I am also beginning to notice that I am having problems with items that say natural flavorings. I have been making a list of foods to stay away from and why I need to stay away. This helps me see the connetions between foods.
Bleedingrose- I understand your hesitation regarding Wiki. They are not my only source; college textbooks and other sites hold articles, papers, and valid identical data. Wiki seemed to have all the references attached at the bottom of the page should you have the time to follow a certain point of interest. My strict firewall and tight internet search parameters have not locked up on Wiki, it has on other web sites, sometimes to a full reboot of my computer, safer but not fun. and wiki can provide data that only credentialed professionals may login to acheive access to the same full articles.

yep, i avoid all of those. i've cut out everything that contains any additives. and i can't have sugar or yeast anyway, due to a yeast problem in my GI tract. i am also sensitive to soy, so the 'natural flavors' could come from soy also.

I don't believe everything I read either but if I read it and find that it may apply to me I look into it further and/or try it out. I have heard the same thing about MSG and other things in food that companies use to get you to eat more and be addicted. I think some of it may have been in the movies Food INC and Supersize Me, plus articles and discussions on here. Don't be so quick to dismiss things they may help you in the longrun.

Did you know that MSG's purpose is to create cravings so you eat more of the food that it is in? How insidious!

Oh yes Bleedingrose, I avoid these and I know why I must. I avoid thousands more for the simple reason of my body will respond negatively should I eat even a crumb. My food and health issues are compounded by a overstressed and half a century of aging manifested in a cascade of hormone decline, unrecoverable energy lose, immune weakness signs and finally diagnosis in adrenal fatigue.
Simple fatigue is not a respected insurance industry pay out condition. Everyone has to work; everyone gets 'tired'. This condition usually unseen by the average doctor and noticed when the organ is 95 % gone, and usually via the immune system poor response to corrective efforts; every adult of this working world, gets tired. It is when tired becomes a shortcut to life in lack of enough proper sleep patterns, the stimulants of caffeine, excitotoxins, and sugars are needed to run a life that the true chronic signs appear. When caught early enough, careful recharge is possible. See the book, Adrenal Fatigue, The 21st Century stress syndrome. This is why vacations are scheduled and sabbaticals are given in a career path. Miracles do happen!
Let us catch the young before our society sends them over the cliff, and before any over extension destroys their dreams and goals to be whole when the gravy train rolls into their lives. 1) Natural flavors may have correct 'note' of a flavor bouquet designed by man to help sell a processed food, but can contain hidden furaneol acetate (imitation alcohol from burnt crude oil), soy lecithin, and other non-food additives. These clog the digestive tract. We are not designed to eat crude oil. A corporate executive of a Natural Flavor company in an interview once said that crude oil is natural straight from the earth; I say, so is lead, mercury, and cadmium but I choose not to destroy health balance by eating them, any more. See a great resource for yeast in food and in vitamin facts...And... fungi pass the resistance barriers of the human or animal body (especially a weakened intestinal wall) and establish infection often hidden from the host and the doctor, even for years! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yeast and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mycosis
3) high fructose corn syrup, We do not remove mercury from our bodies well. It becomes a constant free-radical circulating and killing health body cells and whole body parts (cancer). It is used in some forms of processing to manufacture high fructose corn syrup. The body will build a tolerance condition (the insulin resistance) where cells will ignore some sugar by suck in too much in other tissues; when not corrected can ruin immune strength and even become hormone imbalance, obesity, or diabetes. See my blog because you are so right to mention it, Bleeding Rose. This simple sugar spends valuable nutrients to process (digest) empty calories, when these same nutrients should be spent removing toxins. See blog www.sparkpeople.com/mypage_public_journal_ individual.asp?blog_id=2032476
4) yeast extract (a thousand and one nicknames for mono-sodium-glutamate, excitotoxins extraordinaire, FDA politically approved, of course, of course). It is the major contributor to hidden, not properly tested conditions which complicated by fellow yeast life (different species but semi body accepting gut flora plus) not just candida. It acts in parasite invasion modes going from white round life to oval gray and lives in the wrong places of the body; and where yeast leaves 'the gut' in to the blood stream, it does this 'morph' causing multiple or erratic display of organ and tissue damage. In addition, yeast is a number one source of processing to achieve the classic multi-vitamins we take daily. These mentioned chemicals, derivatives, preservatives, and parasite life (the yeast) have all been exploited to the extreme known as body imbalance. This is one of the reasons I have had to convert to a special pharmaceutical grade vitamin program to avoid more yeast trouble and more bad results when a vitamin is supposed to support my health not tear it down. See blog ...
I have learned my lesson, maybe I can shortcut your search to keep you stronger for it. Food, medicine, and the relations to health both good and bad have been a hobby I have benefited from practicing. I know why I got weak and how to improve but I cannot return to the healthy balanced body and person I was before eating 'those things'. Here is my inventory of blogs should you wish to explore other topics of health and harm...

Corn Starch isn't necessarily bad but a lot of people with gluten issues have secondary corn allergies. Also there is way too much corn in the US food supply because it's cheap and too much of a good thing can be bad.

My baking soda has sodium bicarbonate as the only ingredient. (It absorbs odors from other things though if it is not sealed in an airtight container.) I have to be careful about baking powder however. Even if it is gluten free, it sometimes has corn starch in it to keep it from clumping. The Hain brand has potato starch instead.

I don't have any in the house or I would check....look to see if it has cornstarch in it. I know baking powder does and so does confectioner's sugar (unless you search out the one with tapioca starch).
I steer away from natural flavorings just being wary of what "natural" means.
I've cut HFCS out just because it's bad for everyone and after finding it things that I thought were safe that I don't care for the taste anymore.
Now does anybody have problems with baking soda? The last few recipes with it I've had the issue that it's all I taste. I don't know if I have some funky baking soda or being sensitive to it now. I was thinking a thread about it but it fits this thread so thought I'd throw it out there.

Niteteacher - somewhere in one of our threads, I posted a long time ago about wax on fruit having gluten in it. Then I read on the celiac listserv that it was nothing to worry about. That's interesting about corn oil; I hadn't heard that one. I just found this on the apple subject: ibstreatmentcenter.blogspot.com/2009/12/wh ats-in-wax-on-apples.html

I try to wash fruit with a hard cover in soap and water to get off anything spayed on. I use a fruit and veggie wash to spay on items with a thinner skin. I have reacted to frozen fruit though. That has been a mistery to me. It is my corn reaction so I believe they are using cornstarch to keep the fruit from sticking together during the freezing process. I don't get it on all frozen fruit though. I try to buy my frozen fruit from a health food store and the bag has to say organic. I make my own frozen french fries and cut up things like watermelon and catalope and freeze them for smoothies.
Ask at your grocery store if they use any oil to make their fruit shiny. I reacted to an apple once and found out it was shined with corn oil. I don't think they do that any more however. Lately they just say that they just use a cloth and shine them - no oil involved. It make me kind of leery though and I tend to only buy organic types of some foods.

I am allergic to corn in all forms....even if something is cooked in corn oil. I am still having trouble getting it out of my food. I have not seen this list before and will be checking out how to avoid many of the things on it. Thanks....
I avoid corn in any form (even in make-up) It causes me to have a sore throat, not tummy problems.

I tend to avoid natural flavors unless I am sure it is not from a "gluten" source. Kraft, I find, is awesome about labeling, so I am comfortable with their "natural flavors," but not necessarily any others.
I have been avoiding high fructose corn syrup for many years -- since well before my celiac diagnosis because there are just too many bad reports about it. Besides, I eat enough "natural" sweet stuff as it is. I just don't need engineered sweets!
I also avoid anything with yeast, as I am just not sure about this ingredient, so feel it best to avoid it.
Citric acid does not bother me, so I do eat foods with this ingredient.
Hope this is helpful. :)

I don't usually eat them, so I can't say that I've noticed.
As for yeast extract, I try to not go near it. It's often a hidden source of glutamate and yes, I am sensitive to glutamates (MSG and more) in my brain, not my stomach.
