arrived 4/28 be here till 7/1 then back home my grandson is a fifth grader so want to be around when he flies up to Middle School his other grandparents will arrive 6/11, we want to be around as he is our first grandchild know it has nothing to do with gyms but well

Ah-ha! I've wondered where you are. For some reason, I don't know or recall why, I thought that you may live in Canada. You're much farther than that.

Nas, I'm saddened and angered by the collapse of the factory building. Bangladesh must be very beautiful. It has far more than it's share of tragic events, both natural and man-made. The climate won't change, but I hope that the other things will before long.

P.S. Gyms in the U.S. vary greatly in quality of the facilities and, therefore, the fees vary. My membership costs me nothing, as my medical plan provides an exercise class benefit. It happens that the nearest place (one street from my apartment) that offers the plan's classes has complete gym facilities and - I don't know why -- the benefit provides full membership privileges.

Laurie--I am so proud of you. I have to think of some tricks to get myself to the pool. I did it last week, but this week, nope. I talked myself out of it on Monday, even though I know how good I feel after and during. Then I get mad at myself.

I hope you get set up right away with a physical therapist. I have done physical therapy several times, had good therapist who have shared wonderful resources with me.

Lost 65 lbs and maintained since 2006.

And now for the punchline: I seem to have exacerbated something that had been hurting for a while, so I'll take a break from exercising, alas. I'll be seeing a spine osteo doctor soon about it (have had the appointment on the book for a few weeks) and hope he'll set me up for physical therapy and perhaps be able to recommend a good, certified trainer who has experience working the people with various limitations.

It's so hard to convince yourself to get there, isn't it!
I just started weight training again. I dragged my feet the whole way but, after three 15 minute sessions over the week, I am so happy about it. Having fun while exercising is so important. I think that is also a part of relieving the depression.

I decided on Friday, the last time I was at the gym, that I'd go back today. As usual, I started the day by resisting the idea. To overcome the ambivalence, I concocted a new little trick to play on myself. I chose to make the grocery store my first errand, but, "just in case," dressed for the gym and put the membership card in my pocket. By then I knew I'd get to both destinations. To teach myself a lesson, though, about wanting to weasel out of the gym, I went from the store to the Y with the shopping cart** (took it for the many heavy items on my list), which made me feel like a peasant. I don't like feeling like a peasant.

The gym monitor started me on the Cybex Arc Trainer, my first time using it. I began at way too high a resistance level and too fast for my ability. I gradually decreased resistance and speed, but by then, it was too late. I stuck it out for 10 minutes, but it was a death wish. Next time I'll start on the Cybex at a sane pace and resistance level.

After some rest, I embarked on the recumbent stationary bike for 20 minutes so that I I'd have a 30-minute total. At 20, though I was close enough to four miles that I did another minute to reach the mark.

Tada! Am I obnoxious enough?

** It may take a Noo Yawka to know what the cart is.
