Yes, you do have to listen to your own body. I would never say that something is right for everyone. I can't have peanut butter or dairy products so I definitely supplement calcium but try to get as much as possible from natural sources.

Sometimes food sensitivities don't allow one to get it from natural sources. I'm gluten intolerant and sensitive to all yeasts, molds, etc.
I tried brewers yeast once because a friend used it every day. I got really sick.

Brewers Yeast has Inositol in it naturally (as well as many other bemeficial nutrients). I put it in my morning smoothie. Some people like to put it on popcorn or in soup. I would prefer to get my nutrients naturally rather than in supplement form as much as possible.
Thanks for the great information.

Thanks for the Celiac Syndrome link. The website states:
"Dr. Rima Kittley coined the term Celiac Syndrome and started this web site, www.celiacsyndrome.com because she does not consider a genetic intolerance to gluten a disease. Celiacs are not sick if they stay off gluten. It runs in families, so those who have the problem are born with it. They got it from their parents and pass it to their children. "

Yeah!! Someone not calling it a disease!! I've said that for years. Calling it a disease also encourages one to think illness instead of wellness. And wellness is what we find when we go on a gluten free diet. Not that all find wellness because of health issues that might have a causal relationship to eating gluten.

emoticon I love coffee and potato chips. I remember when DH did Atkins diet years ago, that coffee/caffeine was a no-no. I also remember a newspiece by Tom Brokaw *years* ago about the burnt stuff on grilled items and creme brulee (that's why I remembered it: I love creme brulee) ... causes cancer and something to do with the eyes like blindness!, can't remember exactly- probably same reason: acrylamide? This was another reason I looked to eating more raw veggies and fruits.

I know nothing about inositol and PABA, a little about lecithin (lecithin was my first foray into learning about health when the doctor told me I was obese in my early 20s). I've heard of Adele in many places I've visited ... but not read her book. She sounds like a trailblazer.

Re: Rima Jensen's book: Obesity's Answer:

I'm going to try to get it through my lending library. Here's a little about the author:

Eveline: thank goodness you're giving up sodas - esp if they're caffeinated. :) I've also read different things about how they take phosphorus out of our bones ... not sure how accurate that is, but better safe, than sorry. Soda often displaces your calories for better or more nutrient-dense foods/liquids. Does lemon-water sound appetizing to you? Good luck! (And I'll try to give up caffeine ... it's spring anyway, and a easier to do when it's warm).

I'm with you Eveline. Adele is the best.

I like many of the Spark nutritionist articles but they need to take a very conservative attitude and cannot promote most supplements sold. Many of the claims are unfounded or out of context. I am appalled when I see 1/2 of a natural foods store composed of bottles of supplements that are supposed to cure anything and everything and they are so expensive.

Why are people ill? I think we need to look more at what and how we eat - all the processed foods, additives, etc.

By accident, I found this website today listing the top 20
"In July of 2006, the United States Food and Drug Administration released the results of its latest research on the acrylamide content of common foods.... Acrylamide tends to form when foods that are high in carbohydrates and/or an amino acid called asparagine are cooked at high temperatures. Cooking methods that tend to require high temperatures " chetday.com/acrylamidefoods.htm

The top 20 foods by average acrylamide intake by the U.S. population are as follows:

French Fries (made in restaurants)
French Fries (oven baked)
Potato Chips
Breakfast Cereals
Cookies
Brewed Coffee
Toast
Pies and Cakes
Crackers
Soft Bread
Chile con Carne
Corn Snacks
Popcorn
Pretzels
Pizza
Burrito/Tostada
Peanut Butter
Breaded Chicken
Bagels
Soup Mix

Check the full list - you will be shocked at some of the 'bealthy' food items on the list.

Very interesting - thank you.

I was diagnosed with insulin resistance a few years ago. After giving up gluten I found that I no longer need the medication for insulin resistance. I feel fine without it.

I am sorry, but I strongly disagree with SparkPeople in this regard. I am a strong believer in PABA (for the prevention of skin cancer) and Lecithin (the homogenizing agent that breaks cholesterol into tiny particles so it can pass thru cell walls instead of clogging arteries).

PABA unlike sunscreens does not prevent the skin from manufacturing it's own Vit D from sunlight.

I would recommend that everyone read Adelle Davis' book "Let's Get Well". Yes, this book was written years ago, but I choose to believe it instead of SparkPeople (in this case). It is up to everyone to decide what they want to believe. I know, just because you see it in print doesn't make it true.

You have to decide for yourself.
Best wishes
Eveline

Caffeine also stimulates insulin production which retards fat breakdown. Sugar metabolism is such a tricky balance...so many factors to consider!
Thanks for calling the book to our attention...sounds intriguing.

This is a quote from a Spark article:

Get Street-Wise About Supplements
Tips to Becoming Supplement Savvy
-- By Becky Hand, Licensed & Registered Dietitian

"Avoid supplements that contain unrecognized nutrients and substances. A number of substances like PABA, inositol, bee pollen, lecithin, have never been shown to be essential to humans. They do nothing but boost the price."

However, there were several websites were inositol in some form is being used to treat cancer and various other illnesses.

I had never heard of it but will have to consider further this information.

That is really interesting.
Many years ago I took multi vitamins that included inositol. None of my current ones include it. That was also when I went on a rotation diet to regain my health. I stopped drinking coffee and tea. I drank hot water, sometimes with lemon. I constantly lost weight although I ate a lot of food. I would cook my main meal in the morning with a carb, veg and protein in one dish and eat some for breakfast and some for lunch. I was never hungry. I finally went off the rotation diet as it was difficult and I didn't want to lose more weight. Near the same time I went back on coffee after having one cup after dinner out (a special occasion). That was it. I was hooked again.
Your post has convinced me to go off coffee again. I gave up soft drinks 2 years ago. I am active but cannot lose unless I am travelling. But then I do encounter hunger then as well. This is worth a try.
Barb
ps. I've used stevia for my coffee for about 10 years now. The last time I had a drink with an artifical sweetener, i had intestinal cramps and the runs.

This book has convinced me to try giving up my diet sodas (okay, not completely. I have to have just one to start the day. But I've been drinking 4-7 a day so this is a big change).

Quote from page 25 of the book:
Caffeine seems to cause Inositol depletion (Inositol is a one of the minor B-Vitamins). Inositol deficiency has something to do with the huge prevalence of obesity and diabetes in this country.

She continues. Caffeine is thought to increase pain and swelling in arthritis. It may contribute to neuropathy, nerve damage, in diabetics.

Quote from page 57. Whether it comes in a blue or a pink package, researchers say that artificial sweeteners raise blood sugar. If it raises blood sugar the body releases insulin. Then consuming it is not going to prevent weight gain.

She continues. For whatever reason, weight loss is difficult while continuing to use artificial sweeteners. Besides undermining weight loss these products have been reported to cause headaches, depression, other mood disorders, sleep disorders, memory problems, blindness, anxiety attacks, and menstrual changes.

For those of us who have a sweet tooth she recommends using a product called Stevia. It comes in little packets for easy use also. I found it at Drug Emporium off of Valley Mills Drive. I also found a green tea with Stevia in it. The green tea comes in little tubes that you empty into a bottle of water (8-16 oz is what it says on the package. I put it in 20 oz and it tasted great). Shake the bottle to dissolve the tea and drink. It is called Jackie Chan's InstaGreen Green Tea Beverage Mix. It has ZERO calories. The Lemon & Raspberry are wonderful. The original green tea is just okay.

I have been at this plateau of 158 for several weeks. We will see if giving up artificial sweeteners and caffeine will get my weight loss moving again.

Wish me luck. Or jump on the band wagon and see if it helps you too.

Eveline

P.S. She also recommends taking 500 mg of Inositol and 500 mg of Taurine (an amino acid) three times a day. I got those at Drug Emporium also and I am using them too.
