My idea of being lazy is not doing something that I don't have to do any way. It's just a word. I think we define "lazy" in other people's terms. You might think I am lazy because I didn't fold up one towel the way you thought I should. I might think your are lazy because you didn't train for a 5k. "Lazy" is just a perception. Don't define yourself with others' definitions. It is up to you how you feel about what you do regarding "laziness." It is nothing you have to feel guilty about or worry about. Just do what you can and be happy with what you have done!

Lazy is an interesting idea. I'm lazy for leaving the dishes in the sink all day. I'm lazy because I didn't make my bed. I'm not lazy because I drove an hour to get to my therapy appointment today (and back). I'm not lazy because I walked my dogs 5 times today. Not sure if I'm lazy for going back to bed after our first walk at 6:30am, until 8:30am.

It's only for us to decide what adds up to categorizing us as lazy. But, Lisa, if you're missing your manic, why not mimic it? make an excuse to gather your family and go to midnight bowling. go to a shelter and ask them to let you run the dogs around the property until you drop. my favorite is to find a carnival and ride the gravitron a couple of times. (it's the greatest ride in the world!) paint your spare bedroom. go to a friend's house and paint their spare room or reorganize their closets.

Last year I made a road trip to Cleveland and it was exhilarating for me. Oddly, I was most exhilarated being in a library there. (long story) It started to revive a deep part of myself.

Everyone should do something or go somewhere unusual or that makes them feel rejuvenated every few months. It will change your perspective for the better, if you let it. If you haven't seen Dead Poets Society, google it, specifically "oh captain my captain". After that you'll get it when I tell you to stand on your desk and enjoy the view!

Words have power...so be careful what you feed your mind and allow others to feed you. Just because a word is used to describe you by someone else doesn't mean you have to accept it as fact.

You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face.

Mistakes are the portals of discovery.

Don't be afraid to give your best at what seemingly are small jobs. Every time you conquer one it makes you that much stronger. If you do the little jobs well, the big ones will tend to take care of themselves.

It is never too late to be what you might have been.

Lisa--That's cool, I just didn't want you to think I was saying you have a reason to punish yourself. I realize he made his bed, now he must pay the piper but it still bothers me. I just got a letter from him and he is miserable.

My Mom used it as a term of endearment almost. Even with the youngest grandkids she would always say get up lazybones it is time for breakfast, school, whatever it was time for.

Lisa when Gary said he thought I was punishing myself he was referring to over Paul. I blamed myself and still do to a certain extent for his situation. I am his Mom, what did I do wrong? He thinks I want to be miserable because he is in his current situation. I want answers that I will never get.

I am sorry to hear that the word "lazy" is still being used today.
We know so much more about motivation and biology now then when I was young.
Being belittled and "teased" as a child, I turned my anger inward and became depressed. My mother and her mother also suffered from life long depression so I had the genes for it.
Not having energy or motivation does not equal "lazy", whatever that is. It seems like it is just another word people use so they can feel superior. Nuts to them.

No, you don't sound stupid at all! Thank you for asking an honest question. I lived with horrible guilt about EVERYTHING I did for years!!! I obsessed about it! It was awful.

Short of telling you about God I don't know what I can say except this. Forgiveness is about YOU not the other person. Most of the people I have forgiven from my early years don't even know I have forgiven them. I took it all straight to the Sky, Universe....whatever you need to call it.

In fact, I was an Atheist when I learned to forgive. I realized when I let go of my anger I felt better. Anger is so consuming & exhausting. I also started thinking about the people I 'hated' & 'resented' and came to the conclusion that they would be happy if they knew how I still suffered because of them! Well, that alone would have been reason for me to forgive them. I deserved happiness that I was inadvertently giving to my abusers???

I heard somebody say one time that God forgives EVERYONE, so how do you not forgive yourself? Your opinion of you is more important than God's? God forgave me...how can I not forgive myself. That's what God wants me to do!

I know if you don't believe in God that doesn't seem like it can help you, but you can exchange God's name for Mother Nature, Universe or Sky....Bob if you like! Trust me when I tell you Bob forgives you. Forgive yourself!

I don't think I'm a bad person really.I guess I beat myself up and put myself down. But I'm not a bad person or did bad horrible things in life.

How did you forgive yourself? And other people? I hold on to this anger and I think if I could just forgive myself and people that have hurt me I can move forward. But I dont know how to forgive. I don't understand what forgive but not forget means. Not that I don't understand it but how do you do it? I dint mean to sound stupid. Its an unfamiliar concept for me.

I've given this 'punishing myself' idea a lot of thought & it most definitely is NOT the case for me. I am NOT a 'bad' person. I do NOT deserve to be punished. I have done 'bad' things. I have made 'bad' choices. I have put myself in 'bad' situations. I have had 'bad' things happen to me. But, as I said, I KNOW I am not a 'bad' person!

All those 'bad' things have helped to shape me into the person I am & I have been forgiven (By myself & God) for them so I use them as life lessons! I've turned out pretty 'good' despite the 'bad' stuff so it was all worth it!

I feel that I'm punishing myself also.I think I do it on purpose so I don't get better. I hate being like this but its the only normal I've ever known and I might be afraid of actually being normal or ok with myself. Its a cycle I can't seem to break it.

I just found out that I'm being discharged from my psychiatrists office because I missed some appointments.I left messages with the answering service and the lady I spoke with told me if I would've given a reason I would not be discharged. Funny thing is the days I canceled were days i could't get out of bed. So just another thing to confirm I'm lazy I guess.

Thanks for listening.

Lisa--I was always told I was lazy, still am told that. I always refer to myself as being lazy. Even my BFF Gary calls me lazy. Is it laziness or am I just unmotivated and apathetic or some of everything? Funny thing is(not really funny) is when I do exercise or whatever, I feel so much better. Gary says I am punishing myself for something and I don't want to feel better, Can he be right? Lots to think about. When my pool membership runs out at the end of the month, I don't know what I will do. Like someone said, I fake it till I will make it. emoticon

I am seldom happy. I have been on almost every drug and still am depressed. I don't really call myself lazy ( even though my Moms family are highly critical and use the word profusely) I am more tiered. Bone weary. Sick of it all. I hope you find relief .

I have been told I was lazy all the time by my mom and even recently by a close friend who sometimes thinks I'm faking my depression. And this is coming from someone working in the medical field and has anxiety attacks and can't drive by herself. People are ignorant. You are awesome and don't forget it!

emoticon I have asked myself the same question during my "funk" times. I wonder if it is depression, or whether I am shamefully slothful! emoticon I wish I knew the answer for you, but if it helps -I usually try to work with what I have! If I am low energy I try to find something/anything to do that will enable me to feel like I didn't waste a day. I know it will pass with time. And sometimes, I just have to fake it 'til I make it. Other times, I cave & wallow in it! emoticon

I assume you will be discussing it with your physician; just be gentle on yourself until you are in balance again (i.e. meds )! You always seem so upbeat & positive when I see your posts, so I know you are doing the best you can! emoticon

I think some of it can be attributed to how we were treated as a child. If a child is constantly told they were lazy, then odds are as an adult, they will think of themselves as lazy if they don't do what the 'average Joe Blog' would perceive as normal daily chores.

Sometimes our emotional/mental health just doesn't allow enough energy to do the things that really 'should' be done. Sometimes it takes all of the energy we have just to get through as it is.

It sounds like the Pristiq hasn't properly kicked in yet - don't forget to keep in close contact with your Dr, because it MAY be that it needs tweaking a bit, still.

Good luck,
Kris

Those of you who know me know that I am Bipolar & just realized last month that the anti-depressant (Zoloft) I was on for 16 years seemed to have stopped working. I've been on Pristiq for a little over 3.5 weeks and my mood has increasingly been happier tho, not as happy as I want to be.

I realize some of this may be that I am expecting (& wanting) the usual mania that follows a down time, but I cannot shake my laziness. I keep thinking any second now my inspiration to RULE THE WORLD will kick in & I just don't feel it. I still want to sit at home. I have been better about going out, (Tho NOT much) but every day I still have the same lame excuses as yesterday!

Lazy is a dreaded word from my childhood so the mere sound of it sends a chill down my spine, but I cannot get over being (feeling) Lazy. I went so far as to introduce myself to somebody today as Lazy Lisa...not quite like that, but you get my point.

So where does illness end & laziness begin? OR are they one in the same???

Lisa
