I found it impossible to give the mountain goats space. They have no natural predators, aren't afraid of humans at all, and would just walk up and peer in my tent or block the path I was on staring at me. Even when I was between the adults and their young, they would just stare at me with vague interest, relaxed and chewing...

I had never thought about keeping your backpack between you and the bear. All the more reason to have a backpack in the first place!
Good advice on all accounts. I give all animals a wide space - don't want them ever to feel threatened by me.

My two favorite pieces of safety advice for dealing with large animals:
(1) if attacked by a mountain lion, fight back. I guess I get it that my odds are better if I fight back than if I just present my neck to her, but it's hard to believe they're MUCH better
(2) if a bear tries to roll you, just keep rolling so that you always end up with your backpack between you and the bear. This would never have occurred to me if I hadn't seen it in the required safety video, but it's brilliant in its simplicity.

Happily, the bears and mountain lions and I managed to give each other lots of space.

Welcome GREBJACK! Congratulations on all your accomplishments! Well done!

Always remember trail safety when you're out there and yes there are sometimes risks that aren't worth taking. Common sense prevails and don't ever do something that could put you at a dangerous risk, just because it's a "once in a lifetime" chance. I've seen people do crazy things without thinking of the risks to themselves or others.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, DOUGDC. I have to psych myself up again. This weekend has been sunny but cool, which isn't the best beach weather but made for a great afternoon of zip-lining with co-workers yesterday.

Hope others on the team are enjoying the longer days.

I had an interesting weekend despite no beach. I'd gone to a speed dating event the weekend before, so I had three dates! An outing with fun co-workers, my first u-pick trip of the growing season (rhubarb!), a couple satisfying training runs, a visit with my ex-husband who is still a close friend, and a contra dance marathon (I only stayed a couple of hours).

This year is my first bikini since childhood and I'd finally psyched myself up to wear it in public and then the weather didn't cooperate...

@DougDC thanks! Today's the first day I've been able to wear my shoes all day and we both enjoyed it! It feels good to be out walking once more. The humidity is back! This morning early it was 72 with a heat index of 94 - not a good start to the day. Wasn't too bad when the clouds covered the sun but with that sun bearing down it didn't feel too great. Oh well, my dog and I endured on several walks today - they were a little longer than has been usual for us. So looking forward to getting out with my brother and getting him back into walking and hiking again. Not sure where all we'll go this year but I'm looking forward to at least walking some of the local trails in his area and around the lake. Already looking forward to September and all the beach walking! I've been looking at fitness trackers - my son was showing me several Monday while we were out. So I'm not sure what I'll go with. I'm thinking about a bracelet style but don't know yet.

@GREBJACK - did you have anything fun going on over the weekend? Mine was just the usual boring weekend stuff.

Happy walking & hiking y'all

@LadyVolsFan - sounds like a real challenging recovery. Great you can get out at least a little with the dog. I'm sure both of you enjoy the exercise and miss your usual routine. Best wishes for the holiday, and hope you're feeling up to more enjoyable walks soon.

Well we went from the cooler than normal spring to summery weather in just a day or two. Typical for here. My dog & I have been doing later in the day walks and they're shorter due to my feet and her being 12 years old. We've been trying to catch another glimpse at the baby foxes and adults that live down the street. The fox family marched up the street the other night and we just stopped and watched them and when they got closer turned around so they could continue their journey.
I hope everyone's having a great week.

Oh my feet are killing me. I'll be so glad for everything to heal up - the top of my foot (now) and my heels (the right one is the worst and it's still super sensitive).

My dog isn't happy because we've only been going on short walks maybe a couple times a day. I wish I could manage longer ones right now because it's just been perfect. Unfortunately I pushed my luck yesterday on one walk and when I got up this more and put on the only shoes I can wear the top of my left foot hurt so bad I can barely walk. So I've been doing the barefoot number for now until walking time, which I keep putting off - the thunder shower helped with the delays but my dog deserves better than this so I'll have to take her sooner or later for at least a short walk.

Hope everyone has a great weekend. Happy Mothers Day to all the Moms out there.

Thanks! It seems like it's taking forever to feel better. I know I have to let my back heal on it's own time but I get impatient. I'm leaving to visit my brother in NE TN on June 7th and this has put a damper on my walking, that and my asthma. Our visits are tons of walking so I need to get moving more but I have to be patient.

I'm sorry to hear that remodel is preventing your AT through hike. That's really a bummer. I hope things get worked out so you can do the through hike soon as practical and weather allows.

Tell me about it, LADYVOLSFAN1954. Outside circumstances get in the way of doing things you enjoy. In my case an endless home remodel has me captured and is preventing an AT through-hike attempt this year. So I'll be riding my bike more and hiking some, locally. It'll all work out one dau.

Best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery!

Having a slow go at the walking this month. I hurt my back three weeks ago and it's finally feeling better. Now my asthma and allergies are in full swing due to the mowing season again. I can't win! Can't wait to leave on vacation June 7th! Hopefully I'll get some real hiking in then.

Sorry for my absence but I've been having some health issues and just got out of the hospital Tuesday just after noon before our wonderful ice storm hike - thankfully we only got 1/3 inch of ice on top of our 6+ inches of snow. I have a bunch of appointments in the coming weeks so please bear with me.
Keep on hiking. Stay warm, stay safe.

I know! I've been thinking about this summer too! I'm so looking forward to some more hiking. My brother's found a good walking trail near where he lives so he's looking forward to introducing me to it this summer. I can't wait! Anyone got any plans made yet?

Sorry I've been missing in action for a while here. I haven't been on SparkPeople.com as much since I got home the last day of September. I've been all out of sorts and trying to deal with some issues that this hasn't been on my priorities. For that I apologize.

Great info on what to carry in your backpack - thanks!
Blowing Rock, NC is a beautiful area. I've been to Blowing Rock but never done any hiking there.
I got home late Friday night from an interesting month with my brother. We did some hiking in the Smoky Mountains. I couldn't interest my brother in any hikes other than to waterfalls though. We did manage three separate hikes: Big Creek area, Deep Creek area and in the area around Cades Cove. Plus up on Roan Mountain at the Rhododendron Gardens plus walking around the rhododendron festival.
Thanks for the tips on hiking in the heat. I could have used them last summer because it was so much hotter than this years hiking. Will be useful in the future though!
Happy trails!
Ramona

Happy Mother's Day to all our moms. What screwy weather we're having here in May. I just got notification on my cell phone that we've got a frost advisory out for tonight. It's much colder than it has been. Gone from shorts to sweats in one day. Will have to wear a jacket when I walk my dog later. Geez...make up your mind Mother Nature. Hope everyone's having a great weekend!

Rainy days...just hate them because I don't get out and walk. Tried a walk the other day and got drenched. Not a fun thing. My dog wasn't too thrilled either. So I guess today will be alternate workouts like riding my recumbent exercise bike that I got yesterday. So far I've made 20 minutes on it and improvement over yesterday's 10 minutes. Feeling great though. Hope everyone has a fantastic weekend!

Happy May Day!
Okay y'all I need some advice about shoes. Mine have just about bit the dust and I got a pair just so I've have a pair when mine are gone until I can find a new pair. They feel good but after a while I just have to get out of them like NOW and my feet hurt so bad afterwards. It could all be related to the plantar facisiis (spelled wrong I know). I've been looking online and in stores for shoes but so far haven't found anything I really like.
So here's my story - I'm diabetic and am looking to get special inserts for my shoes so I guess my shoes would have to have removable inserts. I wear either a 10 1/2 or 11 wide, depending on the shoe and how they run. I have large heel spurs on both feet. I can't stand any shoe that touches my ankles - high sensitivity in that area probably from my fibromyalgia. I walk up to 5 miles a day right now. My walking surfaces vary alot here in town. Old 50 year old concrete (or older), newer concrete, black topped highways, gravel roads, dirt paths, rocky areas, oiled rock roads, grassy areas and places where the surfaces are all broken up. Then of course I go hiking on the AT and in the Smoky Mountains when I'm down there. So I need something that has cushioning and comfort no matter where I'm walking. I know it's a lot but if anyone can give me ideas of what to look for I would GREATLY appreciate it.Oh yeah, I have screws in my left knee and arthritis in my hips, knees, feet, ankles or anywhere else you can get it. I leave on vacation June 9th so I'd like to get them within the next few weeks so I have a chance to get used to them. Thanks
Ramona

Spring has finally gotten here. We had 85 degrees on Wednesday then a cold front and thunderstorms. I've heard from my friends all over the US and some had 5+ inches of snow, some had ice, some had tornadoes with this front. It was in the 40s on Thursday. Today it's back up to 59 right now. Supposed to be in the mid 60s so I hope so, it's just this crazy north wind that chills you.
I had some severe thigh muscle cramps Thursday - brought me to the floor literally. I had to call for help. Today my thigh muscles are really hurting. I'll try to get my daily walk in later on. I didn't make it out Thursday. I'm trying to rack up my miles but this week has been a bust.
Hope you have a great weekend!

Happy last day of winter! The wintry weather's still going to be with us for a while but tomorrow's the official first day of spring. Enjoy the sunshine and (hopefully) warmer temps out. I've been bouncing off the walls today. I feel great. I've had a migraine for a week now and then the other night it stormed all night long - my dog's terrified of storms so that didn't help. Finally broke down and took the pain meds (the ones I only take if nothing else works) and slept wonderfully. I woke up feeling great. I took two short walks and two regular walks with my dog. I could walk more but it's dark and the wild animals are starting to prowl around. I've done a little dancing around the house trying to work off some of this energy. Feel my motivation returning...the spark has been fanned

Kizzy take care & I hope things work out for you.

Hey everyone - how's it going? Are you able to add more miles to your totals or has the winter weather knocked you for a loop? I am so so ready for warmer weather! This cold is getting to me really bad this year. I'm so tired of being cold all the time. The worse thing is even though the house is warm, the darn toilet seat is so cold. Funny thing is it's right across from the heating vent. Shocks my system all the time. Taking fluid pills puts me on it a whole lot and I'm miserable from it.
Today we had a wintry mix and some awful winds. It's still blowing and the temperatures continue to drop. I braved it all after the wintry mix stopped and sun came out but darn did I get cold. My dog loved it but I hated it.
Have a great week y'all! Catch ya later.

Hi all,

I have a lot of personal stuff going on right now and struggling with things. Taking some time for me and hubby so not on the internet much to check in. As things shake out I'll try to get back on for more support to everyone.

Keep up the good work

Hey y'all! Well, we're moving into the last week of February already! I can't believe Friday's March 1st. Where has this year gone? It's flying by!
Just got back from a 92 minute walk with my dog. It's a gorgeous day outside but the wind's still cold. We did a little jogging too so that was different. It's hard to jog with a dog on a leash - at least ways her - because she stops so suddenly when she smells something. It's like wham! put on the brakes.
I hope everyone's doing ok. Have a fantastic week!

Hello everyone!

Kizzy sounds like you're busy busy busy. I got so cold yesterday walking my dog. I need to get off my butt and walk her now but I keep putting it off. I'll do it in a little while.

Tomorrow we have a winter weather advisory out for rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow. The kind of mess that just ruins your day. I know there are alot of people getting hit today. So if you're in this mess - stay safe, stay warm.

Later on y'all!

Hi all,

Ramona- we'll get through this together. Let's just keep push forward and we will get past this yo-yo and move down a little bit more this year. I've had ticks on my dogs in the winter in Maine if it's an open winter and no snow. Going south they have frontline or revolution on all the time now. I hate the ticks, even with prevention I've picked them off the dog and cat.

Pushing at my gym still so not much walking else wise. I still hope to get in an actual hike in April on the AT. Some crazy things going on at work so not planning anything till I see how that all plays out. Just a little extra stress on the plate right now.

Hubby away for a week so my dog will depend on me for his walks. That will give me a little extra walking in. When hubby's here they enjoy their walk while I'm at the gym. He's a little dog so I'm good at making excuses not to go...but....I will do it this week for a little more activity. Doing a lot of sewing for a craft fair and I tend to get in a slump where I just sew and don't get out of the chair for hours. Got to set the alarm so I'm up and walking every hr for at least 5 minutes.

Have a good week all. We can do this together

Kizzy

Hello y'all! How is everyone this week!

Hey Kizzy, I know the feeling...I have 8 to 10 lbs I keep gaining and losing. I'm trying to kick up the activity a bit to see if that helps. I haven't been this weight/size since about 1978 so I'm truly loving it right now.

My dog and I were going to take a walk but didn't get too far. We have a wind advisory out in advance of a cold front. Facing the wind, I'd take two steps forward and five steps back. Then with the wind to my back I'd nearly run. We made it for 21 minutes but that was it. Now the rain's started so looks like today is bust for walking.

night before last I got a huge tick off my dog. I told my Aunt and she said "in February? Ticks!" I said yup, sure enough. Screwy weather for sure.

Hi all,

Ramona - great job getting out there walking with your dog. Good exercise for you both. Hiking in the desert was definitely different than the Smokies or New England Mt's. Really glad I had the opportunity to do it. Someday I'd like to go back and explore a little more some other mts there to hike.

Struggling with my wt right now. Yo-yo effect. The traveling and life in general I've gotten off track and struggling to get back focused on the diet. I gained 1.4 pds while in Arizona. Went to my WW meeting but even there didn't get inspiration to push on. I'm on that cliff where everytime I reach this point I slip off and fall back into old habits. This is the lowest I've been in years, I feel good and suddenly I lose focus. I still have 20 pds to goal so I really need to focus. A little discouraged as I'm not down to the weight I'd hoped to be at this point. It's easier for me to diet while in FL away from all the stress of the office and family things, so not losing is getting me a little down. I'm still exercising at the Crossfit gym and see some improvement in some of the moves I couldn't do before. That's always a positive but I can't seem to get past the eating thing...craving everything in sight right now. I know I would be much more successful at the gym if I could get the weight off. We had to put our goals on the board at the gym and I had a goal of losing 20 pds by April, now I'm just hoping I can lose 10 and that seems daunting. Sorry about the rant, just a little down right now. Gotta pick myself up and just move forward.

Hope everyone has a fabulous week. Get out and get moving.

Kizzy

Hi everyone! I hope we've all been doing some walking/running/hiking lately. I'm still walking my dog, who turned 11 yesterday. She was a Valentine's baby. I've been forcing myself out in the cold, windy weather to walk her at least 30 minutes. On the good days we do a lot of walking which is great for both of us.
Kizzy, your hike sounds amazing. I bet that was different. The only hikes I've done are on Roan Mountain and in the Smoky Mountains so that would be interesting. I know the puppy & kitten were sure glad to see you again!
Take care everyone! Catch up with you later.

Hi everyone,

Back home to FL after a trip to Arizona with hubby for a conference. Did manage to get in a great hike while there. There was a mountain right behind the resort so we took 3 hrs and hiked it. Good challenging hike with fabulous views. Hiking in the dessert very different than I'm used to. No foliage to block views so you could see all the way up. Weather was very cool in the 40's so good hiking weather for that area. The trail had some steep sections with rock scrambles to get the heart racing a bit. Felt great to get out hiking!!

Ramona - how's the weather and things going. Still getting out with your dog? Checked out your spark page when I added you as a friend and WOW!!! you have done awesome with your weight loss. you can see such a change in your face. You rock it girl!!!

Off to unpack and organize things at home. Always a challenge when you're away. Fridge, floors and animals all need attention. Puppy and kitty were very happy to have us home. They do fine at the boarding facility but like us nothing is like home.

Kizzy, Sounds like you're really staying busy and doing alot of working out. Great job! I walked my dog today for 2.44 miles so that'll help. I did other walking but I only tracked the time since my "map my run" app doesn't do well in stores but it doesn't matter, the thing that matters is the walking. Have fun and enjoy yourself. I enjoyed the sunny 50 degree weather today. It felt like heaven out there compared to those 20 some odd degree days I walked. If my heel hadn't started hurting we would have walked more but that's ok.
Talk to everyone later. Have a great week.

Ramona- sounds like you're off to a good start. Great on your walking and pushing through the cold weather. That will really help you out with fighting off that hunger. Any time out walking is time you don't have for snacking.

Golfed today with DH. Nice day together. I was able to walk some too which I really like. Came home and did my mini home workout. Slowly making progress on my movements. I measure improvements by timing my "30 burpee's" and try to go a little faster each day. When I started I was just working on the movements, now working on increasing my time. Jumping rope and double unders I'm getting more consistant to get one at a time and now need to work on trying to string a few together. All a work in progress but nice I can see results and changes with the practice.

Monday - gym day. Never know what the workout will be other than I know it will kick my butt.

Have agreat week!

Kizzy,
Just got back from a 2.9 mile walk with my dog. Other than that darn cold north winds it felt great to be in the sunshine. I'm trying to get back in my groove again and increase my activity levels. So my fitness minutes are finally getting back up there again. The cold has my muscles really hurting lately but that's a typical winter thing. I know it's cool or cold just about everywhere. My Dad and youngest brother live in Edgewater, Florida so I keep up with their weather too.
My food craving was terrible last week. Unfortunately I gave in to it all week long and had disastrous results. So I'm really working hard this week to eat better. I made chili today and it's fairly well filling and gave me the needed energy for the walk with my dog. I may go for another one shortly.
Good luck on all your workouts. Have a great week!

Ramona - sounds like you're having some improvement in your activity. that's awesome. I know that feeling of being hungry. It is so hard to fight. I sometimes have cravings that make me think I'm hungry when I'm really just bored or wanting something bad. Maybe your medications are affecting that, making you feel hungry, some can do that. Might be worth talking with your Doc about it. I'm here for you.

Good day at the gym. Managed to do the workout doing a movement I haven't been able to do before. I was slower doing it but felt so good to finally after months to be able to get that even if it wasn't perfect.

Cool here in FL as I know it's all across the country. Not too cold to get out for a walk so I'll be heading out with my dog a little later to walk the block at the least. Going to the gym I don't walk as much these days --- get a good burn there.

Off to shower and to face the day.

Stay strong

Kizzy

Kizzy, just got back from a second walk with my dog - today's walks were 26 & 33 minutes long. That wind is so cold! We're under a winter weather advisory tonight. emoticon
I hope your knee and ankle get better soon. I'm feeling so much better than I have this month. I'm hoping that I can get back into my workouts better now. I'm still tired but not nearly as bad and I'm taking rest breaks to try to avoid getting so down and out. I haven't noticed any problems with my new meds since that first day so that's good news.
I'm having tons of problems with my diet. I am so darn hungry all the time. I take my time eating so I can register full, unfortunately that never happens. I stay hungry. I drink plenty of fluids so I'm not dehydrated - I just slosh when I walk emoticon but I'm still hungry no matter what or how much I eat. I plan snacks but they're not helping either. Maybe once I get to the grocery store and get some different food I'll do better.
I'm trying to up my fitness minutes to take care of the extra food I've consumed so it's a slow process. I had this same problem last winter too so it's nothing new. I'm trying to eat new and different things too so we'll see how it goes.
Keep moving, stay warm, stay safe and have a fantastic week!
Ramona

Ramona - any walking is a success. Changes in medication can really disrupt the body and how you feel. Hope things will settle in for you soon.

My ankle and knee were a little sore this am so I didn't go to the gym for a workout. I did do a short workout at home with 30 burpees, 20 boxjumps and some jumprope drills. Tomorrow I have Ladies golf and then back to the gym on Friday.

Struggling a little on my diet. Yesterday we were out with friends all day and I got into the snacks. I tried to avoid but didn't have the will power. Needed more low calorie snacks and fruit packed. I'll remember next time.

Great job Kizzy! Losing a size in your pants/shorts is one of those wonderful NSV (non-scale victories) I love! My dog loved the walk the other day. Unfortunately my foot has prevented any more of those wonderful walks as has the weather. We had severe thunderstorms last night. Thankfully we didn't have the tornado warnings like the surrounding counties did. Have several limbs down in the yard. My foot feels a little better today - I have been smearing on a thick layer of vaseline everyday and wearing two pair of socks. It's helped more than all those other things so I guess I'll just stick with it. My feet are looking better too.
This morning my dog and I took a quick walk - about 10 minutes and I've walked with Leslie Sansone for 15 minutes. Will fit in more things later. I'm going to look at some of the Youtube.com videos I have marked "watch later" and see what I've got there. Going to do some ST too if my shoulder/collar bone doesn't start acting up again.
I started new blood pressure medication yesterday. I normally take a combination drug Azor. Well, since Medicare won't pay for it I've been getting samples from the doctors office. Well, the drug reps haven't been there and I've been off it for two weeks. I had Norvasc which was one of the drugs so I was taking it. So finally after a week of going back & forth with the doctors office and drug store I got the new prescriptions. I'm now on Norvasc & Zestril. Yesterday was the first dose of the Zestril and I was just totally wiped out. I had zero energy and then my blood sugar dropped to 59 so I wasn't well at all. Today I'm feeling much better though.
Take care everyone! Catch ya later. If you're in the path of these storms STAY safe!

Ramona - glad you're on the way to recovery. Sounds like you've had quite a bumpy road. Great job getting out and walking with your dog for 1 1/2 hrs. That's super.

A friend told me about a book, Following Atticus which is about a man hiking with his small dog. I have got to read it where I love hiking with my dog. Baxters become a bit of a couch potato down south as I'm going to the gym and not walking as much this winter. DH takes him for short walks around the block but not the usual couple of miles of hiking he and I do in Maine during the summer. He's going to have to get in shape for this spring.

Diet is slowly getting back on track. I've finally lost the weight gain from Christmas and traveling home along with gain from the cruise we went on. I have set a goal to lose 15 pds before I go home to Maine in April. That's a pretty high goal for me as I generally don't lose more than 1 pd a week. Still I've got that number in my head and I'm going to try to reach that. If I can then that puts me within 5 pds of my goal. The gym has definitely helped with my appearance and how clothes fit. I'm down a size in pants and shorts even at the same weight. The muscle is leaner and lakes up less space so although I'm not lighter I'm leaner in size. I also know that muscle will help me burn more calories so pushing myself at the gym the best I can.

Anyone watching the biggest loser? I enjoy the show and watching their workouts helps me push through mine. I visualize Bob or Jillian hollaring at me to push harder and get going, lol.

Off for a day with DH and friends.

Hi Kizzy, glad to hear from you again! I think I'm finally on the road to recovery! January has been a total bust for me. Not happy with myself anyway because I've been gaining and losing the same 8 pounds since September! Spinning my wheels in the sand! I took my dog on two walks today - I think we walked about 1 1/2 hours total. That felt great even though it was only in the mid 40s with a wind chill from that darn North wind. I certainly enjoyed feeling the sun on my face. I'm glad your gym classes are going better. I've got to start getting serious about everything again. I've got weight to lose before I go to my brother's in June/July this year. I'm still hoping to do a short section hike or two on the AT. Probably up at Carvers Gap and maybe somewhere in the Smoky Mountains if things work out.
I've learned the hard way, this body can't handle a lot of things anymore. I fell at my Aunt's and that really got me down then I got bronchitis and have been down for the count. I think I've rested up now. I'm trying to go easier on myself right now. Plus my right foot is killing me - good old winter dry cracked skin on my heel and this year it's on the bottom of my heel too. Been using a medicated cream for diabetics with cracked dry skin. It's helping my left foot but it's no where near as bad. I guess I'll have to use that pain cream too because the right heel is hurting so bad.
Have fun everyone! Stay warm, stay safe and have a fantastic week!

Hi everyone,

Hope you are all staying warm. I know the cold is affecting most places.

Going to the gym and settling in well with the group now. It was a little different than my home gym but now feels better. I'm actually getting to know the other ladies there (they're all so much younger than me) and we chat before and after class now. I think they've accepted the older lady in their class. I've also gotten used to the trainers style and gaining from his way of teaching. Change is always hard but has taught me not to give in and others style is sometimes good even when you didn't like it at first.

Ramona how are you feeling. Hoping you're feeling better and have some better days.

No hiking for me right now. Concentrating on my gym stuff and trying to build muscle and strength that will help me when I can get out on the trail this Spring.

Happy Trails

HI all,

Working to get back on track this week. Traveling and family visiting for a week then off on a cruise has totally thrown my life into a tailspin. This week is all about getting back on track for me. Reclaiming the house after the kids visit. Washing all done, cleaning and now today to wash the floors and finish washing windows. I'll try to take time later to catch up on where everone is with the virtual hike miles.

This week I'm going to work on tracking my meals. Planning ahead, getting back into exercise routine. I have some workout goals I've set for my crossfit. There are skills I can't do so I'm going to practise those things: double under jump ropes, box jumps, burpees, pullups. They may take me the whole year to be able to do but I'm going to try a few every day to help me master these skills.

I'm hoping to get an actual hike on the AT in April. If all goes well I'm going to take a week to hike the GA section before heading back to Maine. I brought all my hiking gear back to FL after Christmas and will see how things play out for that. Keeping my fingers crossed I can actually do it.

Sorry about the missing hiker. I'll check whiteblaze.net to see if they have posted the information. That has lots of folks that monitor the trail.

I'll try to be better posting and supportive here.

Hey Kizzy! Things will straighten out.

Sorry y'all for not being here but I've been sick sick sick. Todays the first day in almost 10 days I've felt halfway decent. Had a bad case of doing too much (helping my Aunt move to an apt) then I got slammed. Bronchitis - really bad case. I fell and really did a number on my body - nothing was broken but these falls are hurting worse each time. I slept from last Sunday until Friday basically just getting up to eat (forgot to eat at all MOnday) and take more meds. Needless to say I'm bored but I get so tired so quickly. My dog is mad at me she hasn't had a walk all this time now it's rain & freezing rain today. I'm on antibiotics and trying to limit things to give myself time to heal up properly but it's driving me crazy! The pain from the fall is also helping keep me from doing too much, which is probably a really good thing right now.

I hope everyone's having a great new year - mine's been insane then trying to heal myself. Well take care. Sending ya'll hugs

Hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season.

Back in FL after a couple of weeks at home in Maine. Things were rather crazy so I didn't do well with my diet. I was hoping to just maintain or not gain too much while home and the traveling. Weight this am I was up 1.5 pds from when I left 2 weeks ago. I'm happy with that. All I ate and not watching things as well as I should only gaining 1.5 pds is a success for me.

Still getting organized and unpacking. I'll be back and more chatting in the next few days. Lets work together to meet our goals in 2013!!

Hi all,

Ramona - glad you got a computer for online access. Nothing more frustrating than losing that connection.

I'll be away for a bit as I'm traveling for the holidays. Hang tight everyone and we'll look to start strong the first of the year. Make good choices with holiday temptations. Thinking of you all and will be back chatting soon.

I'm back online again. My son generously gave me my old desktop computer back since my laptop died. So now he's computerless until he gets his new one but I told him he could use this one anytime.
I hope everyone has a fantastic week!

Ramona - take care of your back. It's hard to do anything when your back is sore. Rest, heat and anti-inflammatorys if you can take them. Hard but rest is what you need. Thinking of you.

You are right about a lot of young folks. At my home gym the trainers show new people that you support the others working out with you. No matter what your age, I've had young top athelets cheering me to finish there, but here in FL it seems the trainers haven't shown the members that spirit of family and support. They are all nice it's just not the same commradery. I've excepted that is just the way it is here at this gym and think of my workout buddies at home cheering me on.

Struggling a bit with eating. It's amazing how the scale can dictate how we feel. A disappointing number can throw me off my plan. I had a .2 loss last week and this week .6. I'm trying not to be discouraged at not seeing better losses on the scale. With DH at home I can concentrate totally on my diet and exercise but it's still hard not seeing better numbers.

Plan for this week - all meals planned, gym 4 days and to keep active around the house as much as I can.

Good luck with the work outs Kizzy. I'm sure it's hard not having your workout buddies. These days the young people don't care about anyone but theirselves. One day they'll be regretting it too.
After that work with my Aunt last Saturday, going grocery shopping with my son on Monday, helping my Aunt on Tuesday really got to me. Halfway through the errands with my Aunt I started having problems with my back and just getting into the car was beginning to be a challenge. Yesterday I tried to resume normal activities but by noon I was out in left field with the pain. It got so bad my son was concerned about me. Got my rice filled sock and heated it up and laid down on my side with it near by. Helped some, so I finally took my pain meds and reheated the sock and went to bed.
My back's better today, only because I haven't done anything much all day but rest. I've done two loads of laundry, fixed my son breakfast this morning, crocheted a little on the afghan and laid down most of the day to try and relax that back. Where I had to hit my back on the wall when I got choked last week was really really hurting yesterday. That's what did me in plus all that lifting and carrying stuff all over the place. Oh yeah and then Monday my son took down an old hospital bed and I helped him carry out pieces of it too.
Hope you have a great weekend - it's almost here. Take care. Catch y'all later on.

Checking in this morning after going to the gym. Had a good workout this morning. Sort of missing my regular workout buddies from home. The young folks here are nice but they don't offer support to each other during the workouts. Sort of push for myself and thats all that matters. Oh well, I'm not going to give up. Want to go home to Maine in the spring stronger, fitter and smaller. Also I know it will really help on the times I can get out and hike.

Hope everyone has a good day.

Ramona - you are sure busy. What a challenge to clean out a loved one's clothes. That's such a big project.

Hubby left yesterday so I'm alone with the dog and cat for a few weeks. I'll be driving back to Maine with the pets in a couple of weeks. For now I'm going to concentrate on myself, eating right and exercising. No excuses.

Have a great day everyone.

Kizzy,
Sounds like you're doing great on that goal. The cruise sounds like something fun for your family. I know you'll all enjoy it.

Not much going on here. It's a dreary day but at least it was 68 outside. We had rain off and on. Did manage a short walk. Yesterday I spent three hours with my Aunt cleaning out a closet. My late uncle's clothes - he had tons in this closet - I was just amazed. She's donating it all to a local church run thrift shop. I've already filled up the trunk of the car and we have a nice big pile sitting on the enclosed porch to take too. We still have a lot to do but it wore her out yesterday. The afghan is going well, it's almost there! Can't wait to get it done.

Have a great week y'all! Hugs

Hi all,

Ramona - sounds like your fingers are busy with afghans. I'm like you and start my Christmas projects last minute. This year we have chosen not to give gifts to our children but rather take them all on a cruise in January. They are adults so not like the same Christmas magic with young kids. I am just doing stockings.

It's been a busy week with hubby here. He leaves today and I can just focus on my diet and exercise. I have a couple weeks before driving back to Maine for the holidays. I want to try to drop 3 - 5 pds if I can. I won't go crazy about losing, it's just a goal I made the beginning of November to try to lose 10 pds before I returned for Christmas. I've lost 5.5 so looking to try to reach that goal.

It's a new week so lets all work hard to do the best we can.

Kizzy, Sounds like you're doing great! I need to get the exercise kicked up but have been so tired lately. Still trying to figure that out.
I can't believe Christmas is getting closer by the minute! I'm working on an afghan for my best friend for Christmas. It has to be done by Dec. 21st. I've been working on it as much as I can at night - until my hands just won't hold the crochet hook any longer. It's over 3/4 of the way done so I'm on the downhill side but I worry about it. That's what I get though for not even thinking about starting it until after the middle of October was long gone. One night I just decided to do it. I finished one I had started a while back this summer, it's going to my brother for Christmas. Then I made one this spring/summer for my son, who's enjoying it these cold nights. Then I started this one. I will be starting another once it's done too. Oh well, I enjoy it.
I'm hoping my weight holds steady through the 1st of the year. Once the holidays are over, then it'll be time to get totally serious again. I have a lot of holiday baking coming up because I make "goodie" plates for several family members and friends every year. My baking frenzy time! I'll just have to continue to log in all those bites of food and try to get my exercise going stronger.
Sounds like you're doing great! Catch y'all later.

Hi everyone,

Ramona - Sounds like you had a good time with family. The little things that went wrong you can laugh at later. Nice you had some fabulous memories and family tradition items to remind you of what Thanksgiving is really about - giving thanks and family. Don't beat yourself up on gain. A friend told me once that after a large weight loss our body's can sort of shut down for a bit to recoup and reconfigure what's going on. That may be where you're at both physically and mentally. Sometimes a little break is good, not off the charts eating everything in site, just a break from the diet being all your focus. Set some little goals for this next month and know that come January you'll be ready to look forward to a new year. For what ever reason that beginning of the year opens up hopes and new enthusiasm for us. emoticon

Back to the gym this morning. It was a hard workout but good after a long weekend. Felt very happy I was able to finish it. Everyone in my class is in their 20's so I'm definitely the old lady at 55. Still I'm there for me and I do as much as I can. It's definitely helping me on my weight loss and also my strength. I'm probably the most tone I've been since in high school. Now to get rid of the fat to see that muscle tone better, lol.

Hoping to take a week this next spring and hike the AT in Georgia. When I go home to ME for Christmas I will bring back my hiking gear. If all goes well I can drive up from FL to GA in April for 7 days. That would be a good start to my section hiking if it works out. Wish I could be saying I'd be doing a thru hike but that is not in the cards for me. Each step on the trail is one more towards my goal.

Have a great day everyone.

Kizzy, woohoo! on the weight loss!!! You're doing great!
Me? I'm up again. Its the old up and down thing. If I can maintain this weight until January 1st I will be happy. I'd be estatic if I could lose it but I'm just try to maintain and resist all the temptations around me.
Had Thanksgiving Dinner at my place this year. It was just me and my son and my 84 yr old aunt but we had more than enough to eat. I just couldn't get into the turkey this year. Maybe it's because it's in chunks - my 20 yr old son "carved" the turkey and when it didn't cooperate he got mad. Needless to say it wasn't a pretty sight. The only thing I enjoyed was the homemade yeast rolls and pumpkin pie. The green bean casserole was ok as were the sweet potatoes. I was trying to fix a homey Thanksgiving for my Aunt. This is her first Thanksgiving since her husband died Jan 31st. So I wanted it to be "familiar" for her. The hit was of course my Mom's Hot Rolls - she passed away in Jan 1983 but her memory lives on strong in the hot roll recipe she left me. Needless to say they are a requested item. My son decided to get "fancy" and make honey butter and the honey cinnamon butter (like at Texas Roadhouse) for the rolls, he even put the softened butter in a cookie cutter to shape it so it'd look pretty. We had a lot of fun Wednesday and Thursday preparing everything. We laughed so much so it was worth the couple pounds I gained.
Been arguing with my head - it's saying time to quit. I'm saying not on your life. I've still lost 68 pounds (not the 76 I had) and I'm not about to gain any more. I'm looking forward to January 1st and the new year with new goals.
In the mean time I'm still tracking every bite I take, even when the numbers make me cringe because they're over. I'm still walking my dog - like to have froze today! It was 37 and sunny, until I started walking then the sun went in and it got windier. I was bundled but still got really cold. We walked 44 minutes. I love the mapmyrun app on my phone so I know how far and how long I've walked. The miles aren't adding up very fast because my dog has been going so slow and I've been "out of sorts" so we aren't walking like we were but we are walking.
Trying to get myself in gear for December with some mini goals in mind other than weight loss, which truthfully I won't lose I have too much baking to do - for Christmas goodie trays I give out each year. I'm sad to say one of those recepients passed away this fall. It was such a shock - he died of an aneurysm in his brain in his sleep. I keep thinking about fixing his plate then I remember.
I'm hoping this "out of sorts" feeling has passed. I've felt better the last couple days but that could be because I haven't walked as far or as long as usual. I see my doctor on December 13th so will discuss things with him.
I've rambled on enough. Have a great week!

Survived Thanksgiving and even down a pound at my WW weigh-in this morning. Now to keep up with the downward scale trend for the next few weeks before I head home to Maine for Christmas. I know there will be lots of stresses and temptations while I'm in Maine. Feeling if I can do well and lose before I go it will help me stay focused while I'm there. Success leads to more success. Pushing towards my goal of 10 pds to Christmas, down 5.5, 4.5 to go.

Hope everyone is hanging in there this weekend, maybe even got out for some hiking.

Hi everyone,

Ramona - you are doing awesome. Small steps and every little bit adds up in the activity level. Go for short walks, stay warm and keep your spirits up. We're here for you if you need to vent or chat.

Had a good scale victory on Saturday's weigh-in at WW. Down 4.2 pds. That was for a couple of weeks as I hadn't weighed in the week I left for FL. This week will be a challenge with the holiday and my Hubby has arrived for a few weeks. He likes to eat out and we'll be on the go while he's here. That is always a challenge for me. I still plan to keep up with my workouts at the gym and I'll encourage him to eat in as much as possible to keep control of my intake calories.

Hope you all have a very Happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy the day.

Hey everyone! Sorry I've been absent this week. I've been all out of sorts, mentally & physically. I hope that I am back in my groove again.
I'm glad to hear you made it to Florida Kizzy. I hope you enjoy yourself while you're there! I sure wish I was back in Florida - it was so easy to be motivated to walk. I guess the weather going from the 70s down in to the 40s overnight last weekend, really threw me out of whack!
The past three days I have managed to get myself up with my dog and walk for at least two miles. I get cold though since we don't get going out until 3pm and by then a lot of our walking space is in the shade. I did get too cold one day and Wednesday I paid for it feeling horrible.
Kizzy enjoy your time in Florida. Get back into Nature and I'm confident you'll be seeing a scale victory as well as NSVs.
I hope everyone's doing well and staying healthy! Catch y'all later on.

Hi all,

Hope you are having good weeks. I am doing well right now. Amazing how not having home and work stresses can help you focus just on yourself and your goals. Hoping to see a scale victory on Saturdays weigh-in. Working out at the gym 4 days a week. No hiking yet. As I get settled I'll start going for some walks in the nature perserves near here. They are not as interesting as Maine or the AT. Florida trails are all the same. still I'll be outside in the woods walking.

Happy Trails

Hi everyone,

Ramonoa- thanks for your kind words. It means a lot.

I did drive to FL over the weekend. DH is planning to fly down on Sunday. This gives me a week to open the house, clean and get everything ready so when he arrives he can relax for the short time he's here. Not sure what's going to happen about work so we're taking it one day at a time. I may be driving right back to ME after Thanksgiving.

I struggled with eating while driving. I tend to snack all the time where I'm boarded. Just me, the dog and cat so no one to chat with or interact to pass the time. Still the scales here say I've stayed the same. I'm going to consider that a positive and move forward from here. My week is planned, groceries stocked, gym membership paid for so no excuses.

Here's to a good week for everyone. emoticon

Kizzy - thank you for all the information you are giving me. I totally appreciate it. Now I know what to look for and how to use the poles.

Praying things work out for you. We finally have some sun. It's been drizzly rain, cloudy and windy with temps only in the 40s. Just cut right through you. We're supposed to get a quick warm up then the temps drop back down. It's November I need to get used to it but I just can't get warm this year. It gets worse every year. Oh well.

Stay positive that things will work out. Don't be like me and go off on a feeding frenzy and gain weight. Ughhhh...I've been lazy and not wanting to do anything. Time to get myself back on track so that the holidays won't be so tempting!

Hoping today and the rest of the week go better for you. Take care of yourself.

Ramona - using the poles becomes second nature after you use them a little. You naturally swing your oposite arm from leg when you walk and it's just using a pole in that hand. They really help when you go up and down for support.

Things are still on edge here at work. Trying to take it an hour at a time to get through the next few days. No sleep last night, tossed and turned and worried. This too shall pass and I have to trust that things will workout in the long run. Trying to stay positive and not totally go off the edge eating.

Snow here in Maine last night and now rain. A cold dreary day and messy outside. I'm sure by the end of the day the rain will have washed all the snow away. Now it's a dark gloomy day. Good news is it is supposed to warm up next week.

Have a good day everyone. Keep up the walking, a little at a time.

Kizzy,
Thanks for the information on the knee braces and using the poles. I'm such a klutz I don't know if I could use them, but I definitely need them for balance and stepping up and down since that's my main problem. I'll have to look into the braces. I appreciate your help there.

I hope the business problems get straightened out where you can leave for FL. I know that's got to be rough. Good luck there.

I haven't been worth a dime today. I did get some cleaning around the house done and laundry before my migraine hit so it wasn't a total disaster. Feeling much better now. Take care y'all!

Ramona - The kneebraces I use are called Rehband 7751. They are sold individually and you have to measure to order the right size. They provide compression support so if any circulation issues you may need to limit the time worn. Researching they recommend 8 hours maximum time to keep on. I used them hiking all day. At the gym it's only for an hour or so. I will say my knees feel much better now using them. One of my golfing friends bought them too and likes them. Here's where I ordered them from: http://www.jackalsgym.com/store.aspx?cat_i
d=RH

The hiking poles I use 2 poles. I bought mine years ago from LLbean, live in Maine they are easy to shop at. I think using two helps with balancing better and on descents I use them for support as I step down. The two things to consider when buying are the adjustment and the weight. There's no right way to use them, just how ever works for you. Most people use them like ski poles, reaching forward with right pole and left foot, you step just not glide like on crosscountry skiis.

A little bit of a tough day for me. Some business problems which may delay my leaving for FL indefinitely. Taking it a moment at a time. I'm working hard not to be an emotional eater.

Hi Kizzy, thanks for the kind words. I've been looking for hiking poles but really didn't know what to look for. I didn't know whether you need one or two or how to use them properly. I've seen hikers with all sorts of "hiking sticks" but didn't know what to look for. My son and I have looked at them at Dicks & Gander Mountain. I think most of them I saw were adjustable. Any info is appreciated. Tell me more about this knee brace too.
I found this video when I was playing around today on Facebook. I'm a fan of the Appalachian Trail facebook page and this was on it. Hope y'all enjoy it.

Ramona - you did awesome on your hike. Every step is a positive movement. Pick some little hikes, give yourself extra time and take it one step at a time. Remember it's your hike not someone elses and you hike it how ever you want. Just think about Bill Irwin who hike the whole AT blind. That is amazing and when I look at a section that seems steep or rocky or hard I think he did it blind, I can see at least. It's so awesome you got any time at on all on the AT. I always take a backpack with extra stuff..."just in case" even for an hour hike locally. You just never know. My knees bother me and hiking poles really help. If you haven't tried them you might want to check them out. All outfitter stores carry them and even Walmart. Make sure they are adjustable. Also I invested in a knee brace my trainer at the gym suggested for our workouts to help protect my knees for the lifting and squats we do. They were expensive at $35 each (needed one for each knee) but well worth it. I wore them backpacking and it made a huge difference on my achy knees. If you ever have an interest in getting some let me know and I can give you the site to order them from.

Happy Trails everyone

Kizzy

Kizzy, you have to work with where you're at. It's great you live where you can go. I live in far western Kentucky so the only time I get to go is when I visit my brother in NE TN. This was the first year I attempted any hiking. I love it. Granted I still have problems with the "steps" on the trail but that's because of my knees and I don't think that'll ever get better unfortunately. Plus the arthritis in my hips limits me some too. I try not to let it get me though. I was thrilled to be able to do one knob at Carvers Gap this year. I told my brother I wanted to go back next summer and attempt the second one. He said he honestly didn't think I'd make it to the top of the knob much less make it to the second one. The step ups there stopped me and I wasn't too sure how I'd feel on the return trip. I have asthma but that didn't bother me there.
The asthma got me in the Smoky Mountains at the Abrahms Falls trail. I had a full blown asthma attack, my blood sugar bottomed out and other hikers alerted the rangers to watch for me. I made it back - thank God for inhalers, glucose tablets and concerned hikers who made sure I had plenty of water and a nice cold towel. The ranger was just getting ready to call for a search when we showed up. The trail's 2.5 miles to the falls and it's rated moderate the first 3/4 mile and the rest is difficult. Since it was 3pm when we started our "walk" because we did not intend on going all the way to the falls, it was 8:45pm when we got back to the car. There had been a bear spotted on the trail after we headed to the falls too. So with my eye problems seeing when it starts getting dark is a problem. I also tripped and fell over some rocks in the trail. So I had a mighty swollen knee when I walked out. But I was determined to walk out on my own.
I will be prepared for just about anything next time I hit the trails. It's not something to do on the spur of the moment like we did.
Have a fantastic day.
Ramona
