I love the message boards! I've had problems with headaches (not migraines) since going off dairy and gluten two weeks ago - plus also went caffeine free for the most part. Looks like I'm going through withdrawal!

How long does the withdrawal process take? We're on the elimination diet for 30 days before slowly going to the add back process...

Laflaca- I have discovered a few other food issues that anger my gut and especially my liver: citric acid in tomatoes, artificial ingredients in condiments like mayo, fertilizers and pesticides in standard farmed spinach, mercury in canned tuna, and vinegar of the mayo or other salad dressing if used has sulfites of sulfur molecules. A journal marking what is eaten and how you feel can find the odd discomfort. Of All the foods you mentioned the avocado is the only thing I can now eat. The old me would have loved your recipe for a fresh salad. The ‘me’ of today does not. Ask your doctor about ellimination diet to find all allergen or intolerant foods post gluten removal.

Jess,

I have been GF for several months now and I continue having headaches. I am trying to figure out what is the cause. I was fine today until I have a salad with canned tuna fish, Spanish, tomatoes and avocado. After I ate it my vision got very blurry and I had to take a nap. After several hours I still have the headaches.

Ps- Congratulations on your weight lost progress...

Lilly_spark- I found a study that stated most people with the common lupus signs may also be low in the trace minerals of molybdenum and vanadium. Has your doctor tested for these other potential complications of malnutrition?

There are four types of lupus: discoid, systemic, drug-induced and neonatal lupus. Which type do you have?

Coffee withdrawl can certainly do it. Do you like tea? Try balck tea or green tea. It has less, but some caffeine.

I'm so sorry! My headaches aren't as bad since I'm working gluten out.

One thing: After learning I was GF, I *though* I cut out gluten but had continued to eat foods that I didn't realize it was in because I simply didn't *know*!

It took me over a week after finding out I had still been getting a little bit of gluten before my symptoms started subsiding (note: I learned that I was gluten-intolerant accidentally, doing elimination testing for lupus triggers -- trying to have less episodes! So, I had been several-things-free for a month when I added pasta and my "fake meats"). The pasta was obvious, the fake meats were my "oopsie."

I believe you. A fact of chelation therapy is the stiff pain after taking in the absorbing elements. Cleaning out the cells hurts. Heavy metal, seasonal adjustments, and toxic removal efforts take gentle time to endure and tolerate this change.

I had serious ones post gluten pledge that told me to find any other intolerance or true allergy from other things in foods-medicines-beverages-health and beauty products-industrial cleaners like distillates-and environmental influences. I avoid citric acid; dairy; sulfites; high ratios of arginine over lysine like in nuts; hormones and antibiotics found in proteins of meat and eggs.

The amazing body tells us all kinds of neat things usually we do not listen. Some people have avoided listening to pain causes so long they are overtired every day. Listen to your body and help find the signs and their causes. Energy is a terrible thing to waste.

Getting enough sleep can recharge and calm other noises to hear the unbalance. Too much caffeine (coffee, green tea, white tea, chocolate, soft drinks, some headache remedies, etc…); artificial sweeteners; insufficient rest; dehydration, white noise and over stimulation of crowded places or high stress jobs of heavy multi-tasking can all strain the brain. I am sorry you hurt. To prevent the pain from returning too often find it and do it less and less until a life style can change.

cutting out coffee will also cause headaches too, even though you said that you did not drink much, it only takes a little to cause headaches when you stop using it.

I have cut out coffee, it was never a big thing ... One cup every day to every other day. I cut it out because I herd flavored coffee has gluten. I don't like anything but flavored coffee so I cut it out.

I agree you could be sensitive to something else now. Or it can be withdrawl. Have you made any other changes, like cutting out soda or coffee? Or anything that can affect your blood pressure like changes in sodium ormore stress in your life?

I haven't really subbed anything weird. I have had some tofu but I have never had problems with soy. Gluten free bread is the only other thing out of the ordinary.

Keep a journal of what you are eating and when the headaches are the worst. (Peanutbutter causes extreme headaches for me.) Part of it might be detox taking place, but it could also be another food. Have you had anything with MSG in it? That can be another cause of headaches.

I agree that they are mostly likely symptoms from getting the gluten out of your system but you should also look at what you have started substituting in your diet as replacement for gluten...if you are adding in new stuff you have not eaten before you may be allergic to them as well...hope you find out what is causing this and feel better soon!

I had headaches, and a whole host of body aches. The body aches were the worst for me, it felt like the pain was in my bones. Chances are it's just part of the withdrawal process, but if they're bad and they last much longer, please consult your doctor about them.
Hope you feel better soon!

I've been gluten free for 2 weeks also and I haven't had any nasty side effects at all, other than craving desserts. LOL Hope it goes away quickly.

Hey, I've been gluten free for the most part (a few accediental times) for about 2 weeks now. I have been noticing that I have been having a lot more headaches since I cut gluten out of my diet. They have lasted anywhere from a few hours to one that took me almost 2 full days to shake. I usually wake up with them.

Anyone else get headaches after stopping gluten? How long did it take for them to stop?

Thanks
- Jess
