got the book after reading the book preview and seeing that he used his original trail journal as an outline but then added his life reflections and background stories....

If you are interested, when you are ready for some new reading material - I'll loan you my ebook of this. ( Did you know you can do that with Nook books?) ....you can borrow it for 2 weeks I think ..... I'll be finished with it probably by the weekend. Only reason I'm not done with it yet is because WORK interferred and I've had writing deadlines to meet! Submitted the last of my writing projects a few minutes ago so going to spend the evening catching up on TrailJournals and reading more of this book....

An ebook is usually cheaper than a traditional book and no postage!

LOTS of books to choose from and so far I've enjoyed every one I've read. Not sure if anyone is interested in books on subjects other than the AT, but if so I have one suggestion. I read a book a few years ago called "Canyon Solitude" by Patricia McCairen. It's about her solo rafting trip through the Grand Canyon. It's another one of my favorite books. She is a remarkable and brave woman and well worth the read if you think that is something you would enjoy.

emoticon Yes, it was really good, but OMG some of the things she experienced!!!! ....I probably would have finished it before bed last night if I had been able to curl up on the sofa with it...LOL. Not reading in Trail Journals (yet) today as I have 4 assignments due by 3 PM Wed....so need to get writing done. But later tonight, I'll 'hit the trails' and catch up on the journals I'm following!....went out and fed the pair of mallards that has been hanging around our dock just a little while ago. There is also now a pair of canadian geese checking us out, but they haven't joined the ducks in mooching handouts yet. Geese are usually more timid than ducks. Since they are so much bigger, you would think it was the other way around.

Well, need to fix myself a protein shake and grab a piece of fruit for lunch and get back to work! Will check back in later!

OMG! I can't believe you already finished the book. It is a hard book to put down though. She really had some crazy experiences, some that would be wonderful to experience, others definitely not! I'm taking my Nook to work tonight and hoping for a "quiet" night, but will probably be busy. It's supposed to be a beautiful sunny and warm day here, which for some reason seems to bring out the worst in people and they end up in jail.

Spent a long time yesterday on the phone with Terrie. Her and Louanne are laughing about me already starting to pack for vacation. Just want to make sure I don't forget anything :-)

Now to read some updates in Trail Journals on the hikers I'm following. Have a great day!

Yay! Glad it's working. Only Barnes & Noble e-books are compatible with the Nook, unfortunately emoticon I would love to have a Kindle because Amazon has a larger selection of books, but the Nook was given to me so for now I'll keep using it. I still really like it though.

If they're showing up in your library, they must already be downloaded. At least that's the way my Nook is; doesn't show up until I turn the Wi-Fi on and then it automatically downloads. I'm not sure how it works on a computer. You may have to try to download button first, or try the read button. I just highlight the book I want and click the circle (go) button and it automatically opens. Hope it works for you.

WooHoo! I love my Nook.

I've read Trail Ways, Path Wise and enjoyed it, mostly! Loving the southwest as I do, I wish I could hike the CDT. Unfortunately, it's much tougher than the AT for many reasons, among them the trail is not as clear as the AT and often includes road walking, way less traveled than the AT and water is pretty scarce in some areas. Anyway, the book is very interesting, but long. It could have been about half as many pages and I believe would have been a much better book. The author is a coach for a squash team, and spends a lot of time talking about the game of squash, much more than I ever cared to know. If you like this game, you'll enjoy those parts. As for me, I found myself skipping over large portions of the book until the game talk ended. Other than that, I really liked the book. emoticon

Haven't read White Blaze Fever yet, but that's on my "to read" list.

Finding Odyssa is one of my favorites!

Enjoy!

Cindy

Cindy - I think you'll love it! I read it in like 3 days! Terry was 60 I believe when she completed that thru hike. I actually was reading her trail journal from that hike and someone mentioned she had written a book, or maybe she mentioned it in an update at the end of her online journal. A lot of it is original journal entries but I loved being able to just settle in and read it from beginning to end.

Ramona, Becoming Odyssa is a fantastic book if you like reading about the AT. Debbie, I went online after reading your post and bought Footpath My Ass and downloaded it to my Nook. I'll start reading that tonight. Yay!

I love to read these also. One of my favorites is Becoming Odyssa by Jennifer Davis. I've also read A Walk for Sunshine (Jeff Alt), Three Hundred Zeros (Dennis Blanchard), AWOL on the Appalachian Trail (David Miller) and of course the popular A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson.

Thanks for the post. I'm going to Amazon to check on these others you've read.

emoticon I love reading everything and anything I can about the AT!...What are some books you have read?

Here are the ones on my shelf which I have read and re-read several times....

The Appalachian Trail Backpacker: Trail-proven advise for hikes of any length. - Victoria and Frank Logue

Walking the Appalachian Trail, by Larry Luxenberg

Skywalker: Close Encounters on the Appalachian Tail by Bill Walker

Footpath My Ass,- and other observations made by a middle-aged woman hiking the Appalachian Trail. By Terry Croteau 'Bluebird'.

The book by Terry Croteau is the latest and I actually found her Facebook page! Sent her a note and told her how much I enjoyed her book about her Thru-hike and she added me to her friends. I got a email on Facebook from her encouraging me to make a Thru-Hike a reality! She is planning another Thru-hike at the age of 67...

What are YOU reading about the AT?
