I wouldn't be rushing to use it.

Dorothy, I don't believe this is available to the public yet; ie, it's not the same thing as gluten-zyme or an enzyme product marketed protection against gluten contamination/exposure.

But that's weird news about your son if that's what he took?!!

my son used that products and he has leaky gut and now can't eat any shrimp since using that drug. He used to be able to eat shrimp but now can't and he is only 25 now.

I enjoyed that and the comments! I am thinking that I would LOVE a pill that would allow me to temporarily indulge in some glutinous goodies without fear! I don't think I would want to be tied to another pill for life, gluten just isn't worth all that. BUT as with anything else that seems too good to be true there has to be a catch and a big one. There was no mention of what the side effects might be and they probably don't want to mention that if they even know.

I've been waiting for the celiac savvy to start talking about this study. Here's a TriumphDining.com article about it being BIG news for celiac tx and prevention:

(best are the comments - I always enjoy when smart people comment)

Very interesting Dot. I think what kicked mine in hard and heavy was menopause. Though I have had symtoms all my life, now that I know what to look for.

You are right Bee, never again will we be able to eat gluten, if you have Celiacs. For us it is not a matter of a little gluten or a lot. It is as if gluten, any amount, flips a switch and turns on the auto-immune response that makes our bodies attack our small intestine.

I agree B, people do not understand until they walk in your shoes. I guess the same could be true for a lot of diseases ... *sigh* I'm glad you're feeling better, though. That's the name of the game here!

Here's the other article I saw: bit.ly/h9j0mU
"Feb. 9, 2011 -- Blocking an inflammatory protein called interleukin-15 (IL-15) may help treat the symptoms of celiac disease and prevent the development of celiac disease in certain at-risk people, according to new research in mice published in Nature.

..."In the new study, researchers blocked IL-5 in mice genetically altered to have celiac disease and found that the disease symptoms were reversed, and the mice were once again able to eat gluten."

..."Medications that block IL-15 are being developed for other inflammatory diseases, including RA."

..."The new research also shows that retinoic acid, a vitamin-A derivative found in acne treatments such as Retin-A and Accutane, may be complicit in the onset of celiac disease.

“Vitamin A in these patients is a bad idea,” she says. “Patients at risk should be careful about using retinoids." This may even include topical retinoids if they can enter the bloodstream, she says.

Those two molecules act together to promote inflammation, she says. “The vitamin A derivative seems to fuel the IL-15, but if you block IL-15, retinoids are OK,” she says."

Thanks for info you posted in our group Dot. I just read testimonies of the people. Some were my stories. Like I had written them.
One thinks they are alone with the disease but after reading others similarities. I am not alone. Thank the Lord.

Good info Dot. Since G. free I am doing much better. I have not come to doing my own rice or that from scratch or baking cakes and desserts. I buy G. free out of the Store but so far I am learning what is for me and what I cannot tolerate even of G. free. I stay off it if it bothers me.

The GFree Pizza is not liking me second time around. So it is not for me.. . It is my second round of learning experiences. . Never will I listen to people when they say once your feeling better you can go back and eat Gluten. I was okay for one year after eating G I thought then out of knowwhere I got the attacks. Pains like I was in child birth. This is how I am back again.
Celiac is a Disease. It is there. The only thing Free Gluten does is control it. When You eat wrong things. It is like a relapse. . Then what I had was remission and then after full blown not remission. I have so many people say. Get better and then you will be able to eat Gluten food later. Until people have walked in your shoes. They will never know what Celiac is. I wish they would read up on it .

So thanks Dot.

bit.ly/h0kjF7 I've seen this a couple of times online now- that the retinoic acid in Accutane and other acne drugs have been a trigger of celiac disease. This is interesting, because I have a young friend who tried this drug in early 1990s and subsequently had IBS and fertility issues.

Do you know anyone who may be affected?
