I get really bad gastrointestinal issues. HORRINDOUS gas (rotting rotten eggs, every 5-10 mins the WHOLE DAY!), bloating and stomach cramps, like i"ve been sucker punched. This can happen within 1 hours of eating it. I can feel nauseau, brain fog, and joint pain or leg cramps a day or two after, as well as a headache. I dont think I can consume eggs or dairy after an attack, but I"m still learning my triggers by logging everything in my food journal. I also alternate between diahrreah and constipation. Good ol' IBS symptoms.

This has been really helpful. I hadn't realized that when I get extremely fatigued it could be a hidden gluten reaction. I kept thinking I had waited too long to eat or hadn't had enough protein. I just got blisters around the inside of my lips (no other place in my mouth) the other day that went away in 24 hours. Could that have been a gluten reaction?

Mine is water weight and gut bloating which do not hurt, but migraine headaches and indigestion which do become painful and will last for 3 days with fewer sleep hours each 24 hour period complicating everything else.

I'm still trying to figure out my 'pattern.' I think it depends on how much gluten I accidentally get.

I'll come back to work from lunch with dark circles under my eyes, feel extremely fatigued, and have trouble concentrating from even the smallest cross-contamination. Sometimes I get the tingling in my feet and sometimes even my fingers, which I think is from a slightly higher cross-contamination.

If I get more than a tiny amount of gluten, my stomach will start churning, and about an hour later I'll be in the bathroom. The fatigue from exposures like that lasts 2-3 days.

About a month ago, I was getting serious reactions... I was jittery, shaky, anxious, couldn't sit still, and the fatigue was hitting in seriously scary waves. I traced that back to Tinkyada pasta. As sad as I am about it, eliminating the Tinkyada has eliminated that reaction.

I react like JenCorrine, immediate exhaustion, depression, panic attacks, my body feels like lead. Then gastrointestinal problems, bloating, pain, diarrhea. After about 12 hours I get joint pain and my skin blisters. I am more sensitive to lactose and my small intestine takes about a week to get where it is not sore.

Corn in any form is currently blistering my skin at this point. It takes about a week of being extra vigilent to get the blisters to start to heal and stop itching like a chigger bite.

I am getting awefully hard to feed, esp when not at home.

Since I have the dermatitius version of gluten intolerance it can take a week or two for the blisters to appear. If I haven't been recording my food intake it makes it very hard to go back and try and figure out what I ate that caused it. It takes at least two weeks for the blisters to clear up again.

When I truly get glutened, I know because it is more than just GI upset, constipation or diarrhea. It feels like broken glass starting at a high level in my stomach area and traveling around and down through me. It moves slowly and takes at least a day to pass through. I also get super tired, and feel like I have a flu. Initially my heart rate goes up and I feel like a rush of inflammation in my head also, then the bloat begins in the belly...I also get rashes on my face within a day or so. I use nettle tea, ginger tea, quercitin, and aloe vera juice to help.

I get headache, almost immediately. Then i start to have horrible joint pain. it starts in my legs and works its way up and up and up. Just in the last 6 months, i have started to have GI problems with gluten. If i eat something, i seem to fill up with gas, then i have cramping and gotta go gotta go! so much fun.
I watch what i eat like a hawk now, because being sick is no fun!

I get really bitchy emoticon mainly due to being extremely uncomfortable. Last time I had such severe cramping that I went for a run. It helps period cramps, but certainly NOT gluten induced cramps!

I feel like I've been hit w/ instant flu, but no throwing up.

When I get glutened within 5 - 15 min the head(neurological) symptoms start and last about a week - brain fog, extreme tiredness, mood swings, vertigo, depression, panic attacks. Then a couple of hours later the stomach joins in - cramping, nausea, diarrhea and will be in the bathroom for the next 2-3 hours or until I go to sleep. It scares me with this is what I feel, what damage is done that I don't feel.

I forgot and now adding the next several days I can expect a huge allergy attack. The way my Dr explained it is my body puts so much into fighting the gluten theres nothing left for the allergies.

I have gut pain and am really grouchy. Sometimes it is just within a few minutes and sometimes it takes a little longer. Probiotics and lots of water helps. (I am going to try quercitin next time also. Thanks for the suggestion - Hopefully the next time won't be any time soon). Also, an exposure seems to weaken my immune system so I am more likely to catch anything that is going around. I try to be really careful and haven't had any sick days yet this year (but I have had a few grouchy days.)

If I am exposed to gluten or over exposed to dairy I break out in an itchy rash and occasionally get stomach bloating, gas and pain. I take Quercitin with bromelain and or benadryl for the allergic reaction and gasex for stomach discomfort. Usually it is a very small hidden amount in something unknown to me so not always sure where or what the reaction came from. I have been gluten free for 3 1/2 years and stayed dairy free for 3 years. I have just started allowing myself some cheeses and love ranch dressing on my salads. Seem to be ok with this if I don't overdo!! I eat out with my family and try to eat only gluten free but cross contamination happens. Barb .

I knew that accidental gluten "poisoning" (as we call it at our house) causes me to be extremely sensitive to milk for a while. So I usually get milk out of my diet first thing I know that I've been "poisoned" emoticon . I DIDN'T realize that I also might need to lay off fructose/fruit as well. I'll try that too and see if that speeds things up. (I also already eat a lot of vegies, beans, nuts, and other whole foods - so that helps. But maybe the fruit is making things worse. Hadn't thought of that...)

I had an accidental gluten ingestion a month ago. That night major gas and diarrhea. I thought I was fine but has a major reaction to skim milk two days later (almost ER level stomach pain). I've had a pain in my right side ever since. I just learned from a gastroenterologist that a gluten accident can damage the intestines and make you/me more vulnerable to lactose and fructose intolerance until all healed. For the past few days I have eliminated dairy and fruit and finally I am pain free again. A very painful lesson. I'm trying to look on the bright side--quicker weight loss if my food choices are so restricted ;)

I get so much intestinal bloat that I look six months pregnant. Sometimes I get pain in my lower left side. If I eat cleanly (lots of fruits and veggies) it will clear up within a few days. If I don't eat cleanly, it can take weeks. The bloat typically comes on within an hour of ingesting gluten.

I'm curious about how others react and recover from accidental gluten exposure. Do you get really sick and then slowly get better or (like me) get sick on somewhat of a bell-curve - with the worst days being in the middle before you start to feel better? Also, how quickly do you notice your symptoms? Just curious...
