Thanks Nomad. I'll be getting back bloodtests this week, so I will look into it to ask more questions. The more I search, the more I see connections, but I'm not a doctor and need a "big picture."

Dotslady,
I have an excellent Naturopath that is also an MD. He prefers to practice Naturopathy as he feels he can be more effective. He uses Vega testing and based on that determines which homeopath remedy I need. I've learned to do the muscle resistance testing on myself and can be somewhat accurate.
I saw an ad from Natures Fare for AdrenalSense. website is www.hormonehelp.com
I don't generally recommend taking these kinds of things without professional assistance but this one caught my attention.

I have Sublingual B Total(B complex with extra B12. It has 200 mcg Folic acid, 1.7 mg B2(riboflavin), 20 mg B3(niacin), 2 mg B6m 1000 mcg B12, 30 mg B5. Supposed to use once/day, or more if under stress, or before physical activity. I get it at a local health food store. It gives me energy. I definately notice a difference when I forget to use it. Salt or sugar? Well, sometimes I crave both!

Dotslady - I just purchased a B-12 liquid today that you take with a dropper. It has 1000mcg. How about something like that instead. They also had B-12 Mega dots - I think sublingual with 5000mcg.

I needed something to help me get energy since I quit drinking caffeine this week. I will let you know if it helps some time next week.

GFNomad - what tests does your naturopath do to figure out your adrenals are low? And what do you do to recover?

My B12 is consistently in the 400s or below. Below is when you have mental problems (or some such thing indicated as a "note" on the lab results). I did get all the paraphanalia to give myself shots, but haven't mustered the habit yet. I best be doing this since I have it all. I should have asked for sublingual ...

Ok, I'm on the opposite side. I've always had a sweet tooth. When I was a child, my Mother would give me a B+ liquid supplement when I got severely run down and I would 'perk' right up. I've always had to take supplements. When I don't, I slowly go down hill in energy and general well being.
I've also heard many times that we all gravitate to the salty foods or the sweet foods but I don't remember what the reason was.
If the salt is an indication of some other deficiency, then congratulations on figuring it out and recovering your health. It took many years of this kind of connections that lead to my diagnosis. I had one doctor tell me there was no such thing as food allergies! Woah, was he ever wrong!
ps. at least once a year my naturopath finds my adrenals low.

I just figured out that salt craving could also indicate adrenal insufficiency. I'm getting tested tomorrow.

This is so interesting. I have always craved salt, sometimes pouring salt from the shaker and eating it alone. I was extremely anemic as a child and am borderlline now. It;s funny how it all fits together. I agree the doctors don't see the whole picture sometimes. emoticon

No one is guaranteed hapiness. Life just gives each person time and space. It's up to us to fill it with joy.

I'm going to print that for the doctor who knew that I was overeating sunflower seeds and also had ice pica (she said trying to get minerals from ice was an old wive's tale - did I already mention that?!) I should be their second reported case.

AWESOME job Sassibrix. Thanks.

This is the only article I could find on PubMed doing a cursory search. It is a 1985 article:

Shapiro MD, Linas SL.
A young woman was referred for nephrologic evaluation of hypertension and a curious desire for table salt. Suspicion of iron-deficiency anemia arose only after it was determined that sodium balance was achievable during supervised sodium restriction. This salt craving abated within 2 weeks of initiation of iron replacement therapy. Although pica is a common manifestation of iron deficiency, this appears to be the first reported case of salt pica secondary to iron deficiency.

I was "borderline" anemic for years too. One doctor told me to take iron, I did, and it constipated me worse, so I quit. I had heart palpitations and she had me take an Rx for magnesium and potassium. Didn't work. (hellooo, celiac!).

It wasn't until years later that I complained to a new doc that I was soo tired of being sooo tired that he did a FULL IRON panel. It was THERE that they found my serum ferritin (which, if I remember correctly, is the iron stored in your bones) was "alert" level and ordered the colonoscopy. It was "me" who googled anemia and researched enough to ask the gastroenterologist to do an endoscopy (though I didn't realize what could come of it). Thank goodness he agreed last minute. I asked him on the table! That google search saved my life!

Sorry to hear about your missed opportunity Katie. It's sooo frustrating when you're trying to fix yourself and you need different "support" than you get.

Sassibrix - let us know what you find out.

Oh, and btw, I've been anemic for years too. Not deathly anemic, just low iron. Had to have a colonoscopy (now why the heck didn't they check for celiac's while they were there too, given all the very obvious symptoms...sheeesh).
k.

Thanks for the information. I think this requires some more research. I also have a salt craving and this may just be what my problem is. I have also been taking supplements for years, but perhaps not the right ones. Iron is difficult to get into the system from what I have heard if you don't have the right type of iron supplement and other supplements to assist absorption. I will have to do some research. I don't think our doctors get enough information on nutrition while going to school. They do not offer much homeopathic nutritional information. Conventional allopathic medicine does not seem to encourage nutritional information.

Amazing how all this stuff starts to fit together like a puzzle. I have always craved salt. I would eat pickles, or an entire jar of green olives. Never craved sugar -- it actually sort of gags me. But the salt and iron connection. Who knew? Such a good thing to know....

I've craved salt since I can remember. I couldn't figure out if I put out my thyroid with salt (sunflower seeds for years), or because I was an undiagnosed celiac for years and craved it FOR my thyroid function.

Today I watched a rerun of Dr. Oz on Oprah. She had on a Dr. Masterson from CA talking about women's issues. She said when a woman craves salt it's because she's anemic! Light bulb moment! I've been ANEMIC all these years! Just wondered how this may have panned out for you before you were diagnosed, if this applies. Your thoughts would be appreciated. (I haven't read the Blood Type Diet yet) - it's by my bed waiting, so good night! Thanks all.
