It sure does make me feel taller! When I'm at my goal weight I feel 6 ft tall!!! I think us small women look 2ce as short when we're even just 10 lbs overweight because our torsos are so small. UGH

OH my gosh, wouldn't that be amazing!!! I do agree that the improved posture, especially if you weight train back & abs, will make a huge difference, but it won't make me 5'9"!!

I agree with the posture theory. Plus, I think you appear to be taller, because you are leaner.

I think it's because we are more toned and we have a better posture. No slouching anymore.

The best has yet to come.

Actually losing weight didn't affect my "standing height" but it affected my "seated height". The fat on my a$$ doesn't raise me up quite so high anymore emoticon . I must have lost at least a half inch off my "seated height".

I agree. If you lose weight your posture improves and you are elongating the spine. If you do pilates you stretch the spine and you could actually gain a little. So if it helps try it out.

Well, one could only wish...I want to be 6 ft some day to be able to almost look my hubby eye to eye. At 4'11, its a long way baby. You may feel or actually be taller due to posture? Especially if the weight is in the front such as your chest or your stomach, I lose weight in the breasts first, which is not flattering but a heavy chest affects your posture.

I don't think you actually get shorter but perhaps because you are losing weight. You are closer to the shelves and you can probably reach higher than before?

I don't know about weight loss but my mother says that she measures a half inch taller since she started pilates. :-)

it's all an illusion
since you lose weight you appear narrower and look longer and thinned out therefore giving you the appearance of being taller.

It's one of my favorite parts of being at a lower weight. when i gain i just feel like a short fat blob and then when it goes back down all of a sudden i feel stretche dout and lanky..

although i'm clearly not being only 5'3...

Hmmm. It's a mystery to me. I thought the only way you could shrink is if you lose bone mass. I don't really see losing bone mass just from losing weight, unless your weight loss is unhealthy.

I've heard you only lose height if you don't eat enough/properly. I didn't lose any height when I lost weight before (I've been up and down 20-40lbs for the past seven years...).

Short Term Goals

-Eat more fruits and veggies
-Work more activity into my days

-130 October (close enough!)
-120 December
-110 February 08
-100 April 08
-95 April 27, 08 my 25th!

I'm 4'10 and small framed by the way.

Currently
130-131 lbs
getting in a lot more activity
working on overcoming depression
looking for work and Irish step dancing classes

I feel the same. When I was about 100-115lbs people didn't make so many short comments. I'm around 4'11 myself.

I think the yoga and pilates I've been doing to lose weight and tone help me stand straighter, which makes me appear taller.

I am only 5 feet tall. When I was thinner people didn't really consider me to be short. I think I appeared taller because I was properly proportioned. Now that I am overweight, I hear comments about my height all the time - I definitely feel short and fat at this weight.

I actaully like the idea of getting smaller. I would love for my future husband/first boyfriend to be able to pick me up and hold me and evelop me like that.

I think it makes perfect sense that we look smaller. I've always felt that my weight was intrusive of people, so removing it would mean I'm less "in your face" so I look smaller...if that makes sense.

Wow, I hope the getting shorter thing is not true!! lol I don't think we can afford to lose any more inches height wise!

I never feel taller when I'm smaller in weight. Nor do I feel shorter. Truthfully, I just feel pretty darn short all the time!

I agree. I've only lost 13 lbs so far, but I carry myself completely different. I feel better about myself, so my head is up and my shoulders are back. I feel like I can accomplish any goal, now that I've lost just a little bit. Plus, there isn't as much weight to weigh you down from reach, would be my guess.

That is funny, I feel that I am taller. But I think its due to the fact that I hold myself different when I am thinner. I feel much more confident so I stand straighter...

I don't think you *actually* get taller but I do think you can stretch farther. I've noticed the same phenomenon. :)

Just an observation I had as I was decorating the Christmas tree, and reaching stuff down from high shelves this year . . . (Yes I've gotten a late start) I can reach those higher branches and shelves a lot easier this year. I know I haven't gotten physically taller, but being a little less wider than I was a year ago, I can get that much closer to said shelve or branch. I'd never thought of weight loss being able to make it easier for me to reach things . . . Just one more reason to loose those pounds (and inches) from around my middle. emoticon

Think of your body as an orchestra. All of its systems, organs, muscles, cells, fluids, hormones, and chemicals play different instruments, . . . They work independently, but only when they're played together can you appreciate the magnificent symphony of your own biology. (You on a Diet)

I'm becoming the conductor of my own symphony!
