Keep in mind that a very important component of losing weight is exercising. To have the energy required to exercise, 1200 calories per day is the bare minimum. Going under 1200 causes the body to switch into starvation mode, slowing your metabolism and causing you to plateau.

1200 is the minimum for EVERYONE. No one should ever go lower then that, especially if you exercise regularly. Your body needs nutrients to survive. It also needs nutrients to keep your metabolism going. If you eat less, your BMR (basal metabolic rate) readjusts to a lower number, meaning your burning less calories then ever before. You must eat to loose weight and to be healthy. If you eat less...your body will actually go into "starvation mode" and start holding onto the fat. You don't want that to happen. Eat up. :)

You are probably right about the calorie count for teenage girls. I didn't think about that! I follow the "Eat- Clean" diet by Tosca Reno. It really just promotes eating foods in their natural state and leaving off processed foods and sugars.I had great success with the choosing of clean foods in 2006. But when I started adding back the drive thrus and holiday foods for christmas and all the way up to Valentines I gained 25 lbs. and felt terrible. So I am back on my plan and feeling better already. And the pounds are coming back off. cindi

Yeah, I would be curious what they'd recommend for girls? It might be more though, since when you're younger you tend to have a high metabolism. Still, it'd be interesting to know. emoticon
Also, what's clean-eating? I'm interested in finding out about different strategies to help boost my progress.

I have always wondered that too?You think maybe we should use a girls chart for heighth and weight and see what calories they recommend for girls?Because there are times if I stay within 1200 and my activities has to slow I can't lose anything.I really stick to a clean eating diet.So sometimes it does get frustrating. emoticon

Thanx. I kinda thought it seemed pretty low, but I wasn't sure, so I'm really thankful for your input, guys. It's so hard to be certain how things apply when height isn't on your side. emoticon I'll just increase my exercise every couple of pounds or so to keep the weight loss going. Cool beans. emoticon God bless! emoticon

Other articles also go further to state that 1200 is the absolute minimum a woman should consume so she doesn't go into starvation mode. Basically, the best way to get your calorie deficit when you are short is through exercise, not by cutting calories to less than 1200. My advice is if you want to do that you need to speak with your doctor or nutritionist. I'm 5'1" but I still feel some of your pain! For me to lose 2 pounds a week I need to burn almost 600 calories a day! Still, it works and I'm feeling and doing great.

You didn't mention your activity level, but I would think 850 would be too low.

Hi,
I was wondering if I actually require the 1200 calorie minimum to still be healthy and lose weight? There's an article I read on here "Calorie Calculation" that gives the calculations to figure out how many calories you need to lose weight and all that. I was curious because I'm only 4'9". So, I followed the calculations, what I came up with is: if I want to lose 1.5 lbs/wk--1100 cal/day, and if I want to lose 2 lbs/wk--- only 850 cal/day. emoticon Now, I don't wanna go too low and shut down my metabolism, but I also dont want to be consuming too many calories. So, now I'm not sure what I should do. Any advice? Thanx much. emoticon
