Make sure to not take L-tryptophan AND 5-HTP at the same time, and to only take one 5-HTP dose at a time. Please talk to doc to discuss contraindications to your personal regimen, too. (Esp do not take if already taking Rx prescriptions for depression = "Serotonin Syndrome" - it can be life threatening:

This is a great article. It pointed out some benefits of VitD which I added to my mix when H1N1 was a big thing. I'll bet this helps.

I'm still baffled by the change in my mood and brain "fuzziness" and overall sluggish feeling by just eliminating gluten. AH-mazing!

I think you should go by symptoms, and talk to your health care person. Serotonin can be affected by stress, too. Gluten can be a stress to your body, but everyone's different on other stressors.

Here's an article which might be helpful (you tell me):

Well I think you should take the quiz on this thread and see if you may still be having issues. If not then don't worry about it...who wants to take supplements they may not need?

Before I went GF I took 5HTP and an Omega blend. I used to think I had IBS and had linked that to a disruption in seretonin levels, therefore chose this course of treatment.

I found they helped immeasurably but I slowly stopped taking them as I spent more time on GF. I found 90% of my depressive/sleep problems dissipated within a few short weeks on GF.

So, my question is this, do you think that the decreased seretonin in my gut was due to the gluten damage, or do you think that gluten overall has been causing a mood/sleep problem that I mistook for seretonin problems?

Do you think it's wise to have stopped taking the supplements when I feel so much better with diet?

Yeah I struck out again...I know my usual store HAD that stuff but now they don't. It was replaced by a whole line of womens supplements and Nordic Naturals Omega 3 stuff (which I am actually very happy about because I use those!) So I gotta find some somewhere in the area...I am sure my health food store has them...their supplement aisle is HUGE! I do have some sleep issues so that is good to know! Currently I wake up too early and can't go back to sleep...although I am still exhausted emoticon I will check out those sites if I plan on staying on them...want to just grab something around here to try it first.

I was taking my TravaCor, TheaNac, and added 2 L-tryptophan (500mg) for a month ... last week I added DH's 5-HTP (50mg)... whoa - MUCH deeper sleep :). It made DH too groggy. I did this w/out talking w/holistic doc, but will bring it up next appt.

FYI - Jarrow is a good brand. Try to not get many extraneous fillers.

Please do Dots, and Jen! I am going to look for some and try it too, unfortunately I went to the smallest and least stocked of our grocery stores today because it was on the way home from the inlaws. They had no tryptophan or 5-HTP. I am going to have to go to a better store for other things anyway, so I will keep you posted too.

WoW Jen, that's great that you don't feel cold anymore. Keep us posted on your doc visit. Maybe we can learn from it.

Cindy - I'll have to keep you posted on that middle-man.

Dots I don't have any experience with the 5-HTP it just seemed like cutting out the middle man to me! I was just curious...but maybe the tryptophan will be more recognizeable and help the body make what it needs.

Well my Dr is an ND so I think I'm good. He really listens to me and I think I'll email him that test and see what he thinks.

I know I had issues just from moving from southern Oregon to Northern Oregon dealing with SAD, I can't imagine moving to Alaska.

Funny about being cold, when I was eating gluten I was almost always cold. Now for the most part am just right, couldn't get warm during the deep freeze here in Nov/Dec last year.

Jen - I wish you luck on your next appointment. My experience with allopathic docs is that they treat with medications based on symptoms. There are many interconnections between all these transmitters, so I think that's one reason one drug may work for one person and not another. And drugs have side effects, weight gain being one I'm not too fond of. Shortly after I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism (which was really Hashimoto's, but a full panel of thyroid tests were not ordered/completed ... didn't do that for another 11 years! doh), I went wheat (which ended up gf, cause everything has wheat) and sugar-free and felt fabulous. Little did I know why. We moved to Alaska and I dropped the diet because of the stress of moving. I was crying all the time and a basket case**; I couldn't even complete a sentence at the doc's office: he wrote a script for Prozac. It made it so I could function and I did all the things you're supposed to do: "eat well and exercise" "volunteer" ("it'll make you happy to give to others" - it did no such thing - it made me exhausted! lol) yada yada. I missed laughing, and went off it three years later because we moved back to the Lower 48 and sunshine was normal. I shudder to think of living there ever again in those winters! Now the summers ... :).

Yes, serotonin regulates body temp ... my hands are freezing as I type this (we're having a cloudy, cool day). My MIL was celiac (not hypothyroid), and she, too was cold all the time. She did have depression.

Cindy, I didn't think I was depressed until I saw the results of my neuro urine test. Then I reflected more and had to admit ... twas the season (SAD).

Anyway, holistic doc said drugs captivate "existing" serotonin and bounce them around; it doesn't make "new." The amino acids help create "new" amino acids. One of the products I'm taking is TravaCor (has 5-HTP CindyTW*), another again is TheaNAC from the holistic doc (but available at some compounding pharmacies and online).

*Cindy, funny you should ask about that. I went to holistic-allopathic doc (best I have found so far) and I told him my TravaCor story (cerebellum headaches as side-effect but fibro pain GONE). I asked if I could take MORE L-tryptophan than in the TravaCor. He said I could take it til I got stomach sick, then back off a dose. The TravaCor pills are $60 for 120 and I'm up to taking 2, I started taking three, then wondered about OTC L-tryptophan. I think taking the precursor L-tryptophan to BUILD up the 5-HTP is route to go at this juncture. I'm on a new learning curve. What is your experience with 5-HTP?

**my body was telling me NO GLUTEN!

Very interesting...I think I need some tryptophan!! I was surprised by my high result! I am not really depressed, but there is a lot more to it than that I see! Can I ask why you don't take 5-HTP?

DotsLady, once again you amaze me.

I hadn't even thought about Serotonin but by that quiz I had a 48. With 49 or over being a problem I'm close.
The question that really got to me was the "Low tolerance for heat" I've been having issues with heat since my late teens when the temperatures jump. Today being an example - 2 days ago we had a frost advisory today was in the 70's. Luckily I felt it building and threw on the AC to lower my temperature before it got full blown. Still had a minor bathroom run but turned out to be OK. My Dr said that CD had affected my hypothalamus, which regulates body temps

I have a Dr appt this week, maybe I'll talk to him about it.

Hi Dotslady!
I also deal with seratonin deficiency issues, which of course can lead to some serious depression. Other than all the wonderful things you are already doing, I did/do two other things that really help me. The first was seeing a good therapist. Talk therapy is really helpful, even if you think everything in your life is good (I thought my life was fine and thought my "downs" were just random. She helped me see what the problems really were and helped me make a plan to deal was some of those issues.) Sometimes it takes more than one try to find a therapist who "fits" you. You might start with your GP. They often have suggestions and they know you, so that is always good.

The second thing that seems to really help me is a yoga class. I am not talking one of those crazy contortion types, but a relaxing, quiet yoga class that does help with my flexibility, but primarily focuses on centering your thoughts and bringing your mind and body into union. I am not necessarily pushing the spiritual aspect, but I find that the yoga philosophy really fits into most religious beliefs, with maybe a little tweaking.

Hope this helps. :)

Hi all. I've been waging a battle against serotonin deficiency of late. My life has to be rosy and 'in order' for me to not be depressed; when it's not, I'm prone to go down. Gut problems make a person prone to it. That's life I guess, but I'm also trying to figure ways around it and support myself. I know I'm not alone.

I'm taking supplements (L-tryptophan and other amino acids, etc), trying to change my circadian rhythm and get better sleep (L-tryptophan and other amino acids), getting sunshine by exercising the dog (and me), trying to not stress by having quiet time - you know, all the "right" things. It's a slow process, so I need ideas. Do you have more thoughts/ideas?
