There is a gf pizza near us. It is really good. A tad bit expensive but what gf products are not expensive.

Hubby and I are planning on going there soon for lunch as they have a salad and a slice of pizza. They give you a nice portion.

1grnthmb: Yeah I know. I just haven't had the money for extras like that. I'll be taking care of that this weekend. I may even tweak the vegan cupcake recipe I used to make and use all purpose gf flour emoticon

I live in San Antonio and there's only 1 place that has gf pizza crust and that's Bj's Brewhouse. I go to the shopping area that it's in quite a bit, so next time I'm out that way I do want to give it a try. I think there's one other place, but it's way out of my way and they don't deliver.

Junebug, You can make gluten free cupcakes and that will take care of your cravings. More and more pizza parlors are now offering gluten free pizzas. I had one for the first time about 6 months ago and I was really impressed.

Heck no! I'm not listening to no evil voice. Last time I went gf I would cheat and while I didn't suffer too bad I still felt off when I did. This time I've been a bit more careful and because of it I can feel the effects of being glutened more. Now I feel miserable when it happens. So, no gluten cupcakes. Not when I have a 100% gf restaurant within 10 miles of me that I can go eat at and who delivers their homemade breads, cakes, etc. Just no money or time to go out that way. Come fall though I'll be going to school within walking distance of them. emoticon

Junebug, there is an evil little voice that will tell you sometimes that you really CAN eat gluten and that cupcake will be fine!

DON'T LISTEN TO THAT EVIL LITTLE VOICE!!!

Summer of 2009 1/2 a cupcake did me in because I listened to that voice.

Few months ago, a small bite of a small oatmeal cookie did it. I don't listen to that evil little voice anymore emoticon

As for pizza, I have eaten the cheese and such off of it but it's not the same. Still the insane amount of calories but worse because you have no bread to bulk it up and I found I would eat more cheese off the top of pieces than if the bread was with it.

emoticon emoticon emoticon I know that there is cross contamination here. I did this once and don't plan on doing it again.

I heard that Chex was soon to be putting out a Chex mix that is gluten free! That will be awesome.
I have problems with my local Jersey Mikes. I would order a chef salad 9they don't have croutons at all, but then they would use the same knife to cut my strips of meat and cheese as they used to cut a sandwich in half. So i can't do that anylonger either. But i would still like the option. Maybe doing nothing more than ordering a bun or loaf to go and make my own sandwich later!

Only time I miss gluten is when I'm craving something like cupcakes or those chex mix bags of snacks that would be gf if they didn't put cheez-its and other stuff in them. Being gf is really helping with my "I want this I'm buying it regardless" frame of mind.

No offense taken.
I thought I missed Subway, but I really don't. I miss going out to have pizza though. Tried to just eat the toppings and not the crust, but that didn't work. Cross contamination didn't bother me, but I felt like I could have eaten 5 pizzas worth of toppings just to be full. Oh well. Pizza from Dominos, etc is one of the reasons I'm fat now. I can make a healthier, tastier, gf option at home.

I think this is great but I am also very wherry of it. The reason why is that I go to pick sandwiches up at Subway for my wife. I used to pick up a salad for me. Until I watched closely. As they slice the sandwich bread crumbs go every where. I saw them going into the meat and cheese and even some all the way down in the vegetable area. After seeing that I have not purchased anything else for myself there.

I miss Subway but I agree with the possibility of cross contamination. Unless they make the whole place gf there will always be some cross contamination.

Oh yes there are dumb adults too. I was just stating that most youngsters, unless they have dietary issues, might not understand the importance of cross contamination. Didn't mean to offend.

I'm not a teenager. Haven't been for a long time, but I've worked with teenagers and they were very smart and understood the papers and stuff that the managers gave us concerning new policies. If there were any questions the managers were always there to help. There are dumb adults as well. Probably more so than teenagers.

With most fast food places hiring teenagers, I can't see how cross contamination wouldn't be an issue.

That all sounds good; however I have to agree with the majority as with the gloves touching things they do have gluten on them. I am very sensitive as the slightest gluten I get extremely sick. I myself would be leary in trying it out. I love subways but would have to say to no this.

It sounded like the Subway actually has addressed the cross contam. issue. Which is really nice. I hope everyone near this place will try it out and tell us how it tastes. and I hope it is awesome so we can all have it.

Well. For one, I don't really eat fast food, BUT, if I were stuck in traffic for hours I would definitely choose Subway over McDonalds. Anyhow, My gluten intolerance is not celiac, and I am not quite as concerned with cross contamination. There is even a small amount of wheat grass (or is it barley grass) in my whole food vitamin. The manufacturer said that it is considered GF by FDA standards because the amount is so small. They do NOT advertise it as GF, I just happened to notice it on the label when I discovered I couldn't eat gluten and contacted them. However, this tiny amount has not seemed to be a problem so I'm sure the cross contamination problem would, for me, also not be a big problem.
But, if I had celiac I think I would be scared to eat anywhere except my own kitchen... and even then. emoticon

I understand now. I can see how that would be a problem cause the bread is already in the bins from previous non gf orders. Well, here's hoping that IF this is successful that they change how they do things.

I'm with Amber and hands going into all the containers. With Chipotle except for cheese and lettuce they use utensils so very limited chance of CC.
With Subway they put their hands in all the bins after touching the bread and crumbs going everywhere. I wouldn't feel safe unless they have a 2nd GF line and/or use utensils to get all the toppings.

My thoughts:

Changing gloves wouldn't change the fact that they touch bread and then dig around in the veggies.

Then even if they change gloves and grab a different bread they are grabbing into those same contaminated tubs, contaminating their current gloves and the new piece of bread.

I would think changing gloves would help. I could be wrong. I have gone places where I order gf and gotten sick. Those places I just don't go back to. The longer I stay away from gluten the more sensitive my stomach gets.

I'm mostly worried about the veggies. (I don't eat meat, but if I did I'd be concerned there too)

They cut into the bread and then hold them open and grab into all of the tubs contaminating all of those bins with gluten. I haven't seen how they are going to change this.

To some who are less sensitive it won't matter, but to me it does!

Did you read the thing? They said the bread would be wrapped including a one time use knife to cut it. I don't think it's pointless. Chipolte and Jason's Deli has a gluten free menu as well and all I ever have to do when I order from them is tell them to change their gloves and clean the workplace and they gladly do it. I've never had issues with being sick afterwards either. If enough people voice the concern to Subway about cross contamination then they might be more dilligent in doing so. All it requires is a staff meeting with all the employees or something to let them know the new rules. I'm looking forward to going back to subway. I miss some of their subs. Now to get Jason's Deli to make their French Onion and Broccoli Cheese soup gluten free. I've already emailed them, but I may do it again as the email I used got deleted.

Yeah I heard about this. Too bad contamination would be really hard for them to combat.

They'd need separate ovens, a separate workspace, and separate meats and veggies. I just don't see how they will have the room!

What I'm assuming is going to happen is that they are just making GF-bread, which is good and all, but pretty pointless since everything else is contaminated.

Hi. I haven't noticed if Subways here in Canada have GF subs yet but the Pizza Pizza chain offers GF pizza dough. They haven't quite figured out not to blend the dough as much as the regular one so it's tough and rubbery. I wonder how they can guarantee no cross-contamination in such an environment.
