It took me a year, but I finally got an antibody test for the Hep B - I don't produce antibodies (I was inocculated about 6 yrs before I was gold standard dx celiac), so my Hep B series didn't take.

After discussion with my functional doc, we decided I didn't need to get another series. I believe he doesn't like unnecessary vaccines as my getting Hep B is likely low. fwiw.

I'll update again when I get the bill to give you an idea of cost.

My hematologist is moving offices, I'll be going out of town in November, so I'll be rescheduling my Nov. appt - thanks for reminding me to ask about this. I'll try to follow up after.

Dot, did you ever follow up with this and get your antibodies tested?

One of the things I was surprised to find out is that my mom never gave us any childhood immunizations. She said it wasn't done routinely back in the day (I'm 55).

The Hep B shots I got, was before I was right after I'd been Dx'ed with thyroid disease but hadn't started meds yet. My hair fell out in handfuls on the second booster. The Hep AB combo shots I took were supposed to have been administered in a series of 3 shots.

I'd be interested in knowing what the cost of having an antibody titer run would be... the only one I know for humans is the Elisa and Western blot test and those were really pricey ( like $200 and over $400 respectively) last time I checked.

This is SO helpful, thank you! I was vaccinated six years before my diagnosis, so I'm going to talk to my doctor about this. I've never even heard of testing for antibodies after the shot. Seems a smart thing to do.

I know someone who got Hep B from helping a stranger after an accident - NOT fun. He wished he'd have carried rubber gloves in his car. What a hero.

Don't worry. You didn't change my mind about getting the shots. My mind was already made up. I don't really travel much. Perhaps if I did I would reconsider.

Oh dear, that wasn't the point of my post. You still need to get the vaccination, just warn your doctor of the article. I wouldn't want to get Hep B. It's just that you may need to get tested afterwards to make sure it is effective. If I'm travelling where this vaccination is recommended, I sure want to know I'm protected.

I hadn't heard that before but I haven't had the shots. I have scheduled myself to get them twice and both times have gotten sick before I got them so I am now taking that as a message that I shouldn't get the shots. I guess I'll take my changes (especially now that they might not even do any good.)

While reviewing my collection of resources, I came across this article on About.com. "Celiac disease is associated with a wide variety of health consequences. One such consequence is what doctors call “an inadequate response” to the hepatitis B virus vaccination. In other words, if you have celiac disease and were vaccinated against hepatitis B, the vaccine might not be effective."
I'd forgotten about it although it is an important article for me, in particular when I travel.
