Well, I'm thinking there's a connection in MHO. My FIL died summer of 05 from what I think was non-Hodgkin's lymphoma which can be a result of undiagnosed celiac. He and I shared multiple symptoms (B12 deficiency, though his was pernicious anemia, eczema, hypothyroidism and depression - and he was alcoholic). HIS mother had Alzheimers. HIS aunt died from iron deficiency!

I was a little spacey prior to dx. I remember being the car and forgot WHERE I was going. It was critical to remember because I was at the intersection. Several of my friends were like that as well, but they were pregnant, and I was always like -- I'm spacey, but I don't know why!

Now, this isn't anything like alzheimers, my grandma had alzheimers and was hard for the family. We're not sure if she had celiac, we think she might have because a few family members remembers her having stomach issues occassionally. She also had late-onset diabetes.

CountryMouse - I'm pretty sure it was a small number because I remember thinking it wasn't enough and that I should have been included.

From my experience, not everyone has neuro issues. And I can say that my decline has definitely abated since going gf. I'm not "miraculously" better and remember everything either, but I'm not worsening.

Only five participants in their study? That's surprising.

It certainly wouldn't surprise me to learn there was a celiac-alzheimers connection as both run hand in hand in the female members of my family. What I'm most interested in finding out is whether going gluten free will stop the onset - or if they are just intertwined or likely to be carried in tandem. Its my biggest fear about aging - don't mind losing mobility if I have to but I'm terrified of losing my mind.

Here's a small study which links mental health and celiac.

I just know I was suffering from dementia prior to diagnosis last year. I know Mayo Clinic also did a study with 5 participants to suggest the connection between celiac and dementia.

This article also includes info about gluten ataxia, fyi.
