I gave up tomatoes in an effort to reduce gut inflammation in my recovery of IBS symptoms. Maybe too much citric acid might be a sensitive cause of further inflammation and the signs you are feeling. We need to give the gut and the body time to stop swelling. Swelling is needed to get those nutrients and new tissue materials to the site of gluten gut damage. A planned controlled reduction of inflammation causing foods is a stress lowering step to help reduce pain and heal faster. I totally stopped eating any foods from the Solanaceae plant family and I feel better for avoiding these irritating foods with citric acid known to be causes of discomfort and here is one of the reasons why this is so.
First, I gave up ketchup due to sweeteners and corn products, then tomatoes sauces with added preservatives citric acid being one of them; then I gave up tomatoes whole fresh or cooked from the irritation and inflammation with discomfort from my eating them. I took each one of these foods tomato, egg plant, bell pepper of red-yellow-and green, and the classic potato, too. None of these foods are in my diet today. The change took testing with rotation and elimination diet strategies in a gradual decline of ways to prepare each type and menus to change.
I avoid the obvious citrus fruit but I still can enjoy the various citrus flavor and natural scents via essential oil flavorings of organic edible quality. The fruit flesh holds the citric acid; the oil is separated from this potential harmful experience.
Also citric acid is a derivative of yeast and when stress reducing skills are practiced then being aware of the additional additives made from yeast bi-products compounds gut and body stress. Stress that internal yeast plays in the body after many sets of antibiotic programs and an open gut wound will encourage the yeast control diet. Candida is often rampant in a sore gut when the friendly helpful floras are damaged and missing.

I don't have a problem but I'm the oddball in my family and don't like raw tomatoes. If it's in a sauce no problem.
My ND wants me to avoid all nightshades since they cause inflammation. Nightshades include - tomatoes, potatoes, peppers and eggplant.
I love Tomatoes fresh and lettuce. If I have more then three times a week to eat Tomatoes mostly. I end up trotting too much to the ladies room. I get pain as well.
Has anyone else have that or have a suggestion why I am?
One lady was suggestioning to have lots of veggies and fruit with being a Celiac. I love tomatoes. So now trying every other day to eat Tomatoes. See what happens.
