I haven't noticed those ads on SP, but I have heard of the Alli pill and I think it is disgusting.

OILY LOOSE STOOLS, FLATULENCE, FECAL INCONTINENCE (AKA TAKING A DUMP IN YOUR PANTS!)

Why anyone would want to take in a substance that causes such things is beyond me. And what is laughable is the pharmaceutical company recommends that you follow a low-fat reduced calorie diet to prevent these side-effects.

WHY WOULD YOU NEED A FAT-BLOCKING WEIGHT-LOSS PILL ON A LOW-FAT, REDUCED CALORIE DIET!!!

It's amazing the crap that they market to us. Don't be fooled, it's just crap. And I don't care if it's FDA approved. The FDA has approved many things that have ended up killing people. Exercise and healthy eating is the only way to go.

Whether you think you can or can't, you're right.

The amusing thing about all those ads is they all say in teeny-tiny print all the way at the bottom "Results Not Typical". Surprise, surprise.

I agree with you TYCOLES, they all say you have to eat right and exercise for it to work...which it what you should be doing anyway.

Ever notice how diet pills are always like, "Eat sensibly, exercise, and take this pill, and you'll lose the weight"? Well if I am going to eat sensibly, and exericise, won't I lose weight anyway? What do I need the pill for?

I don't really like the idea of taking diet pills because I always feel they force the body to do something it isn't supposed to do. If my body is supposed to absorb fat, why would I take something that prevents it from doing that? I'd rather just do right by my body, eat right and exercise, and trust my body to do what it is supposed to do, which is shed the excess pounds. Also, while my goal is to lose weight, the greater goal is to be healthy. That can only be acheived through proper food choices, and exercise.

Finally, I don't really mind the ads either. I figure SP has to make money to support the site, and I am willing to put up with ads so long as SP remains free. I am on WW and I pay to use that site, and SP is way more user friendly than WW online. AND WW has ads. Not for diet pills though.

The other ads are ok, but with the Alli ad I was like sparkpeople and Alli...not good. Its the ads that keep sparkpeople free, so it is good to pay attention to it.

I love sparkpeople. Its such a useful site.

Looks like your doing pretty good 10, 11 lbs is good. Water does work, i just got off the path, its hard to think to drink water, i saw a water bottle advertised today in one of magazines that tracks every drink that enters you from that same water bottle, that would be interesting, i may check that out. Wish me luck , i need it,omccoy

The lure of the magic pill is just so strong though isn't it? We all wish there was a wave-a-wand way to get thin. It seems thought that either they don't work or/and they are dangerous, or they might work but are definitely dodgy, because it doesn't do to mess with your body's metabolism like that.
The nearest thing to magic potion I have found it water. Making a point of drinking the 8 cups and going for water when I feel like going for broke is really helping. Also magic mouse and keys, if I track, I stay so much more on programme than if I don't. It's like my fairy godmother is looking over my shoulder and I don't want to let the side down.
That said I very foolishly spent about 6 times the normal price for tea for a box of pu-era-ah (I think) tea. It's nice tea but it doesn't do anything special, except maybe replace a more harmful snack. MY SIL says you can get it cheap in a Chinese grocers/ but forget about the diet claims, it is just a fairly strong tasting black tea

Omccoy, one thing that's really helped me is eating smaller meals through out the day, helps keep blood sugar and energy levels up. Maybe this would help you since you said you run out of energy. I eat small meals every 2-3 hours. This also boosts your metabolism which helps burn fat! Weight loss is slow-going sometimes, but you can do it, you've already lost 6 lbs, that's awesome!

There are many pills and medications that have been FDA approved and turned out to be dangerous in the long run. Just because it is FDA approved does not make it safe. And just because someone else took it without side effects, does not mean it can't kill you! A new pill has not been out long enough to know what the long term side effects are. My husband was on a medication for pain, that was FDA approved and readily available. He was on it for almost a year. Two years later he was on the verge of a stroke at the age of 43, due to this drug. Many people died from it, even more did stroke from it. We just happened to catch it in time, being we both have an education in the medical field.
Point is, FDA approved does not make it SAFE!
Proven studies show that eating properly and exercising more works, and for all ages! As we get older it is more difficult to lose weight, but it is still possible. 20 lbs to lose, in my opinion, is not significant enough to risk your life over, just to lose some weight. 20 lbs overwieght is only a sign that you are not eating properly or moving enough. (Just my educated opinion)

Irish, i agree with you, most of them are just money down the drain, and a lot of times, your health is affected. some of them are really bad for you. Most of the time i would try them maybe for a week and quit, cause i never saw a difference, i tried the fastin, and the zentical, i lost but i gained it back, it all depends in the ingredients on this alli pill, if all its doing is blocking the fat, i may try it for a short time to get a push, but eating right and exercise is the key, moving more than i'm eating is my problem, i run out of energy early in the day. And you feel better with exercise. Once i get into the routine of exercising, you rely on it to make you feel better and look better. I just can't seem to get to a routine and stick to it, but i'm still trying. omccoy

Omccoy, I just think any diet pill is a BAD idea. We all wish there was a magic pill to make us shed pounds, but in reality there's only one healthy way to lose weight, eating less and moving more. Everything I've ever read has said diet pills are dangerous. Here's a spark article about diet supplements:
http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_articles.asp?id=510

And wasn't ephedra FDA approved...?

Hi everyone, i was actually thinking about trying this new diet pill, its fda approved, in fact its the only one that fda approved, but its really about the same thing as zenical, it blocks the fat absorption. When you get 50 its really hard to lose, and i thought this might help me until i lose about 20 lbs, and get this weight off, i 'm only 5 ft, and weight 155 lbs, need to lose at least 20, but ive got swimming to take up soon , as it gets warmer. omccoyemoticon

I actually hadn't noticed them. I don't pay attention to most ads on websites these days. But if they're running diet pill ads then it does seem to go against what the website stands for...in fact one of my daily e-mails this morning was just about how bad diet pills are for you. On the other hand sponsorship and ads are what makes the site free.

Eve, just ignore them if your not interested. I,m sure they only run them to make money to support the site. Have a good day.

Is it just me or does anyone else find the Alli ads annoying. I mean were on Sparkpeople to learn how to be healthier without quick fixes/yo-yo diets, but then we are bombarded with ads for weight loss pills. emoticonemoticon
