I also was diagnosised with IBS and before I went GF I thought that it was the fresh fruit and veggies that were bothering me, but now that I have been GF for a month I am able to eat fruit and veggies with no problems.

I'm also glad that it is not just me. I was wondering if it should get better when I am off gluten longer but I am finding that it might not (not even if I eat organic greens).

WOW! This is just so new to me. I have never heard of sensitivities to lettuce like this. I've read articles in magazines but they all related back to the jetfuel problem. Sorry the article I chose was on old one. It was one of the first I saw to grab.

I think I could give up grains before lettuce. It must be terrible to suffer like this.

Darker greens seem to cause less problems but still can't tolerate large quantities. I usually eat my salads with protein such as chicken strips and hard boiled egg. Would that tend to make things better or worse? I will have to document one type of raw green food at a time.

I agree: many manufactured foods do not nourish us compared to garden foods. Good for you for doing a rotation diet for a whole year; that's amazing.

There are too many unknown variables. Unless you eat the food alone and in a pure form, you never know what you are really reacting to.
Lettuce crops have high levels of pestiside use. I'm not sure how much is eliminated by washing.
Dots, I got well and found my food sensitivities by following the rotation diet for a year. I also ate really well and lost a lot of weight. It was only when I added back manufactured foods that I started gaining weight. That's sure says something about our diets!

Thank you Barb. One of the links/articles described oral allergy syndrome. It's possible she is allergic to other things in the Composite family but doesn't react the same (as far as I know). That IS a great link :).

I look forward to hearing how your organic iceberg experiment turns out.

I found this excellent sit that lists cross reactions and food families.
Lettuce, including iceberg, is from the Composite family whereas broccoli is from the mustard family so these are unrelated reactions. www.calgaryallergy.ca/Articles/Engli
sh
/botanical.htm#hampong
.
One way of uncovering food sensitivites is the rotation diet where the food families are divided into 4 days and rotated so you are not exposed to the food family again until the 5th day.

For me, iceberg is unique within the comosite family. Next summer I'll try the local organic iceberg to see if I react to it.

ILLINITETEACHER - does it matter what else is with the salad; ie do you eat protein, what kind of dressing, and other toppings?

What kind of lettuce, or does it matter? Do you all respond the same to iceberg as Romaine, butter lettuce, etc? How about cabbage or broccoli?

Thanks you all. I have a friend who I'm wondering if she has gastroparesis as her stomach seizes when she eats fruit. She also cannot eat lettuce, has diverticulosis, and I swear high anxiety. She's no where near ready to hear about gf diet, but to build my thoughts I needed to hear it was possible to overcome the lettuce thing.

Use2Be - *it seems it's always something* . Funny you should bring up water. My neighbor and I just tested our well water. I caught a story on Dr. Oz's show about a family who's teeth were rotting because a nearby stream was contaminating their well source. (I couldn't help but wonder if they were celiac though :P). Their water WAS bad, however, I'm not mitigating that.

Barb, what IS it about lettuce/iceberg, then?

Hmmm, that is some article. I should note it is from 2002 but regardless, I find I can only eat organic lettuce and no iceberg/head lettuce. I get a major intestinal attack from iceberg. No loss since it has almost no food value.
ps. I think I'll stick to my home grown lettuce or that from our local markets! I can't imagin what that water is doing to all the people living along the river.

I don't know where you live or from where your lettuce is coming. I have read they have a problem with this in West TX. (I'm from Dallas area)

Here is info about lettuce becoming contaminated w/jet fuel. It is a much larger problem than we think.

www.ewg.org/reports/rocketlettuce

Perhaps this is related to your issues w/Lettuce.

Seems that I'm the oddball here. I never had any problems with veggies, had minor lactose intolerance but could barely handle pork. I could have a piece of bacon or small piece of ham but no more or deal with what I now know is CD symptoms.
I waitressed for a while and chef wanted me to try the pork chops one day and I had to say no and when I told her why, on her insistence. She said that I didn't make the enzymes needed to break pork down. Now that I'm GF I can eat pork again.

Just about any raw veggie, dairy and of course all wheat products gave me a real fit before I was diagnosed with Celiac almost a year ago. It took at least 3 months before I could handle dairy and I was cautious with raw veggies. Now I can handle most foods unless I get accidentally glutened.

Thankfully it does not as it is a HUGE staple for me since starting Spark People!

As it is so water based, maybe it can be cross contaminated via wheat fields?

Interesting you would ask. My primary doctor kept telling me I had IBS. All the stuff they had me do did not work. Then I went to a naturalistic doc who said NO you need to be GF (in so many words, lol) Anyway, once I got my tummy on the right track I didn't find lettuce bothered me like I thought it was doing. I was usually something else that I had with it, in it, or on it. So it doesn't bother me any more, I just really have to watch what I've eaten then and most likely the day before. When I haven't been "good" and my tummy is over reacting then lettuce isn't good. lol I believe it is just added fiber. Good luck!! ( I hope that all made since) emoticon

I have not been able to eat lettuce for 15 years. It gives me a very upset stomach. I was never diagnosed with anything though.

Is there anyone out there previously diagnosed with IBS with a trigger of lettuce which resolved on gf diet? If not lettuce, what other foods were your trigger and resolved with gf diet?
