Hi all!

I was away...but i just read all of your posts!

JJertman - I can relate about "substitutions"...I was just traveling and every time I do - it reminds me of all the things I can't eat! So that makes me want to eat the things that I can eat.

The thing that helped me lose weight was the Alternate day Diet. - But I even got to wear I wanted to rebel against that, too! but I am back on it because I gained on my trip. It also helps my lungs...

Variations on fasting (short term) seem to help people who otherwise can't lose weight

Here are some things that I've enjoyed reading about this year:
eat Stop Eat by Brad Pilon
Alternate day diet by Dr. James Johnson
Half day diet (web site)
3 Pm Secret (similar to half day diet)

I just share these ideas in case they help anyone...I am still trying to find the right "mix" of these ideas for me. Mainly I thin the best idea is to do any of these and then if I get sick of it - take a week off and then start again...

PS To my old SP friends - It's been a very rough journey... My beloved, healthy, athletic, tall, dark and handsome husband died in August 2012 from a very aggressive cancer... In the many months caring for him I was stressed and didn't "care" anymore, and put back on 30 pounds I had just finished losing... And then I gained even more...

I know! The prices are ridiculous. I decorate cakes and when someone asks me for a GF cake, I feel like I'm ripping them off but it costs me 5 times more than making a regular cake would. Thank goodness for amazon.com. I buy most of my gf stuff there. Bread mix, cake mix, pasta, and my most favorite thing of all time....the pancake mix. That stuff is heaven sent. I use it for everything, including the most delicious gf cookies ever. Not too healthy though, hence my problem.

I agree with Jjertmann, i feel deprived all day too, and then when the kids are either taken a nap, or in bed for the night, i end up eating something yummy that's GF but of course higher in calories to satisfy my craving for junk, where before i would eat something, like a hand full of pretzels, or have a piece of high fiber toast with jelly, or some more Kashi with fruit. most the GF foods replacements have such low fiber & protein, and more calories(plus with the breads i feel like you have starchy mouth(kinda like cotton mouth) anyways one of the only thing that saves me is that i exercise so much, just wish i could get master this GF eating thing, i still try a few new items each week hoping to find better choice, but am frequent disappointed with the taste, and of course the price of it all.

ONLY 4 times? You just seriously downplayed that! Kudos. I ONLY gave birth twice and I have a much bigger weight problem. I haven't figured out any tricks with losing weigt and being GF. I would love to hear some. I find that I think of myself as deprived and so I try to find replacements. GF does not mean low fat. If I can't have a donut, I can have ice cream, right? That's kind of an extreme, but you get the idea.

jessica, i've only given birth 4 times, (15,17,20&22) my 9& 10yr old girls were foster kids i adopted, and my 3yr old twins i'm also adopting from foster care, my other 4kids are foster kids, ages, 1,2,4 & 17. my biggest stuggles is avoiding the snacks the kids eat, and find time to walk 5 days a week, but i tell myself & my husband that i deserve that time to do something for myself(most the time i end up walking the border of the school, playground while the kids play on the playground equipment. that way i'm right there if they need me, but there so use to it, that they hardly ever do.
with having the IBS diagnoises for so many years, i was always a complex carb eater, and low fat mainly whole wheat whether it was bread, pancakes, brown rice, etc. also a big veggie eater. i've never been a big meat eater, turkey breast for lunch meat, or tuna. otherwise boneless skinless chicken or lean gr. turkey. so changing to GF has really give me a challenge to get enough fiber, and to lose these last few pounds. so if you find something that works for you please share . thanks

Wow Jessica, we are at the same weight, although my goal wt. is 117 lbs, i find that i definately struggle with weight loss now that i'm eating GF, i was actually at my wt goal for 2yrs, then put on a couple of pounds, then had to go on steroids, and put on 7lbs in 10days, and i've only lost a couple of those. i actually am very active, i teach 2 aeorbic classes, and 2 weight lifting classes each week, and walk at least 5 days a week, i'm always well over 10,000 steps a day. i think it takes a lot of trials and errors to find a GF way of eating that gives you enough protein and fiber(I was a big Kashi Go lean with berries for breakfast 6 days a week) still struggle with the breakfast thing, i can't stomach eggs more than a couple times a week, and need enough protein, and complex carbs to get through teaching classes for 2hrs, and caring for my 5 younger foster children (ages 1-4)i also have 7 older kids too, 6 of them that live at home and 1 out on his own. Jessica I totally agree about the losing weight thing being harder. If we try to substute in GF cereal for breakfast, and GF bread for a sandwhich at lunch, we've already ate more calories than i would have eating normal.

Hi Gluten Guys,
I learned to not stress to scale. I was always told that when I am good the scale may not show it; the measuring tape and the journaling will. With the fatigue, and inflammation, and pain to overcome the scale will be my indicator of good health after the poisons leave my system and a winning lifestyle is a daily joy. Going challenge diet then GF and low glycemic does boost my energy to help motivate me to get out and spend my calories like shopping dollars at the stores. I have turned a sharp corner and the 13 pound loss in the last 5 months is wonderful compared to the 50 pounds I put on last year while trying to get answers and become pain-free.

I personally don't follow a particular diet plan. I eat what I like so I don't have to worry about falling off the "plan". Portion control has been the key for me. The problem for me is being consistant with it. Sometimes I just can't resist that second helping...

I really hate that my club meets at a buffet for a "brunch" meeting once a month. I always go in with good intentions...

Hi Crotty

Thanks for your thoughts...my point was to offer support for any way a person was trying to manage weight loss.
Those foods are not required on the Leptin Diet - they can be helpful...but of course not the gluten and I don't eat soy...

There are a few books out there...and the ones by Byron Richards deal with the concept of timing of meals - and making sure you get some protein at breakfast. His don't contain any recipes...

So again - my point is to offer a thread for support in all things that help a celiac in the weight loss journey...but it may not be necessary. People may have found what works for them and made suitable substitutions, etc.

Hugs

Mary

I looked up the Leptin Diet and for the first day found out I could not eat:
Whole grain or high fiber cereal
Whey protein powder
soy
sprouted grain bread
no fish,
Avocado
Flax meal

Didn't leave to much to eat except fruits snd vegatables and a lot of them I can't digest.

Still love your idea.

Hi all,
I've realized that we need our own support group right here if you are trying to lose a few pounds while you are gluten free. As we can see on our other threads - celiac sometimes leads to thyroid problems, and other things that affect weight gain.

Also - so many weight loss cereals, and protein drinks or bars have gluten in them - so we need to support each other along the way and share our successes.

I am gradually refining my weight loss efforts...i am always learning - and sometimes I return to "tried and true."

Right now I realize I like the Leptin Diet - and throw in a few "3 day diets here and there...and then go back to the Leptin Diet in between.

Today - I am slightly above ticker: I'm at 161.8.

I hope to be able to wiggle that down to 160 or less by this time next week - using the above idea.

For any newbies - you can read the other thread on weight loss, and I'll keep this one updated, too.

This thread can also address the things like how we might compensate when we can't eat a great gluten meal - and this can lead to weight gain; and so how do we also address the emotional issues of being celiac, etc.

(For instance - once in a while I will still "compensate by eating a big portion of something GF when I had to pass up something "gluten" - but it goes beyond the hunger etc. It's more like - at least I can eat this an by golly - I'm going to eat a lot of it...)

Well - I don't really want to overeat anymore...

Okay you get the idea..anything goes. What works? What flopped for you?

What worked in the past and you'd like to bring it in again?

I'll be away for a few days this week - but I might get a chance to check in..

Mary
