No worries - go ahead and get the GF version and I posted in this topic on Mar 28 that it has recieved GF certification.

This was posted by Clan Thompson on the ICORS listserve:
" Rice Chex cereal is listed as being gluten free. Please note that only the new REFORMULATED boxes of Rice Chex are gluten free. These boxes will be marked Gluten Free on the front of the box. General Mills says they are also being made in a dedicated facility so there's no cross contamination either. However, there are still old boxes on the shelf that contain barley malt and are not gluten free. Make sure you check the box for the Gluten Free labeling."

While I am so happy about this news, I've been wondering, isn't there a pretty big risk of cross contamination? I love chex, and so did my kids so I'd love to give it to them again! I was just wondering...

FYI-I went to Ralph's (in Anaheim, CA) on Monday to see if they had the gluten free Rice Chex, and they did! (One of my favorite cereals, I was really excited when my daughter called me from Louisiana and told me about the gluten-free change.). There were still the old kind on the shelf as well, but the gluten free was clearly identified. I sent General Mills customer relations department a thank you note. Gotta run, I'm late getting out to work...haven't been on this site for a while...came on to see if everybody knew about the Rice Chex. emoticon

emoticon emoticon on the "R" Nomad. Thanks. My kid loves to make some type of "gorp" recipe with this cereal ... I'm encouraging her, and she's trying to be gf .. occasionally anyway (I'll take what I can get). So, I'm glad it's gf again. Baby steps!

You can always add fruit or flax for fiber!! I wonder how long it's going to take before it's at the groceries nationwide.

That is great! Not the best cereal choice since it doesn't have much fiber but it will be nice when we are on vacation to be able to find a cereal I can eat without hunting all over town.

It has it on the General Mills website except the R is in a circle, ie Registered trademark. Most simple text editors do not accept special characters.

Btw, I checked my local grocery stores and this is not available in Canada.

It's official, not only a lack of gluten in the ingredients but certified - here's the announcement from Celiac Disease Foundation:

"CDF is pleased to announce that General Mills Rice ChexR is now a Proud Sponsor of the Celiac Disease Foundation. This great tasting cereal has been reformulated and is now GLUTEN-FREE! Look for the new Rice ChexR with the red gluten-free check mark on the front of the box. Thank you to General Mills Rice ChexR whose partnership with CDF will bring a greater awareness of Celiac Disease to the mainstream marketplace.

Three cheers for Rice Chex and Crunchy Corn Bran! Do you think this is a sign of permanent change? Wouldn't that be exciting, if we had more than 2 choices of cereal! I hope Honey Nut Cheerios are next... Now I'm drooling just thinking about it!

Donna, another good news story but the problem with the cereal you mention is Corn! So many of us have to avoid it.
There are many more option for corn products than the rice products in cereals. I just had to give up Mesa Sunrise cereal because of the corn.

I don't know if you have tried the new Quaker Crunchy Corn Bran, but I called and although there may be cross contamination it seems to be GF. I called and as yet they can't make that claim but hope to soon. They are waiting to hear back on some federal regulation.

This is great news. And a signal as to how glluten free foods are coming to the attention of the major manufacturers!
What a relief for travelling especially when it may be hard to find a natural foods store. Right now the gluten free Health Valley Rice Crunchem's is not available in Canada.
If both are available I would still check the ingredients list and pick the healthier version.

That's great. I love a bowl of cereal with soy milk for a snack and right now there is only one kind of cereal that I can eat.

luten-free-rice-chex-coming-soon-to-R>a-store-near-you.htm

Quote:

"Gluten-Free Rice Chex? Coming Soon To A Store Near You!

Here's a shocker: Rice Chex is going to be gluten-free! General Mills has changed the recipe, and instead of barley malt (the offending ingredient in the past), Rice Chex will be flavored with molasses.
On the front of the new cartons, the "Gluten Free" label appears just below and to the left of the big red "Chex." Be very careful, because store shelves are still full of the old product. It may take several months for the new gluten-free Rice Chex to reach your neighborhood."

This article addresses the US. You'll have to call re: other markets; if you find something out, let us know.
