Also, I always ask for the manager. It's not hard to steam veggies in foil, a little butter with freshly ground pepper and garlic, and grill some plain meat or something. They just need to talk to the chef. It's worthwhile to try.
Do you have a restaurant wallet card explaining what you can and can't have? It's helpful (and sometimes I'll even make enlarged copies for them to keep...hopefully they keep it anyway). There are free ones online - just google (through SP of course!). You can also buy a set in different languages for different cuisines from Triumph Dining. google them too. I think they're about $10, but they're laminated and nice.
