Smash - some us gain because our guts are healing and if we're retaining nutrients we are also retaining the calories that go with them! You don't have to be eating more -- I gained 20. (Like I needed it!) I feel so much better i don't care. I like to say that I'm fat and happy now! Happy to lose the weight!
WriterMommy - I believe in these detoxes. I am a follower of Ann Louise Gittleman's - she writes the Fat Flush Diet for detoxing one's liver. I think so many people don't know how much they pollute their bodies ... thanks for the info. Good stuff.

I clipped this article a number of years ago out of First magazine and have used it several times since - a spring detox to rid your body of harmful impurities - and the side bonus of winter weight! [Note: this is very similar to a detox I did under the supervision of our naturopath, which helped my joints, etc. and how I *try* to eat normally to keep my problems at bay, with the addition of lean and vegetable-based proteins).

Do you need to detox? * Have you been suffering from frequent colds, flu, or allergies? * Do you often feel run-down or tired? * Are you overweight but can't lose the extra pounds? * Do you eat a lot of processed foods?
Detoxing cleanses the bloodstream, liver, kidneys, and other organs, leaving you healthier, slimmer, and rejuvenated. Lack of sunlight in winter, plus the stress of cold weather and inactivity results in biochemical imbalances and toxin buildup - which trigger bloating, sluggishness, weight gain, and blue moods. The 7-day detox (based on Dr. Stephen Barrie's book 7-Day Detox Miracle) uses nutritionally balanced foods to quickly, safely and effectively reverse the effects of winter's toxin overload.
Days 1 and 2 To rid your body of toxins quickly and effectively, drink your meals for the first 48 hours. Juice-fasting aids elimination, boosts immune system function, and helps your body shed excess water and fat. Choose from: water, water with lemon, green tea, herbal tea, vegetable and fruit juices, three-berry protein shake. Sip as much, as often as you want.
Days 3 to 7 Now that your body has passed through the initial two-day cleanse, you'll start to see dramatic results: rapid weight loss, a brighter outlook, better concentration, and increased energy. Today you'll be adding in solids - foods rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants needed to cleanse and heal the body. All veggies and fruits are allowed, except for grapefruit, which contains chemicals that significantly slow down detoxification, and corn. For added soluble fiber and liver support, choose brown, basmati, jasmine, or wild rice instead of white. Flavor foods with extra-virgin olive oil, flaxseed oil, vinegar, naturally fermented soy sauce, vegetable or sea salt, and any spices. Read labels carefully to avoid additives like sugar, artificial sweeteners, butter, margarine, corn, or wheat. Stick to the menu, but eat as much as you need to feel satisfied.
Shopping List * distilled or spring water * bananas, blueberries, grapes, raspberries, strawberries, lemons, oranges, any fruit except grapefruit (frozen ok) * broccoli, carrots, celery, garlic, onions, kale, potatoes, radishes, shallots, sweet potatoes, turnips, watercress, yellow squash, any veggies except corn. * any rice except white * rice cakes, rice crackers, rice noodles * green and herbal teas * fruit and vegetable juices (100% juice) * rice protein or vegetable protein powder * sea salt or vegetable salt * miso paste * soy sauce and vinegar * extra-virgin olive oil or flaxseed oil
Supplements * Multivitamin (take as directed) * Vitamin C (1000mg, 3xs/day) * Milk thistle (for liver support, 200 mg 3xs/day)
Spring Detox Soup Recipe 9 c water 3 onions, chopped 3/4 c rice noodles 3 carrots, chopped 3 c veggies, chopped 3 cloves garlic, chopped 9 Tbs miso
Bring water to boil, add everything but miso, boil for 10 mins. Remove from heat and whisk in miso. Makes 9 servings.
Three Berry Protein Shake Recipe 1 banana, halved 1/4 c strawberries 1 c fruit juice 1 c water 2 Tb rice protein powder 1/4 c blueberries 1/4 c raspberries
Supposedly you can lose up to 7 lbs in excess toxins, water, and fat. I never lost that much, but more like 2-4. But losing weight isn't as much the point as detoxing your body. There are, of course, extreme detox diets you can do (just Google it and you'll be astounded). But this one is safe and foodbased for a limited time.
Hi Writermommy99. I'm new to the group, but not to CD. I have been on a GF diet for about 4 years. However, eating right for CD has caused weight gain of course. I found Sparkpeople about 2 weeks ago. Anyway, Detox cleanse is something I think I need. Fruit, veggies & rice, is there somewhere to get info on this, or do you just wing it? I would appreciate any info you have. Thanks, Susie

Hi, I ate all the bad stuff during the holidays and honestly felt like crap all through Nov and Dec (ignoring the connection of course...I so love goodies). Then I ran across this detox article based on the 7 Day Detox Miracle, similar to one I did under the supervision of a naturopath about 5 yrs ago and decided to give it a go. Fruits, veggies, and rice for a week. I feel 100% better! Can't believe it made that much of a difference. I have Fibro, arthritis (at 33!), chronic fatigue, all those baddies that seem to go together, and I really do feel like a new woman. Wow.
